One of the last titles published under the SquareSoft name, Final Fantasy X is an interesting time to be had. Interesting not so much in quotes as that's really the best way I can describe it.
On one hand, you have a particularly goodish story delving into religious themes and philosophy that reflect on the characters (to a point) as they go on their venture. It all ties in very neatly to this concept of finding what you really believe in and evaluating what religion offers, because the followings of Yevon both impart legitimately beneficial uses and harmful overzealous cultlike philosophy.
It's not really as graceful as I describe it unfortunately, because it's paced like shit and the characters are obnoxiously simple for far too long a while for any investment. The dub makes things worse for sure (which has been said to death) but it's just not that well written.
On the other hand of interesting, you have the combat. The sphere grid, which is the progression backbone and customization route of FFX, is the best component. It gives a general track to follow for how your characters can level up but also giving you choices and meaningful opportunity costs to consider. The turn based gameplay is also very good, requiring more attention than your usual FF affair and having enemy optimization and decent balance.
But again, there's drawbacks here. The combat pacing is also trash, with a ridiculous amount of fights that go on for too long and are incredibly boring, optimization generally becoming a simple affair until the hard hitting bosses. The game's combat doesn't really turn into something special until the damn endgame where all of the best bosses are kept and test the system to its limits.
Other miscellaneous notes: The music is prettttty bad, and potentially one of my least favorite soundtracks of the FF series. The aesthetic is well worn if a bit dated at points. The cinematics are very well done though on most regards. Blitzball is trash, so are the rest of the minigames the game forces you through. It's a running thing with FF games but it's at one of its worst incarnations here.
Overall, FFX is a decent overall time that I do recommend trying. You might end up being far more charitable to it than I was. (6/10)

extremely linear gameplay, the story is literally about going for a giant walk. combat is kind of fun and the sphere grid is really cool, (even though if you actually look it up its just a really complicated straight line, but that doesnt matter becuase it FEELS good in the moment). did not bother with the post game because a lot of parts seem very bad (the lightning???)
As much as I found the turned-based battle system to be a bit boring sometimes, being able to change party members on the go was very good. Narrative-wise, the plot was convoluted as hell as expected, and I wasn't enthused by the villain and his motivations. The other party members besides Yuna and Tidus also tend to fade away in the background, unfortunately.
I like some of the characters. The sphere grid system is fun and innovative. I don't really get everyone's love for this game -- I feel like the biggest thing it brought to the table was essentially creating the blueprint for the nearly straight-line walkathon that was FFXIII. Still, it's leagues better than that, if nothing else.
I'd say still the best turn based gameplay in final fantasy with engaging character progression in the sphere grid. Spira I think ends up being a pretty well realized setting too, though I think the game does get a little... overly ambitious and confusing by the end. And it feels like a lot of characters are just sort of along for the ride by the end. But it's not bad.
A great game that I don’t want to play again for a long time. I’ll admit I was frustrated with how difficult the Jecht fight was so it took me a while after beating this to fully appreciate it, but damn this could be frustrating sometimes. Still, a beautiful experience that all RPG fans should have.
Final Fantasy X... A very dear game to me that I've soured on oh so much nowadays.
I love everything but its gameplay. Story, characters, music, locales... FFX is one of the strongest and most immersive RPGs with its world.
The gameplay on the other hand... Every single part of the gameplay, walking, battles, leveling, bosses, end game, mini games... Every part has really big and obvious flaws or annoyances that just make it kinda unfun... And overall boring.
Like I really really breezed through the game. Bosses have clever concepts but are never to tough to overcome sans Yunalesca, and regular enemies are just a Simon Says of looking at the enemy type and switching in the one character for free.
So yeah. Im a bit unenthused by the game. But I still do kinda love it.
