I remember I once compared the Mario Galaxy games to Guardians of the Galaxy

How well that aged

Continuation of the greatest Mario series...fight me

As I recently played (and for the first time) Mario Galaxy 1, it's hard for me to consider it anything other than a kind of 'obese DLC' to a game that particularly amazed me. I can understand that the player of 2010 might have been disappointed to only have 'a sequel'. Its status in 2024 is a bit strange: while we can play the 1st on Switch, the 2nd is 'locked' on Wii. It's important to keep in mind that this game was probably designed around the use of Wii remotes and cannot be 'directly' ported to another console. The Mario Galaxy games are thus victims of the 'motion control' trend of their time. However, I found that the controls in these Mario games were truly exceptional, and going back to more limited controls (I'm currently playing 3D World) was experienced as a regression and simplification.

Mario Galaxy 2 therefore lacks the charm of the first time and is a game that relies on the achievements of the first while adding interesting mechanics. I would rather consider Galaxy 1 and 2 as a single, absolutely beautiful long game. The level design is incredible, the music is incredible, the graphics are incredible.

However, some levels in the 2nd are relatively tough in terms of difficulty. Having recently completed Mario Wonder almost in one go without real hitches, I appreciate that a Mario game offers a certain challenge even in its main missions. I find it unfortunate that a game places difficult levels as a kind of additional content that exists alongside the game. Obviously, this is justified on Nintendo's part, which aims to appeal to a very young and inexperienced audience. We'll never have access to this kind of statistic, but I'm willing to bet that a significant percentage of players at the time never finished Galaxy 2, unlike 3D World or Wonder.

There's no reason to miss out on this platformer. Personally, I bought the Wii (€15) + Galaxy 1 and 2 (€20) + an HDMI converter cable (€25, the most expensive investment) for a total of €60. No need to wait for a disappointing HD reissue.

a sequel as good as the original

still good but not much different from the first.

This was probably the highest quality game I had as a kid, and man I remember being absolutely blown away by some of its gimmicks.

One of the best Mario games ever.

An extremely good sequel with an absurd variety of levels.

The green stars in this game are AWESOME and are really fun little quizzes on how well you know the game, don't let anyone tell you different.

My absolute favorite Mario game and nothing comes even close.

I know people like the first Mario Galaxy a lot more. I totally get that: it's able to better capture the vastness of space, creating and atmosphere that is absolutely magical.

But honestly... I still prefer Galaxy 2: game is just fun. The devs are much more experimental with the designs of the galaxies, giving you more varied gimmicks while keeping the ones from Galaxy 1 that worked (THIS MEANS LESS SPRING MUSHROOMS LESGO).

Also Yosho is there, I love YOSHO. YOSHO is a big friendo.

Plumbers don't wear ties...they ride dinosaurs...in space!

Its more of one of the greatest games of all time, which makes it one of the greatest games of all time

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a spectacular cosmic adventure that amplifies the magic of its predecessor. Bursting with creative level design, Mario explores outlandish planets, transforming with delightful power-ups like Cloud Mario and Rock Mario. The tight controls, catchy soundtrack, and whimsical sense of humor remain top-notch, though the story feels less substantial. If you loved Super Mario Galaxy, this sequel offers an expanded, polished, and even more challenging intergalactic journey.

I nutted across the universe with this game

In my opinion the better Galaxy game.

Perfect sequel. Yoshi is a valuable and appreciated addition to an already great game with a fun gameplay. One of the few titles deserving a 100% completion

I can't explain why, but I really do not like the linearity. Great concepts, but I don't get why it's so much... lesser in scale.

Still, it's Mario Galaxy. So yay!
