Imo both this and Phantom Hourglass are very underrated. They both have their shortcomings, but they both offer a complete zelda experience without sacrificing anything substantial.
I think the biggest flaw in Spirit Tracks is the train traversal. Although it's incredibly cute it's definitely much more linear than a typical zelda overworld. The dungeons are a step up from PH though and the ost is one of series best.

this has to be my favorite (and honestly most underrated) title in the LoZ franchise. ive played it way too many times to properly log, but its always fun every time. zeldas characterization is one of the best in the series, and the soundtrack is stunning (especially the final duet, iykyk). i wish people werent so turned off by the touch controls so more people could experience it
As the second DS Zelda Entry, this game parts itself very differently from Hourglass. Having to unique mechanics to the series, Zelda assisting you in combat and puzzles for a majority of the game, as well as the train mechanic for travel. Both are done well and are a breath of fresh air, however the train travelling does get repetitive and the story and combat are lack luster.
General opinion seems to be that this game is more liked than Phantom Hourglass, and I can see why with Zelda being an actual companion and not just a damsel in distress, but I cannot agree. Well not about the Zelda thing thats cool, that the game is better. The movement is more restricted being train tracks instead of an open ocean, but the thing I really did not like is that the main dungeon you keep going back to lets you straight up skip sections you have already done. While this sounds like a positive I prefered Phantom Hourglass' Ocean Temple because every new item you got let you take major shortcuts and get previously unattainable chests in the dungeon and it led to some powerful carathesis and one of the best examples in the series of how every item added to your roster makes you a stronger Link.
I got almost emotional at the end game. God, this game is sooooooooo much better than the previous DS one with a better story (even if I didn't go crazy for the lore direction since it takes place in the Wind Waker timeline, but whatever, we get that the gameplay in Zelda matters way more).
The most ingenious ways to use DS functionality (ok beside that map thingy on Phantom Hourglass that was cool) is definitely in this game and loved everything about it.
No more hub-dungeon backtracking, great dungeons, awesome and coolest Zelda-Link relationship for the first time in the series (there is no game that puts them as closer as this one, and I'm still waiting for another like this).
My only gripe is how much tedious travelling with the train it can get after a while, definitely worse and way more restrictive than Wind Waker's ship travels.

Strong character work continues from Phantom Hourglass. Happy to say dungeons are much improved upon. It's a shame getting to them requires the most tedious form of travel yet. The train is too slow and far less engaging than traveling by foot in other entries. I would hold this game in higher regard if it weren't for that tedium. I can't imagine myself replaying this game for the dungeons and bosses because I'd have to go through so much boring filler to get to them. Also the flute sucks.
Triforce Train go brrrr
In all seriousness, it's not nearly as bad as people say it is, for a DS Zelda game the story, gameplay, dungeons, and puzzles are actually pretty in line with what you'd experience in a full 3D Zelda game. The touch controls get really gimmicky at times and definitely doesn't make the game better, but I don't think they're as bad or as annoying as Skyward Sword's gimmick for controlling the game.
The train as your mode of transportation I can understand being lame to some people, literally being railroaded onto the story, but in my opinion it's nothing too offensive. The escort missions are annoying, but they do fun things with it here and there, makes it boring with a bit of interesting instead of just bad.
If you can get past the touch controls then I do recommend this game to Zelda fans, I genuinely find it fun even if it's not an impressive game by any means.

Trains are great. Zelda and Link are really cute in this one. Though it still has the same issues as Phantom Hourglass, the story and gameplay was much more compelling, or at least memorable, than PH. Chugging along the tracks, with a banger theme, from point to point and unlocking mysteries at each waypoint was fun. The whole ending section in the Dark Realm felt very high stakes with the demon trains chasing you, and being able to control Zelda through her spirit armor is the some of the closest we'll get to having Zelda be a playable character.
But seriously, bring back train conductor Link, what a fun outfit.

this iteration of zelda is one of my favorite zeldas (both in terms of her design as ghost zelda and also personality) and it really sucks that people just looked at this game at release and were like "lolwut train demon". please give it a chance if you're still hung up on the premise for whatever reason
