More polished gameplay, open world approach and more stuff to do make it a great upgrade over the original in the gameplay front, but I much preferred the story and characters of the original. In fact, besides not really getting to know the new cast as well, some of the returning cast felt strangely out of character, and the game relies too much on knowledge of the previous one to fully stand on its legs.
Still, a decent monster taming game of the more "Pokémon-like" school of game design.

The story and writing is fun even if I'm sure I have terminal brainworms for laughing at some of the meta and fourthwall breaking humor in the game. I think my biggest complain is how simplistic the overall gameplay is. The monsters are just pile of stats, and unlike in Pokemon, there's no interesting abilities, items, or moves to differentiate the monsters from each other outside of there stats. It leads to you just wanting to use whichever monster has the highest rarity and hence, the highest base stats. Status effect moves are mostly useless with chances for them being so unreasonably low it's hard to justify remotely using them over moves that just do damage.
The game is definitely more challenging than the average pokemon game, trainers will frequently have full teams of monsters and will sometimes make you fight multiple trainers in a row. There's some sort of level scaling to keep things a decent challenge throughout, though I personally ended up being like 10 or so levels below every trainer in the endgame which led to me spamming the fuck out of healing items to get by. Overall though, I had fun. It's paced well, the story is surprisingly engaging, and the gameplay, while simplistic, is fun off to get you through the whole game.

When people think of Pokemon clones, they usually go to things like Digimon or Yokai Watch, however, most of these monster-taming games usually have their spin on the genre, making them into their unique title. This game does not and is by and large a Pokemon clone.

That doesn't make it bad, since it understands what makes a good Pokemon game and sticks to that formula well. In some cases, it introduces some minor changes that I would love to see in a mainline title, for example, you can find several items hidden in the map that will permanently increase the amount of money you make or the catch rate of certain Nexomon.

The story is also pretty interesting, some moments that surprised me and some moments even made me laugh a little. The difficulty spike could get a little weird, but never too egregious. There are some issues I had, mainly with its graphics and its creatures.

The game looks like it was made with mobile assets, so it isn't the most appealing thing to look at. It runs well, but I was put off playing it for a while because it looked like such a low-effort mobile game you would see ads for. And the creature designs are basically what people who don't know what Pokemon are think they are. Some a cool or cute, but they feel underwhelming overall. Also, each creature only has one type, which made the gameplay feel less diverse than some of its other contemporaries.

If you like Monster Taming RPGs, I think you will find something enjoyable here. It isn't perfect, but it is good and will scratch that itch while waiting for a new Pokemon game.

Just felt embarrassed about how I could literally just be playing pokemon instead

A great creature collector that improves on the promise of the first game in every way. Lots of small touches like the open world and the rhythm game during the capture sequence (which is more fun than it sounds) set it apart from the obvious Pokemon comparison- battle system is still a little flat and just boils down to pure stats but it's still serviceable.

Biggest surprise was the story though, was not expecting the story to be this engrossing but I was really invested and wanted to know what was happening. The lore of the Nexomons was so exciting and I can't wait for a third one.

An improvement over the original and less jank experience overall. The music is also a lot more memorable this time around. I thought I'd care less for the designs of the Nexomon in this game but they grew on me, and I think it might simply be the case of me missing the roster from the original game.
I love what the story does and I'm embarrassed Coco made me laugh as much as he did. YMMV with him. In the end I also actually filled the entire Nexomon database in this game and overall poured 60+ hours into the game, including the Abyssals DLC.

Unfortunately, this game depicts indigenous brown people in an unflattering manner again, however this time they don't have as much screentime.

The absolute best Pokemon clone and stands alongside the best actual Pokemon games (Gen V).

Engaging anime style storyline. Interesting monster designs. Lots of type matchups. Battling is deeper than most Pokemon games but not as engaging as TemTem. Still the story and art style make it worth the $20 to play it.

This has some neat updates compared to the first game.

Nexomon: Extinction appeals immediately with its colorful and detailed presentation. The writing is decent for its gerne, although the humor and 4D wall breaking can be hit or miss. Where the game failed me was in its gameplay. While simplifying the team buildung, monster abilities and combat, the devs choose to make monster catching more involved, complex and tedious. Which is an odd trade-off and not one I enjoy at all, sadly.

A good indie alternative to Pokemon. But it does enough to differentiate itself to stand out on it's own.

A darker narrative than its contemporaries but with enough whimsy and charm to make it all that more unique. The aesthetics are quite colourful, the creature designs are quite idiosyncratic and the battles can be challenging.

The only major negative I can say is the grinding, there's a lot of it, the bane of every monster taming game. Regardless, this is a good alternative to those whom are jaded with Game Freaks recent efforts.

Difficulty: 3/10
Time to platinum: 50-75 hours
Platinum N°: 75

I loved this game! Always wanted that Nintendo implement some kind of achievement system, this is the closer to get a platinum on a Pokemon. The story is one of the high points of the game, is hooking, hilarious and some times very serious. The characters are fun and also the good and bad side of things gets a little blurry with all the things happening in the Nexomon world. It also has a lot of humor and 4th walls breaks and i found myself laughing out loud many times.

The Nexomon: You have dinaosurs, bugs, phantoms, animals and some wierd ones like a lightbulb. The game has 381 creatures (a lot!), and your starter choice are between 9 Nexomons!

Tamers on roads can be challenge more than once (after a couple of minutes) and every time they have more powerful Nexomons or evolve the ones they have giving you a new challenge.

The game is an open world so it was a little overwhelming at the beginnig 'cause every place i went had different Nexomons so i didn't know were to focus.

You have side quests, secret places to discover, you can equip items to your Nexomons to help you gain more coins, exp, or more defense, attack or resistence.

As a platinum is wasn't that hard, but you had to grind specially closer to the end. You must catch all the 381 Nexomons, and some special Nexomons appeard at random, so i spend a lot of time searching for them. You also have to fight every tamer in the game...twice!

For a Pokemon fan is difficult not to compare both games, but at the end i think that's the point. If you never played a Pokemon game you could probably going to have fun with the game, but if you are a Pokemon fan you going to enjoy a lot more of Nexomon. You're going to understand the reference, value the changes, compare creatures designs, laugh with the jokes and would notice all the love the developers (who probably are big Pokemon fans) had put on this game. If you are still reading, i hope this words could help you gave this game a chance, you won't regret it.
