Just finished and I have to say I find this title quite interesting. Over the years I had the idead implanted that this game wasnt very good, but its sequal was solid (have yet to play 2) but I must say I find this game genuinely great. It has an interesting atmosphere, the letterboxed screen that is on by default ended up really growing on me, and the early segments really remind of something ide see from saw (environmentally, not the torture porn).
Its gameplay is a bit clunky for 2014 but even still it has a pretty fun survival horror loop, I was constantly just scraping by with my ammo.
The story while confusing I found very compelling, putting together background information gathered from notes you find throughout the game and trying to piece together what the hell is going on kept me wanting to keep going.

While not perfect I genuinely believe Evil Within is a great horror experience that shares some of that RE DNA that Mikami brought to the table, its trippy, and has genuinely tense gameplay. I cannot give Evil Within enough praise, I had a fantastic time with it.

Edit: Have now played the second one and these 2 games have quickly become touchstones of the survival horror genre for me.

Starts well but loses a bit of its speed throughout the game. Can be scary but can also be very clunky. Almost gave it 4 stars but the terrible pc issues cut half a star off.

This game actually looks like it has some cool ideas, but the combat is kinda boring. I really should give it another go one day.

this .. is a game. it's if silent hill downpour, homecoming, all the worst parts of resident evil og 1, 4, 5, 6 was produced by bethesda; clunk, bugs & glitches included.

i'm about halfway through the chapters, so i'll start with things i like:
- some boss designs
- some environments look really pretty & nice art direction
- story sounds interesting though i think i can probably guess what's gonna happen.
- can tell there's a lot of ideas.. don't know if they're executed correctly.
- unintentionally hilarious

now here's the things i don't like:
- limited stamina where if you don't pay attention, the dude will just freeze in place & pant.
- can't run if you're under a certain amount of health. can barely walk.
- hasn't been 'scary.' very of its time where the jumpscares are very predictable.
- very, very, very limited ammo, & you're limited to holding 8 shotgun bullets without upgrades.... teaches you you can sneak attack .. but about ~4 chapters in none of the enemies are able to be knifed
- seems like they want you to use the bow but why the fuck does the bow literally block your entire view while trying to aim.
- SO many insta-kills. no matter what health you are.
- horrible controls & non-intuitive boss fights. the dog made me want to rip my hair out. i still don't know what i was supposed to do.. was i supposed to hide in the grass because there was collision in the bushes.. was i supposed to stand in the middle & dodge it? because the dog would turn in circles & drift like a race car until it hit me.
- can't shoot while crouched
- tries to be an action-horror game but the combat sucks. cutscenes have you doing wild leon-kennedy-like moves but you can't roundhouse kick anyways
- don't really like games/media where they have 'mentally ill' or 'insane' characters almost infantilized
- i'm playing as a cop.

will update when i finish it ... someday ....

Pretty good survival horror greatest hits game let down by difficulty spikes and a bit of an incoherent story.

I hold this series close to me. It was a lot of fun and scary.

Enjoyment - 6/10
Difficulty - 9.5/10

I was let down by this game when I first played it on XBOX 360. I can remember it running really poorly on the hardware and it soured my first impression. Now, I fully completed it on PS4. Its not much better in performance but it was bearable.

My expectations got the best of me because I believed The Evil Within would have been on the same prestige as Resident Evil 4 or Dead Space, and it just wasn't.

The platinum trophy is very difficult because you have to complete the game on the One Hit, You Die mode called AKUMU.

A rough start, but maybe the sequel is better?
🏆

Que jogo bom, melhor que resident evil 4!

I need to come back to this at some point. It was good but not what I was looking for at the time.

Shinji mikami is the goat but I think this may be his worst game. Has some incredibly fun ideas and is paced like an actual nightmare, feels like an extended chase sequence drawn out to like 8 hours. Typical of a mikami game, it has some completely extraneous mechanics which are basically forgotten 1/10th of the way in. Atypically, it has janky animations and feels kinda bad moment to moment to play. Worth playing.

Nobody told me this was the Dark Souls of survival horror beforehand.

The game pretty much hates you. They make several design choices that is intended to make you as weak as possible. The game is scary and disturbing as shit (thanks to a really good atmosphere), and when it's not being scary, the levels all do things to make the experience worse. On Chapter 3, if you walk across one of the houses' porch, the game just kills you with a booby trap. Seriously, no warning, no tips. It's just trial and error. Sprint has its own gauge and runs out super quickly. If you're out of resources but decide to power through the game anyway, the game screws you the fuck over. If you're too scared to loot and explore the levels, too fucking bad, you have to if you want to survive. In Chapter 11, there's a giant fish in your way in a flooded city. You successfully evade it for the entire hour-long mission AND DO YOU KNOW HOW YOU ARE REWARDED??? YOU HAVE TO FIGHT THE FUCKER NOW, WITH LITTLE TO NO RESOURCES BY THE END. The game never lets up on the tension and horror and make you feel just as traumatized as the characters. Despite the frustrations you encounter, it all feels like it was done intentionally. This game is not a power fantasy and wanted to remind the player that despite having a bunch of tools and weapons and wits at your disposal, you still ain't shit. And for that, it has my respect.

Now, let's talk about the negatives, because for every design choice in this game that works to its advantage, there are design choices that work to the game's detriment as well. The combat actually fucking sucks. It overstays its welcome and anytime this game turns into a shooting gallery, it's just terrible. The shooting isn't very good, the movement is way too clunky, and there are way too many enemies in an arena that's mostly a singular path, which means there's not a lot of cover. If there isn't a lot of cover and the game requires you to move around, the movement needs to be super responsive, and it isn't. It's way too slow and the game should stick to being more like Resident Evil and less like Gears of War. On top of that, the story is super fucking bland. I praised how the game makes you feel like you're in their shoes, but it loses me when I'm reminded I don't care about these characters. Sebastian is a bland character whose backstory is cooler than his actual personality. Joseph just kinda becomes a hopeless character and...that's really it. He's just kinda hopeless and starts losing his mind and then just dips out of the script. Kidman would've been interesting but we learn literally nothing about her other than "something isn't right about her". The STEM scientist just dumps a bunch of exposition and then lets the villain kill him instead of moving out of his way. You never really learn what's going on outside of "you're in a simulation that's inside the mind of a psychopath", which sounds cool, but once it's revealed they don't do anything with it narratively. The psychopath in question is Ruvik, who's the main antagonist and has a super cliche backstory that's only saved by some of the voice acting. And almost all of the story is behind the notes in the game you can collect, and if you miss them, the game doesn't ever tell you what's going on, which is just not a very good way to tell a story. And the fact that some of the questions are only answered in the DLCs is just wild to me. Paying money to understand what really happened is not a very good move. Finally, fuck the brain puzzle. I AM FOLLOWING THE FUCKING INSTRUCTIONS. I LITERALLY PUT THE LASER ON THE SPOT AND IT DIDN'T WORK BECAUSE IT WASN'T SPECIFIC ENOUGH. ON TOP OF THAT, EVERY TIME YOU MISS, IT DEPLETES YOUR FUCKING HEALTH. WHAAAAAAAT. WHO'S FUCKING IDEA WAS THIS? They sometimes took the "we hate the player" idea of the game a little too far, and this part was a prime example.

All in all, I do like the atmosphere and some of the bosses. I also kind of like the ending of the game. The whole idea that Sebastian also doesn't know what's going on at the end and the implication that whatever happened freed Ruvik was pretty dope. Other than that, and some memorable moments, the rest of the game was pretty lackluster. Still enough here to like if you like survival horror, but not enough to be more than just okay.

The game's story is a little boring, and other than that, the game mechanics aren't that good.

Bons:

Tried it out for a few hours, just couldn't get into this game so ended up dropping it quickly.

me caguei horrores parece coisas que eu sonho a estrutura e tal

Arrivato in fondo mi ha deluso.

Peak horror masterpiece. It takes the best bits of Resident Evil 4~6, turns them around and makes a very good game that sadly didn't stand the test of time but that's fine. It's an amazing experience and every horror fan should try it. It does not get better than this!
