im kind of a sucker for games with odd concepts, and while strange telephone doesn't really work all that well as a typical game, as a dream exploration game it absolutely scratches the same itch that yume nikki and lsd dream emulator do for me. i just like wandering around here and seeing all the weird stuff going on, its NEAT
Man I wanted to like this game a lot but it just wasn't hitting the spot. The music is great, UI and visuals look excellent, but the mechanics are incredibly annoying. The time limit and constant rummaging through the same areas left me feeling bored pretty quickly, and you're dealing with a lot of the same areas. Yume Nikki repeated a lot of stuff, yes, but you could also move through these areas way faster and were given the time to interact with things and investigate. This game was sitting in my library for a while so I don't feel too disappointed but it definitely looked way more interesting than it actually was.
A very interesting and atmospheric game brought down by an ill-fitting time limit, and extremely hands-off, obtuse puzzle solving. I'm aware that games such as Yume Nikki thrive on that sort of obtuse design and odd imagery to drive exploration, but the "glitch" time limit per call somewhat squanders that. If you stay in the weird phone world for too long, you'll get a game over. If I had to wager a guess, it's like this so you'll back out and try a different number for a new starting point. However, I feel like you could remove the time limit with no consequence. Having rooms beginning to repeat is a good enough reason for a player to hang up the phone and punch in a new number for a different starting point. Some puzzles were actually really charming, but for 75% of them, I was trying everything on everything in a desperate attempt to get a reaction. Game's got some unique visuals, imagery, and music though, I'll give it that. I definitely vibe with this one's aesthetic.
it's a very short puzzle-solving adventure game, not a yume nikki-like as people seem to assume picking it up going by steam reviews etc. a lot of the puzzle solutions don't really make sense which i guess is to be expected, but maybe i am just bad. i liked it anyhow, it's aesthetically and visually appealing enough to be enjoyable.
