Fun for the while I played, and a great choice to play on the couch with friends. Nowhere near as good as 2008 London though.

It's ok. The story got a little boring though

I'll say the same thing I say about this whole franchise: it's ok. Doesn't do a ton to stand out. The story mode is fun at least and it's a very polished experience altogether. I did get a lot of enjoyment out of the 8-bit style games though, those were fun. Bottom line, if you've played a M&S @ the Summer Olympics game before, you've kinda played this game before, and vice-versa.

Unfortunately, this is the Mario and Sonic Olympic Games game I enjoy the least. My score is still high though because this series holds such a special place in my heart. My main issue here is the Joy-cons. I think the motion controls of those make movements much more difficult than it used to be on the Wii. This isn't necessarily the games fault but it still impacts gameplay. The button control options are very nice though and usually work well in my experience.

There was no Olympic Games that happened in 2020, this game came out in 2019, and the actual games happened in 2021
Isn't that neat?

Just a bit disappointing compared to London 2012, not bad just nothing outstanding

The soundtrack was alright but after the back to back bangers of the Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016 soundtracks this was really lackluster in comparison. Way less remixes then before (with the few remixes in this game also not being as good as previous games) and the original soundtrack in this game is a notable downgrade from 2014 and 2016.

This series lost the few things that redeemed it as the games went by.

how do you fuck up mario and sonic at the olympic games this should be easy

This game is a Persona reference

Terrible. Ever game has different controls and feels too complicated to jump from one to another. Not a fun party time game.

I don’t think SEGA knows what to do with these games anymore

While the Rio game seemed like it didn’t want to be a Mario & Sonic game, this one delves into it a lot more, making this game feel like a celebration of Mario, Sonic, Tokyo and the Olympics.

This has a full story mode which involves Mario, Sonic, Dr. Robotnik and Bowser getting sucked into a video game made by Dr. Robotnik based o the 1964 Tokyo Olympic games. This is a pixelated game that features the famous classic looks of Mario and Sonic, with Sonic based on his Mega Drive games and Mario based on the original Super Mario Bros. The story switches back and forth between retro and current times, going through each Olympic event in the game, so no need to repeatedly do the same event or grind. It’s the best story more in the Olympic titles.

Throughout the story you’ll also encounter minigames, both 2D and 3D which, for the most part are a lot of fun. There’s ones where Sonic is chasing a train or a taxi, Mario flying a plane in a side scrolling shooter, Mario sneaking through a museum, finding toads in a crowd and some more. These are a great addition and can be played on their own once you’ve gotten past them in the story.

The 2D events are a lot of fun. They’re simple, but they’re supposed to be (apart from Volleyball, which I couldn’t figure out). Diving is surprisingly a lot of fun, Shooting is a bit like Duck Hunt and there’s just a lot of charm across all 10 of them.

The 3D events, for the first time, contained none that I had trouble with or flat out hated. The standard events still have character powers, making returning games like Rugby Sevens even more fun. Skateboarding and Surfboarding are fun new trick-based ones and Karate has a surprising amount of depth to it. You have different controller options, with all except Discus having options that don’t involve motion controls.

Dream events also return, although there are only three of them. Dream Racing is a lot of fun, and is essentially a simplified Sonic Riders as characters race downhill on hoverboards. Dream Shooting is also a target shooting third person shooter and very enjoyable. Karate is the weakest dream event, but still enjoyable.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics is easily the best one in the series, there is a lot of love and detail, right down to lots of trivia about the Olympics.

My sister and I will always cherish this for the replays we got of Eggman.

They did a really good job with this all things considered. Most of the sports are fun to play, save a few desperate duds. Almost feels like a native Mario Sports game in rugby and football. The addition of a story mode is good, as are the mini games, and it’s a nice bit of party fun.

A game that celebrated a sporting event that never was is quite a fascinating piece of modern history. It's not particularly GOOD, by any means (though it gets points for at least trying with the story mode). So average that it's almost painful. Just play the original or the London 2012 one if you HAVE to play one of these games.

i dont understand how but the ds one from 2008 is way better

I don't care about this series anymore really

fraquinho, mas acho que tem seu lugar... por aí

Next in my sonic marathon and in my journey to finish every Story Mode in the Olympic Games games is Tokyo 2020. This is cute! A fun premise that gave the series a bit of new life in the Retro Minigames, fun basic minigames, and nice character interactions. Very happy they finally let sonic talk in these. The Dream events suffer here which is really disappointing, those were the best parts of 2012. Also, very weird that they randomly changed the naming convention with this game??? Like why?

This game confirms Mario and Sonic do not exist in the Akira universe
