She slowly walks up to me, emanating gatekeep girlboss gaslight energy from every step taken, deliberately. Once she makes sure I am within whispering vicinity, she utters those words

"Makoto get strapped or get clapped"

Ayo Kyoko I will never forget you manhandles an uncontrollable tear frenzy

I'm not the brightest bulb in the room, but neither are they. Do they deserve death for this reason? No!! Hence why this is a series of hopium and copium, and this is the train's first stop. Still kinda funny, these executions really have "mods kill this guy" energy to them. Everything is so over-the-top in its writing and presentation that it's very difficult to be whelmed. You gotta have an opinion on this game. Some people were FNAF kids and I guess I was a Dangan kid... a late bloomer though I was already 15, and since then the only game that came out was a beach episode cashgrab coming out in winter.

I won't sugarcoat it, this is W writing. It's absurd, it's complex, it hits you when it needs to. Kodaka's style is something special. He knows how to blueball his audience and you're still in his grasp. The protagonist Big Mac is a template compared to the others, the whole cast has grounded designs and less complex personalities but they bounce off eachother due to the story's nature, and it's a delight to see. A battle royale with emphasis on relationships and deductions is like, best template ever! So many quality fangames are being made for this reason. Very few are actually completed, people don't see the labor needed for the whole package, meanwhile Kodaka made a sequel in 2 years the mad lad.

Uh oh, someone died. You better not have been watching Shrek 2 in the projector room or you won't have an alibi! The main course is, naturally, the class trials hosted by horror-mascot-before-mascot-horror-games-existed Monokuma! Fun fact: he's feeling white. These transracial statements don't surprise me, he's never been one for being likeable. Gather round fellas, the council has decided- wait, you're part of it. Democracy sucks it should be an authoritarian Kirigiri government but Big Mac needs to grow a spine and somehow outsmart Byakuya, whose face is shown next to "sigma male alpha chad" in Urban Dictionary. No seriously, he faces off an entire country in the novels it's wild. My favorite character is and will still be Sakura, I trust I won't have to explain this one. But, really I only dislike Celeste. She's hyped up to be a whole lot of nothing in the end that can't live up to expectations. The VA's shoulders must be sore by now.

I played this game right next to my college roommate and he didn't talk to me for the rest of the semester

The cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being

When I think back on Danganronpa, I feel its enduring popularity and fanbase was achieved by the perfect storm. It was an edgy Japanese high school murder mystery in the early to mid 2010s. Emo culture was still fresh in our memories, anime was becoming well and truly mainstream with zoomers, and it left enough questions unanswered for fans to come together in online communities to discuss the game, concoct their own theories, and give it word-of-mouth.

The game's visuals also ensured that it would be a hit. Whether it was for the pink blood, the cardboard cutout characters, or the ingeniously designed mascot Monokuma, Danganronpa made a lasting impression on our eyes and minds. As the celebrated cartoonist Zachary Hadel, of Smiling Friends fame, would say, Danganronpa looks 'iconic.'

I say all this because, hell, I was one of those edgy zoomers - one of the first, in fact. I played this game when it was still a PSP exclusive, using the fan translation that I still feel is superior to its official counterpart.

Rarely has a game been so perfect for a certain demographic, but that's not to say that Danganronpa's appeal has faded for newcomers. Its dark humour, memorable cast, striking visual style and absorbing plot handily secure its place in the pantheon of visual novels. If you haven't played Danganronpa before, the best time to play it is now. NOW. Before Alzheimer's disease sets in. Upupupupu!

I spent middle and high school surrounded by Danganronpa fans, during the peak of its popularity. I played and loved Zero Escape. And yet, somehow, I managed to completely avoid this game, almost all spoilers, and the apparently radioactive fandom this has apparently spawned.

I'm so glad I did.

Going through this blind, without any outside biases clouding my judgement, was a phenomenal experience. Even the things I did know through osmosis were obscured enough within the actual plot that even finding out how said things would be revealed was still great. It also made all the deaths hit that much harder.

The gameplay is great, like a more active, dynamic version of Ace Attorney, oozing with style and personality. All the mysteries were a blast to piece together, and none were so out-there to make a reveal feel bullshit. And, I must admit, while I was never crazy about the art style from what I'd seen online, I was very surprised how good it looks in game. Stills really don't do it justice.

If your only exposure to this game is from people saying "cringe" and nothing else, I highly implore you to try it for yourself, removed from all that. I'm very happy I gave this a shot as an adult without bias, because it really is something else.

i hate that i like this game i cant talk to anyone about without them looking at me funny

Anime as fuck and it is not ashamed of that, the story is incredibly entertaining and the cast of characters are range from very intriguing to just Seinfeld laugh track levels of goofy. Gameplay is fun for what a visual novel can be and I quite enjoy picking up Monocoins ...

it's not that bad if you just mentally block out that it's danganronpa in your mind

LLLLEEETT ME OUTT OF HEEERRRREEEEEE

This game rocks and the music makes me wanna get butt booty naked and shake my ass

As a cultural phenomenon? This was a very fun one to watch bloom. I wasn't at ground zero or anything, but I was made aware of the orenronen LP around the end of Chapter 2, and I casually monitored it until around the end of Chapter 3, when I decided I'd want to go through it on my own someday. It was cool to see it bloom from a popular otaku hit unknown outside of Japan to an international phenomenon, seemingly based entirely around the SomethingAwful thread. I know that the official localization team did not cross-reference the thread for the first game, but I saw that "gently caress" hat tip in DR2.

As a visual novel? It's pretty accessible! Danganronpa is fast for a visual novel, constantly piling plot threads and character interactions one on top of the next. Characters are all super memorable and distinct, with lots of potential for favorites. Even the trials, when the dumb know-nothing high schoolers limp their way through solving a mystery and repeat the same facts over and over again, come across as speedy. The variety of the mini-games go a long way toward keeping the gameplay dynamic, something very few visual novels can boast. I especially love the summation at the end of each trial; yeah, it's just hashing out the facts again, but the comic book style, the narration, and the music make it super super hype.

As a mystery novel? ...well, did you fall for 11037?

The closest the first game comes to a decent mystery is probably Chapter 3 (fun gambit). Chapter 6 is an interesting setup, too, but it definitely breaks Knox's Decalogue (something the game itself acknowledges). I don't need the mysteries to be strong mysteries; clearly Danganronpa is happiest as a character and spectacle piece, and it does well enough at that. But if you do want some decent mysteries, you're better off with Ace Attorney.

Later entries in this series kinda run into the issue of characters looking pretty samey. To an extent, I know this is a deliberate choice, but I do miss more unique character designs like this game had with Yamada and especially Sakura.

What I thought would be a bizarro battle royale that's slightly cringe ended up being (kinda) that but more cringe, with Ace Attorney-inspired elements and contents that absolutely make this a product of its time...

...but I also like it? It's weirdly endearing in a way seeing a decent amount of likable and/or fascinating characters trying to sort and debate their way out of insane circumstances and the mysteries into their situation with some great ass OSTs, fun court mechanics, and overall just a unique vibe and aesthetic that can be apart of an embodiment of the late-2000's - early-2010's.

but damn this bear is fucked up bruh.

Apparently I have something for Detective Girls

no one is capable of hating danganronpa more than an ex danganronpa fan. i could genuinely say that this game is the reason for every single bad event that has ever happened in my life, i hate it so much i hate it hate it but i just cant bring myself to give it a 0.5

Yeah you know I actually cant figure out the mechanism by which Danganronpa manages to be as good as it is - cuz it absolutely seems like it should be dogshit. Its like one of those dishes that looks gross, youre going "what??" when they tell you what they put in it, but then you try it and it just really hits. No clue how they pulled it off tbh.

great game! got into the franchise when i was 11-12, i do think theres lots of parts/characters that could've been portrayed much better. sakura & aoi mean so much to me, one of my fav casts. leon & sayaka mean a lot to me and i wish they lived longer as well as chihiro, taka and mondo. i love them

the danganronpa games are great as long as you don't take them too seriously. you'll sorely regret it if you do. this one is actually tons of fun though

i think i lasted 30 minutes. i try to avoid rating games before i finish them but i'll make an exception for this

I like puzzle visual novels. But my first impressions of this famous Danganronpa title was realllllyyy bad for me. You start the game, then get introduced to the characters and every one of them are.... anime stereotypes.

The Anime Stereotypes are my top 10 most hated things ever and the reason I stopped watching anime or watch them rarely, so this really discouraged me to continue. To the point that I didn't returned this game for at least 1 year. But then I returned because I was craving for something puzzley that forces me to think and solve. I can't say it was good as Ace Attorney in that regard but at least it managed to entertain me.

Gameplay
This game have two different segments. That is exploration and contradiction segments.

Exploration works with clicking shiny objects like all the games. I can't say too much on it since it's not too different than any other detective game. I guess only difference is, you are given free time sometimes to do social link persona like interaction events with the character you want to engage that is mostly shallow short events.

My only nitpick is, why there is a fps roaming around system implemented in the first place? when most of the evidence finding is on a seperate 2.5d areas. I don't know but at least I can fast travel from the map screen so whatever.

When it comes to contradiction system, you can immediately realise that how much of a director difference changes everything about the concept of finding contradictions

It uses the same court contradiction system as ace attorney at first glance but contradiction system is mixed with flashy mini games, so it's not just a one continuous press-present system.

How it works is:
1-You have to play the debate minigame where everyone submits their own arguments. You have your "counter arguments" that selected by the game itself for that specific debate, you need to use them on a contradicting and yellow marked arguments in a given time limit.
2-You can take someones argument and use it against on another argument in that debate
3-If asked, you need to show evidence or select option from the 3 possible options that explains what happened
4-In between all of this, you need to play a hangman minigame that works with selecting specific letters in that given empty word area.
5-and you play a closing argument minigame, that is essentially a shitty rhythm game
6-Oh lastly you do create a comic to show the order of the events

If we look at what I just explained, we can essentially see that this is a more casual friendly puzzle system. Not just the interactable only arguments between others marked with yellow for you, also your own argument counters selected by the game itself. If we also remember that it's mixed with minigames and also a point that I didn't explain until now that is: it's impossible to "fail "with how you can revive with the revive option when you fail. Yeah it's a more casual friendly puzzle game.

It looks badly first but what it lacks on characters and gameplay depth, it does have on it's suprise element. It uses it's flashy minigames back to back to shock you harder for twists and this is in my opinion what it makes Danganronpa entertaining.

I can't say it's a perfect system tho, it's wacky argument gun usage aiming is a bit too finicky, hangman minigame's random letter system forces you to wait too much, also it's closing argument rthym minigame is.... feels garbage to play and comic book selectable photos hard to identify what they represent sometimes.

But because of how it uses them for the shock value, I guess it manages to entertain me in the end. So... It's at the positive end for me.

Story
So, story is about a death game: people stuck on a school and if they want to be able to exit, someone have to kill someone. If they are not found then they can exit from the school. But even if they don't want to kill, they have to because the mascot monokuma forces everyone with blackmails. So this means there is a lot of murder cases to solve for us.

I can't say the majority of the cases in the story good tho. Most of them builded on shocking twists. Twists are fun don't get me wrong that is what makes it entertaining, but when majority of the cast is too cliche stereotypes, it's hard to connect with what is really going on. It feels like you are here for the moment of mystery not for the connections or relationships even if the main character keep saying how much he cares about everybody.

Because of that game started to lose on me slowly but last two cases managed to win me back with how they tried to inject a character a bit on them. So because of that I can say I actually liked some of the characters. They are really few, but they managed to change my perspective about this game... at least a little bit. Because I still don't like majority of the cast.

So, I enjoyed the game(mostly the end part). It's not perfect for me with some gameplay annoyances and the problems with the cast for me. But it still managed to entertain me. If you want right now to get lots of suprises and twists, I would say try this game. Because you will love it probably.

I like this game sadly. Pretty funny and good VN cant lie

8.5/10

Cuscuz paulista.

Me: Mom can I have Ace Attorney?
Mom: No, we have Ace Attorney at home.
Ace attorney at home:

Kinda shitty that I was spoiled who the mastermind is just because I've seen a statuette with him on a nerd online merch store.
The trials are pretty cool (especially the addition of minigames just because I didn't expect them) but don't know everything felt too easy even though I played on the hardest difficulty.
Pretty interested if the sequels will improve the trial and investigation sections maybe also the writing.
Kyoko and Hina are the best girls.
The OST felt kinda meh in the beginning but with each chapter it grew on me.
Maybe I am a big nerd but I've enjoyed Celeste's conversations with the gambling manga/anime references too much.

A lack of hope implies the possibility to fill the space again with something stronger

I purchased this game a few years ago. The reason? A girl that I liked loved this game, and being the
pathetic person that I was of course I would try to play it to have some interest in common. Not only this
is a garbage piece of shit anime-like game, but the fact that someone has the audacity to make you pay
for some poorly rendered objects and lazy animations with a boring premise is precious. Also
that girl rejected me at a party after months of sluggish conversations in chat, fuck her. Have self respect,
don't do anything that you would not do just because you want to impress someone.
Trust yourself.
