Great game, far better expanded than the original, but the main problem is the controls. I played it on the 3DS (wich has analogues), but still.
Mario 64 from the N64 suffered from its bad camera, but that's okay, coming from a 1996 game. I can't say the same from this one, since the camera and the controls are terrible.
It's a wonderful experience, but it can be really frustrating.

A solid remake, but not my ideal version. My biggest issue is the controls. While the original’s controls weren’t perfect, the remake’s just feels stiff even with a control stick, and the camera is somehow worse. I think the new characters are cool, minus Wario. All of the stars that require him all boil down to “break the black block” they even take stars that were perfectly accessible in the original and just shove black blocks in the path to make you use him, it’s kinda lame. He doesn’t even have new movement options like the others, so he just feels like a way for the developers to lock stars behind in the late game. Besides that, most of the other new content is just kinda there. The minigames are neat, hunting down rabbits to get them isn’t. New stars are cool in concept, but most of them boil down to “collect silver stars” or “press the star switch” with little variety. Overall, I still enjoyed my time with 64 DS, the controls just aren’t my cup of tea and some of the new content is whatever.
does anyone else think its insane that this came out only eight years after the original? thats like if Mario Odyssey got a handheld remake literally next year and it somehow had better graphics
only thing holding this back from being earnestly better than the original is the tank controls. however. im extremely attached to this one

Impressive remake that took a few steps forward but a lot back. The steps forward being that the new content is great, mini games are fun, nice seeing the game with modern models, and the ending stretch is more bearable. The steps back are that it controls much worse, which makes the already frustrating moments in the OG more bad. If the ending is more bearable, the beginning feels more annoying now. Overall a good game but could’ve been a better remake, 6.5/10
