This game is a rare instance where the gameplay saves it, rather than the story. That's not to say that the story is bad, it's just poorly handled given the scope and depth it's trying to achieve. Regardless, it's a fun story with fun characters, but players be warned.. As cute and fun as it looks, it's VERY dark and I would encourage younger players to be mindful or just straight up avoid.

The story gets JRPG'd near the end, but the combat is awesome and renews itself pretty well during the game with new mechanics and abilities. Most characters are pretty fun and interesting too. Great music. Graphics are great but the artistic direction of most regions makes them look dead. Great time though

An okay JRPG that is sadly too generic for its own good.

My third Tales game I've played, after Symphonia 1 & 2. It does feel like those games, but something is just missing. The story is interesting, but both basic and confusing. Just a group of slaves fighting against their masters, but then there's this sentient planet that wants to absorb all life off another planet and it made creaters who created our main characters... and that is all explained in a giant plot dump at the end of the game.

Doesn't help that the characters are, while likable, are also generic as hell. We have the Amnesiac hero who teams up with a mysterious girl with powers. Add in a bookworm magic user, an idiot tough guy, a flambouant man who constantly speaks in poetry, and a armored tough girl, and you have the entire cast. It also feels like we got less allies then we should, as there are two empty spaces that just never get filled. Hate the repetitive dialogue, especially at the end of the game. Every time you fast travel, some makes a comment, and they are all annoying as hell.

The combat is your typical Tales combat, with many moves making it into the game. It does get repetitive, and you just don't get enough moves to make it unique. Hate the shared magic bar for healing, especially when it costs more to refill then buying revive potions. Like the team up moves and limit bursts, though they also got repetitive. Hate that the opening area has a creature that is level 40+ and you can't even take him on until 3/4 of the way into the game.

I did enjoy the game to some extent. The world is nice and fun to look at. While repetitive, the combat is fluid and easy to pick up on. The Villains are easy to hate and fun to fight. Like the interactions between the characters, until they run out of dialogue and start repeating themselves. I wasn't bored until the grind to get the platinum trophy.

Still, the game would have been better with some minor tweaks. Tell me the level of a creature before I fight it, and not in the way they did, by having a character be like, "lets avoid him," cause they did that even when I stood a chance of winning. Making it easy to track what items you need to level up your weapon, or give you a way to buy them. Have bonfires before bosses with a merchant, instead of a magic healing circle. A larger magic bar or cheaper way of refilling it.

This isn't a bad game, there are many fun things about it, but it just takes a lot of patience to get though all of it. Waiting more than half the game to take on one stupid boss from the first area was just so tedious and a waste of time. While i'd play this again before Symphonia 2, this is nowhere near as compelling or interesting as Symphonia 1. This is passable, but there are a lot of Tales games, and I feel like this one will always be the "meh" of the franchise.

First tales game I ever played, characters were really good and the gameplay was great but got same-y pretty quick - once you have a good strategy, just repeat for the rest of the game. Story was good in the beginning, and got pretty anime toward the end

Fuck this game every other tales game clears it

My intro to the Tales series.
+Gorgeous presentation and visuals. Can't say enough good things about the art style.
+Combat feels fluid and generally satisfying. Skill animations are a visual treat
+I liked the character moments through skits, scenes, all the cute dialogue in battle and just exploring the overworld

-Writing was not all there. The second half of the game feels much weaker than the first half, and it feels like what the game was building up and the themes it was about get tossed out the window.
-Some of the dialogue was painful, I won't lie
-The way the ending is resolved.. Nothing more to say.

Still had plenty of fun overall. Was a good time with Shonen Anime the JRPG

There's definitely some good here, and I can see why this series is popular - but for me the problems with 'Tales of Arise' made it too much to persevere with.

I need to qualify that this is my first experience with a 'Tales' game and first impressions were fine, if slightly underwhelming, given the grandiose intro cutscene. The story works well enough, focusing on an oppressed race of people being enslaved and then rising up against their totalitarian and more evolved overlords isn't exactly original, but the telling of this is precise and clear. The world building in general is probably the best thing about the game in truth. The gameplay is also serviceable enough, all battles are arena based and are usually quick enough to not outstay their welcome. I do though wish there were more layers to the combat as the battles are never as spectacular as what the flashy special moves would indicate. I was never at any point blown away with anything with 'Arise' but the loop and story was enough to keep me coming back, but then a grind became encouraged (which I ignored) and I was underleveled for a boss. I could've went back and farmed for a counter-gem and killed some more minions, but if a RPG wants me to retread old ground it needs to make it worth my while. 'Arise' fails here due to its small scale world, mediocre mob variety and corny characters

All though a decent game, i cant really say in good faith that it didn't disappoint me in some aspects.... a lot of the soul that made Tales Of one of my favorites in the first place is straight up gone in this game.
The new gameplay is a 50/50 from me, while fun it really just made it less interactive then before. The plot never really stuck with me and neither did any of the characters get really good in my opinion.
As a hardcore Tales Of fan, id say this game was okay to semi good

Starts off strong, beautiful world, interesting battle mechanics, engaging story. As it continues all starts to fall apart. Battles tend to drag on for too long towards the end game where you slap the same boss for an hour before getting one-shotted. World is beautiful but not much to do in and interact with. Story falls off once it enters the 2nd arc and becomes corny beyond repair. First 20 hours were magical with a sour latter half.

It drags a lot by the end, but i still had fun

I was kinda ready for this to be over by the end, but I did enjoy most of my time with Tales of Arise.

Boring story, repetitive combat and too much innecesary dialogues.
Just a fast-food JRPG with better graphics.

had so much potential :( still love it though

pretty damn good game. addictive. attempting to platinum. you can play as 6 characters but i just end up playing as the guy on the cover

First time I was actually dissapointed with a Tales game right from the start. shitty writing, and a combat system worse then graces, actually I think I prefer some of the 2D combat from before graces to this. And this was released in 2021, the latest game in the franchise, it has no excuse being this bad

Tales of Arise has been awarded best RPG of 2021 in the Game Awards, and I agree it's a good game. It follows the traditional town-dungeon-boss loop, but also has some open world elements as you progress. Here are some of my thoughts:

I liked the story, characters, quick fighting system, item and weapon building system, outfit skins, and theme songs. I didn't like the idle chatter (it's just too much) and the voice acting during battles (the Japanese voice is better for me).

All-in-all, there are more pluses than minuses. It is a game worthy of playing for the JRPG fan.

A very boring one-note plot bogged down even further by bad design decisions all over the place, mainly ones that force you into buying microtransactions, wafer thin content wrapped up in nothing more than flashy combat.
The final nail in the coffin for me was the bad localisation work, miss-matched subtitles and typos everywhere.

You have seen everything in this game before somewhere else. But man it does it all so well. Endgame combat is some of my favorite ARPG encounters ever

they best rename this shit to tales of boredom

All the time it feels like I’m consuming something low quality. The art is so generic, the camera on combat is so bad. The dialogues in comic book style are horrible, with many of them with a animated character moving only the mouth and the entire body totally stagnant. This was the last chance I gave the series. The only impression that remains is that it's just a JRPG fast food, and it's not even a good one.

The natural evolution of the Tales Of series, and of course, like every Tales Of, all characters are lovable and interesting. I love the relationship of the characters.

Currently playing, start was a bit slow however it picks up after the first few hours. If you like a meaty story that really dives deep into character development and relationship building this is for you. The gameplay is nothing special , a bit of button mashing with some mechanics that need more attention.

The world is also beautiful with different varieties , but in my opinion, the real attraction here is the story and characters.

Really loved it! Only tales game ive ever played but i really enjoyed it. Loved the combat as well!
