My 'Incorrect' Opinions

The games that I have rated significantly higher or lower (2+ star difference) than the average backloggd rating.

People always hail this game as having amazing writing but in my recent playthrough, none of it felt particularly groundbreaking or really even notable in any significant way. Some good bits here or there but nothing to make it so deserving of its reputation.

There's some interesting mechanical ideas in it that make it something like a proto-survival game but it feels so toned down in the default difficulty that it may as well not be there which makes it hard to give it any credit for that either.

And on top of all that, it's still built on that broke-ass janky-as-hell Bethesda engine so in my 35-ish hour playthrough it crashed to desktop and corrupted my save like six times or whatever.

This is another one of those chill vibes games that should've been up my alley but completely wasn't. I think at least part of it is growing up around farms/farming really put me off from wanting to play any games about it. Farming games for enjoyment feels like some real city slicker bullshit, in my opinion. Also, I was never really sure what to do each day. The day started, I watered stuff, and then would just go to the mines to hit stuff with a sword or whatever because it seemed like the only forward progress to make and since the combat felt a bit vapid I just quit playing instead.

I'm very much a chill vibes type of gamer so I expected this to be right up my alley, easy five star slam dunk. But I didn't like how it felt to control (at the time my controller was broken so I had to use keyboard and mouse which probably made it feel worse) but also by the time I climbed up the mountain and got to a point where it told me to go back down and collect more gold feathers I just... didn't want to. None of the races or minigames had been particularly interesting to me and I had very little interest in exploring more than I already had. The game somehow completely missed the mark for me.

Halo 2 on it's own is okay but nothing special but the Anniversary graphics update make it really hard to like. The new texture work feels incongruous with the style of the original Halo 1 and 2 and the new lighting makes it really hard to see anything. I had such a frustrating time trying to play this that it was hard to actually have any fun with it.

Someone needs to bully me into writing a full review of this game because I need to convince the world that this game is dogshit. I think two stars might be generous for this one.

Part of the problem is I don't like how the dragon engine combat feels. So most of the gameplay felt like ass in a pretty bad way. But also the story feels like a slap in the face. Remove Haruka, the second most important character in the whole franchise, immediately in a very stupid way. And the ending feels like business people forced it to end a certain way because it feels completely cowardly to do what they did.

There's some nice bits here and there but, good god, the main portions of this game are just fowl to me.

I didn't find the bad writing or voice acting endearing at all and then the last two hours or so just got super transphobic. I was already pretty checked out at that point but it turned it from "bad" to "genuinely offensive". Also everything feels bad in this game: the running around, the driving, the shooting, the melee; all feel terrible. People say this game is great and compare it to Twin Peaks and it makes me think that if I ever watch that show that I won't like it.

Comedy in games is hard and the writing in this game just does not land with me in pretty much any way at all and somehow it's the least worst of the series. Also I don't like how the shooting feels so it's not even like I could turn the dialogue off and enjoy it for the gamefeel.

The Blue Reflection developers dared to ask "what if we made a Persona game with better combat and without all the weird homophobia and conservative ideas" and yet somehow people don't like it as much.

The combat is fun, the magical girl aesthetic is something that doesn't come up much in games, the writing is delightful, and it's gay as hell. People need to open their hearts and accept that this game rules, actually.

This game isn't more linear than most other FF games, it just doesn't obfuscate it. The writing is actually really good but I think a lot of people playing with the mediocre English voice acting which makes it hard to engage seriously with the actual content of the story. That also leads to people mostly casting the characters themselves aside instead of seeing them for who they really are because this is, genuinely, one of the best casts in any entry in the franchise.

I also just really like the excessive magic-but-by-way-of-technology aesthetic this game is dripping in. Lightning's sword folds up! That's awesome!

Oh and the ATB system rules, actually. Not the best version of combat in the franchise but it's a really good one.

This is another one of those games that is kinda simple but it kind of nails what it's going for which makes me a lot more lenient on it. I can understand why facets of the game don't land with people but, for me, this game hit just right and hit real hard.

For a lot of people, the most important aspect of the 'Souls-like' genre is how hard and difficult the combat is. But for me, the other elements like exploration and world-building and story telling are vastly more important. So, Code Vein, a soul-like that focuses on those things while also making the combat a bit easier is exactly my kind of thing. Also anime vampires is so extremely my shit, just generally speaking. It's like this game was hand-crafted to appeal specifically to me.

This game is kinda thin in terms of content or what you do so I get why people might rate it a bit lower but, for me, I feel like the game set out to hit a certain vibe and nailed it. It really perfectly evokes that feeling of packing up your stuff and moving out of one place; wrapping up one chapter of your life and being on verge of starting the next.

This game takes all the interesting writing from the first game, throws it out in a way that feels like this game's writer(s) had a real chip on their shoulder or something. Also this game wouldn't stop crashing or softlocking so I replayed the first hour like five times because there's no manual saving either.

I think I can understand why people would rate this lowly: it's "only" a clicker/idle/incremental game. But when you take it on its own terms and look at it as an example of that genre, it's a pretty solid one of those and was, ultimately, a foundational entry in the genre. Clicker Heroes was one of the biggest successes in the genre and laid the groundwork for what the default template of a clicker game became.
