Finished on Master Soul.
Unsouled is a game that I think needed a bit more polish, but still delivers on a satisfying combat experience with a plethora of mechanics to dig your claws into. Theres a lot of minor and major nuance to every attack and move in your arsenal, which is massive. I would have liked to see more harder elite enemies and combinations of those, because many combat encounters can feel quite musou-esque with the amount of violence you dish out on waves of small enemies. The bosses are good and fun almost unanimously, though.
If you're someone who enjoys a difficult combat-focused game you'll probably enjoy this. The camera can be a bit too antagonistic, mind, and the see-through vision through walls doesn'tdo enough. Also I do wish there was a bit... more? Bosses weren't easy, but there was nothing that TRULY felt like it was pushing the system to its peak. Kamas was close, though.
Either way, fun game! Hope theres some dlc for it of some kind.

The combat and mechanics are trying to do something really interesting and they do have depth. I played through the game on the easiest difficulty so I was able to get away with a lot of garbage spam, not thinking too much about move combinations. Had I played through on a harder difficulty I think it would have forced me into the nuances of the systems.
The narrative? Pretty abysmal. I don't know if that is, in part, to do with the localization.

I covered this game as part of my coverage of the Xbox Game Pass for May 2022
An average attempt at the dark soul's format.
Unsouled looks good at times, not always but at least the art style stands out here. Players will fight their way across large levels and beat up enemies using a combo system that talks about letting players fluidly move from one attack type to the next if they can time the attacks correctly. Itβs a good promise, and adds an interesting mechanic into the game, but becomes so overly complicated and unnecessary itβs not as fun to utilize.
The enemies In Unsouled are ok, itβs the bosses that look the best, however, most of them are rather easy to beat down with some simple dodges thrown in. At times the graphics can shine, especially in the boss fights, but the story is weak. The real problem is that the game feels so inconsistent, and itβs almost like each level was created at a different point in time, which makes sense with the game being an Early Access title, but it produces an inconsistent experience.
Pick this up if you want a visually stunning but relatively easy game. This is trying to reach a certain style and layer in a bit of the souls-like genre but never gets close to the greatness of that genre. It still has a lot of interesting graphics to look at.

I was a backer of this project and have play-tested the early builds before the developer has announced that this game is going to be published by Neowiz. If you really want to see the game that pushes the limitation of stamina-action game mechanics (AKA souls-like), You guys need to play this game. Imagine someone mixed Hyper Light Drifter, Sekiro, 3D Ninja Gaiden, and Tekken in an iron pot and condensed it into a 5~8 hour game. Definitely one of the best action games in 2021, even without the context that this game was developed by one person for five years. Sure, there are some issues like kinda dull pixel graphics and the bosses(Especially the hidden ones and the final boss) becoming REALLY bullshitty with their unpreventable combos, but hey, the dev guy is a Tekken fan so it is understandable.
