First Dragon Quest game and it didnt really win me over at all to be honest. The game is WAY to long, has too much mandatory grinding and lets not even start with the 3rd arcs plot, or the awful ost the entire game.
While it may look pretty, its certainly not a game id really go back to if im being honest with myself.

very traditional rpg with some modern qol. performs very well within this framework, with a lot of fun customization with your party composition and their builds. figuring out strategies that work well is satisfying. also includes customizable difficulty for anyone who wants a challenge.
the story is basic but told fairly well. however, i began to get impatient with the length of cutscenes by the end of the main campaign, and i failed to be particularly invested in any of the characters besides sylvando, who i love dearly.
by the way, it would've been great if they hired a composer for this game, so it could have more than 10 songs playing over a runtime of at least 60 hours...?

Fine for what it was. There's a lot here that I miss from older games in the genre, but there wasn't enough for it to truly stand out either. Half the time, an idea it has, I can think of another game that executes it better. Final Fantasy VI is one such example.
On a side note, I thought the music was handled in a very misguided way; a prime example of this is when the battle theme is used during a stealth sequence.

What an experience. There is so much content in this older version (not playing the S version). That I didn't feel the need to play the newer version whatsoever. It feels like a complete game and no paid expansions so it bring u back to the ps2 era where when you bought a full priced game, you got all content from the get go.
- The gameplay is classic Dragon quest, incredibly fun to actually just grind but understandable if its boring compared to other modern RPGs.
- The Plot is good as its a simple plot and has some memorable elements in it. The characters is where the game truly shines.
- The OST is good for the game but not memorable outside the context of it.
