9/10
A classic 16-bit platformer in modern clothing. This game has it all: a great soundtrack (bops), great level design, great character design, great visuals, a cheesy but fun story and to top it off additional campaigns which are particularly fun. Spectre of Torment has a particularly tragic but amazing story that surpasses the base game. Overall the presentation of this game is second to none, and a true nostalgic platformer that I would recommend to new and old players.

Played through on Vita.
A classic 16-bit title. If it came out in the 90s it would’ve gone down in history as one of the best games ever.
DLC hits it out of the park by essentially giving you 3 more full games. I particularly loved the gloominess of Specter Knight’s story and his fluid gameplay. And collecting cards in King Knight’s simple but effective card game.

I'd beaten Shovel of Hope and played through most of Plague of Shadows on 3DS back in the mid-2010s and thought it was really good!
Then I replayed Hope and beat Shadows and thought it was really great!
And then I beat Specter of Torment and King of Cards and that's when I learned to really love Shovel Knight.
Individually, these were already some of the best platformers of all time; together in one package, it's no contest.
Also, playing through King of Cards gave me the same dread I'd felt playing through the penultimate chapter of Live A Live - if you know, you know.

Initially played the 3DS release of Shovel Knight, back when it was just Shovel of Hope, and started Plague of Shadows but did not complete it. Later, when Treasure Trove released, I bought the Switch version and eventually earned 100% completion on each of the four campaigns, minus any Joustus-related content in King of Cards. I did not go for any achievements, and I will not be clearing the remaining challenges, but I might replay the four main games down the road.
I'm unbelievably mixed on Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. As a collection for the entire main Shovel Knight series, it's impeccable. The series itself on the other hand, well, I struggle with. Aesthetically, I love it, its world, and the writing. Gameplay wise however Shovel Knight takes too many inspirations from the retro platformers it shares an identity with and winds becoming frustrating, but never difficult. So many deaths and the broken game flow of this series, especially in the second game, Plague of Shadows, comes down to poor level layout and really shoddy platforming physics that torment the first two games. However, the second half of the series is near impeccable with levels that are of perfect length and pretty creative yet still deliciously retro forms of platforming movement. Specter of Torment especially stands out as a 4/5 gem in comparison to a 2/5 slog like Plague of Shadows.
This is one of my favorite games of all time, I can't belive that a game considered good is actually good wow.
It's everything I seek from megaman and more. Which after playing this game megaman is going to drop in my ranking. But why is that?
The gamplay flows reeeaaaally well, like, all the mechanics are so satifying. The only one that felt a bit stiff was the ghost one but even then, it was still good.
The bosses and locations are so iconic for me now that I played 4 different campaigns in this world. They all have so much charm and the characters are enjoyable.
In all the games you can buy items which make the game so fun and varied, you can experiment with different mechanics. Don't get me even started on king of cards moment to moment gamplay. It's so "Insert a positive adjective I haven't said yet here", but it fell from the card aspect a bit. The alchemist one is interesting and I personally enjoyed it a lot but I can see why people don't like it as much.
These extra campaigns are so good that make shovel of hope look ok even though alone is incredible.
I haven't played the showdown mode or done the extra game plus playthroughs but I can say with confidence, this is one of my favorite games of , wait, I alredy said that. Eeemmm

A really good old school video games, but damn it is hard. Not unfair hard, but hard. In fact, I noticed that they decided to put the artefact command on Up + Attack Button... like in the old Castlevania on NES.
Though, it was because NES controller didn't have enough buttons at this time... now controllers have more than enough buttons... I think almost half of my death were because the gloves or the dagger didn't activate correctly because the joystick of my Xbox controller considers a diagonal is, first, right or left instead of up or down.
I think that they should have done the same thing that in Super Castlevania 4.
