After 97 finally made the Inputs more lenient, this game goes right back to the strict execution KOF is known for and sadly it will stay that way until KOF 2002.

Very underappriciated Feature in this game is the Random Select Button as it functions differently from most fighting games I've played. Instead of giving you a random character that you're then stuck with until you lose, in this game (and all the KOF games that follow) your team gets randomized after each fight. I think this should be the standart of random select buttons.

While this is arguably the most popular KOF game and more balanced than the previous one I still prefer 97' for its input leniency alone

Love the opening for this one though

Hey what year did this come out again?

O KOF que eu mais joguei na vida, Rugal era um apelão da poh*

Great roster of characters that span across the rest of the Orochi saga, making it a great way to end it. The game's visuals look amazing, with great stage art, animations, and some really impressive sprites for the characters. The soundtrack also features some good remixes and new tracks. The only problem is that sometimes the inputs can need to be a bit too precise, but other than that this is a great entry in the series.
Final score: 9/10

My first ever traditional 2D fighting game, its cool, but I wouldn't put it in my top 5 kof games

This is peak gameplay, having no story or newcomers gave SNK the right deadline to polish the moves and make this a brilliant FG.

The game that got me hooked on King of Fighters. Easily the best day of my life.

saisyu coming in with the hidden peak *whiffs three supers in a row*

No sere Mexicano, pero este juego es bastante divertido de juegar entre compas, aunque no lo toco mucho

The best KOF game of all time.

Its noncanon to the plot, but its a dreammatch entry. You can find alot of fun in this game if you have a bunch of KOF friends too.

I HATE YOU BASKING BALL GUY I HATE YOU

Often you will see people ask what makes The King of Fighters 'different', and typically they will use Street Fighter as a base for comparison, there is many detailed mechanics focused answers to this question, but having ruminated upon the subject for a little while, I have determined the fundamental paradigm: In Street Fighter, characters wear costumes, and in The King of Fighters, characters wear outfits. This paradigm can be applied to the entire genre, for example: Virtua Fighter is a costume fighter, and Tekken is an outfit fighter. Mortal Kombat you might think is a costume fighter but actually it's an outfit fighter. Broadly speaking Costume Fighters are more common, but outfit fighters almost always become a long running series. I have absolute confidence that this intuitive system will be a universal tool for fighting game categorization within a year.

One of the best sprite works in history of gaming, amazing characters, soundtrack and remix of the classic songs and beautiful scenarios in the background. The controls are good and you have some extra versions of the characters (with gameplay from other entries). This is peak fighting game, eternal masterpiece.

FUCK YEAH KOF I'M TALKIN FUCKIN KYO I'M TALKIN FUCKIN TERRY I'M TALKIN FUCKIN IORI, MAI, RUGAL, ANDY, YURI, BENIMARU THIS IS THE GREATEST FIGHTER EVER MADE.

What you got here is a shit-ton of characters, great ones at that, and some snazzy as hell music and killer promotional art courtesy of Shinkiro to go with it.
