Batman is one of the greatest comic book heroes which naturally means he has had a lot of video game adaptations, but when this came out in 2009 it was unlike any previous superhero game. The combat was good, the story was great, the atmosphere and horror elements worked extremely well, and the game featured the two best voices for Batman and Joker respectively. Despite being improved upon and usurped by its successors, Arkham Asylum is still a great Batman game. While it may not be as good as Rocksteady's future releases, it does have a great horror atmosphere that isn't repeated in future installments.

Why did the Jinkler laugh at Officer Balls? Is he a silly billy?

Legal (?)

Arkkam City is so good that it overshadows this. Asylum still rocks socks.

All its aspects in gameplay are flawed in someway, and dont fully realize their potential. However, the sheer amount SAUCE in this game carries it through. The atmosphere, characters, things to find, just the sheer love for batman oozes out of this, and you really feel that. Despite all the flaws, it really is worthwhile, and im excited to see how the sequels improve on it

A certain youtuber has popularized a certain meme that this game “makes you feel like Batman” but honestly this game makes you feel as batman as any other action character I can think of.

Many would hail the Arkham series as one of the best adaptations of capeshit within the video game landscape, but really the competition just isn’t all that tough to begin with. To my knowledge, the only ones that people even respect to a very high degree in the first place are the recent Spidey games by Insomniac and the beloved Lego games which are still honestly pretty brain-dead games. Honestly though, this game is just as simple as those lego games but it works very well for the most part.

One thing these games do that “makes you feel like Batman” is definitely its presentation. The sparse use of colors with everything tending to be very dark and monotone really sells that this is indeed a batman game that can be placed quite comfortably with its other incarnations in other mediums such as the Nolan movies or the original animated series. Maybe it's just me but the animation models how Batman runs and fights also feel awfully familiar to how you’d see him in the cartoon or comics recreating that campy feeling. Surprisingly it doesn’t clash at all with the overly serious grimdark setting of Arkham and just feels like another episode of Batman’s adventures.

Though despite being an iteration of Batman’s adventures, this is honestly quite light on the storytelling for what happens to be a superhero story. Basically, Batman puts Joker into Arkham only for it to be a trap where Joker then proceeds to put Batman into his playground against his rogue’s gallery. This is effective in platforming this action game but doesn’t really make the player really pay attention to the actual narrative beyond “whoa Batman is up against this villain next”. Granted, it honestly doesn’t have to be anything more than what it is since its fun for what it’s worth in running around Arkham Asylum in the first place.

The gameplay is honestly just pretty good, but nothing actually substantial. I’m quite disappointed that the combat has this weird auto-lock to enemies where you don’t really have to control Batman’s direction all that much and really just mash the attack button while occasionally using the counter button whenever the visual indicator for it appears. What’s the actual highlight however is definitely the exploration and stealth in trying to maneuver through the different buildings without getting caught and solving easy but interesting puzzles on the way to your next destination. This part really does feel like an episode of BTAS where Batman has to solve a situation a villain has put him through which I do appreciate.

I like Batman Arkham Asylum. If you like the caped crusader, it's definitely a game worth playing. One thing I forgot to mention actually is the element of horror of the unknown in being in an asylum which I found very engaging. This is especially heightened with the Scarecrow segments which really got me immersed as this being a Batman story. Sometimes the models and combat can feel a bit stiff though, but that is more so because it's a PS3 game more than anything. Good time to be had with this one, worth the 15 hours I put into it.

It has its flaws, but its importance and quality are immense, and time is the only thing that makes it less incredible.

Batman simulator. The OG and still probably the best one.

there is a non-zero chance the game crash jump scare could've genuinely bricked someone's 360

Laid the groundwork for one of the best series in the medium. While its sequels improv on most of what this title offers, it's still stands tall with it's expertly crafted Castlevania style map. The Asylum makes such an impact that it resonates throughout the whole trilogy. Could stand on it's own and still be known as a classic, but thank god they made a sequel cause gahdahm

The living conditions here suck. No way this is all up to code.

So much better than Arkham Knight is almost unbelievable. I should have started through this one. What happened to Rocksteady? Is this the fate of every once prominent medium-sized studio who goes full-blown AAA? Bigger and bigger, never better?

It's not only that it's more focused, it actually feels like there's a story to tell. It's not a great story, it's the usual superhero fanfare, but it works so, so well in the context of the game.

The Metroidvania-inspired exploration was great, the Asylum is moody and atmospheric, and the combat that at the time was innovative was implemented to perfection in this game with the more subdued fights instead of throwing 30 enemies at once at you like Knight did.

Also, while this is technically a stealth game, this game might just have the two best 'stealth section in a non-stealth game' I've ever played, since the both of them played so differently from the rest of the game: the Scarecrow sequences were amazing, and worked really, really well as this series introduction to Batman's past. The last sequence was especially great, it was a great 4th wall break and actually made me think for a moment my PS4 was fried lmao. And the Killer Croc sequence, though simpler, had me on the edge of my seat and tense through all of it. And best of all, both of them felt really fun to play, especially since they just didn't throw you back at the start of it for failing once.

The only criticism I can really muster is the whole Poison Ivy sequence. It wasn't bad, but narrative-wise it felt pointless and detached from the rest of the game, almost as if they just needed something to pad more content, and her boss was terrible.

Now on to Arkham City, after Knight I'm kinda uneasy but this made me hopeful.

The best Batman trilogy of games.

While it's not the best Arkham game it's damn close. Being able to explore Arkham and all of it's facilities while son many villains are on the loose mixed the games gritty art style creates a fantastic atmosphere. Plus the combat is fantastic but that kinda goes without seeing as tis game basically sprung and entire genre of action games.

I will personally throw you into Arkham if you think this game is bad

Ce qui me plut à l'époque me séduit encore aujourdhui.

Not just the beat-em-up, the stealth oriented preying-upon-armed-goons angle was such an insanely COOKED creative choice to embody the caped crusader. Attractively gothic detectivism that turns into a reverse-survival delight through seismic punchy combos and techno-noir sleuthing. So tonally splendid you'd groove from the ceremonial pacing running from one villain showdown to the next and game over screens down to the badass slow walking, gets a bit formulaic with far too easily readable boss fights to the point of unchallenging linearity, still takes a conceptual blast of comic book roots through amazingly ominous sequencing including a mindbending Scarecrow that toys around videogame metaphysics to amusing effect and a toolbox of crafty sneaking made particularly priceless when seeing the last armed guard running around while panicking helplessly. Solid pacesetter.
