Everything I played for spooky month 2022 ranked

Only ranking things I finished. Ranks are based on personal enjoyment. I focused mostly on arcadey games this year but I squeezed in a couple adventure games and traditional survival horrors as well which were mostly new expereinces. There is no Backloggd entry for Tegami but it's rather weird to rank anyway so whatever lol.

This was the first time I got every ending together and I'm truly blown away by this game's bleak tone after all these years. The themes of isolation, loss, and having to pull one's self up are truly inspiring. A very nostalgic game to me as it was my first exposure to "hidden gem" games when searching for roms as a child, I suppose.
Not even the biggest metroidvania fan but everything about this game always blows me away. One of the most fun games to sequence break, especially in the water area. The lack of RPG elements really help the game stay challenging throughout its entire duration and the gothic atmosphere is unparalleled in its era especially. Also the way NPCs manage to talk shit to Firebrand's face and behind his back simultaneously is hilarious.
I always point to this game when people say tank controls are "aged badly" or whatever. This game simply becomes more fun every playthrough as one masters the ranking system to upgrade guns more and more. It even surprisingly had a few scares https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/826960021274492948/1027505810374402148/you_cant_get_me.mp4
Nothing to be said about this game that hasn't been said before. First time replaying it in ages and it's still as beautiful as I recall. The PCE's killer app for a reason.
Also discovered if one plugs a 6 button controller into this game, Richter will just uncontrollably teabag the ground until it is unplugged, reminds me of Ryu moonwalking for eternity in PCE Ninja Gaiden

I play this every year for good reason. The story tells so much with so little. I always feel so nervous and upset during the Jennifer boss fight. The sheer amount of mirrors also means I'm always second guessing which one will have clones on my replays. Also surprisingly lacking in artificial difficulty for a "quarter muncher" game.
One of the absolute most trollish games I've ever played. I thought my game was glitched out when the main character burped for 2 minutes straight. Also the puzzles are random which btfos the gamefaqs user. Fav part was walking back and forth across 30 rooms for 10 minutes straight just to grab one disc.
I really miss this style of VN. The dulled yet animated backgrounds and lack of portraits really combine into an atmosphere that drew me in the entire time, even if the story was ultimately rather short and simple. Also watched the movie... it exists.
I had played Chronicles before, but never x68k. While this version is a bit rougher around the edges it does some really interesting things. For example, the painting in Death's stage changes depending what time of the year it is, and the werewolf fight's clock tower hands reflect your system time. This is possible in PS1 but only with a manual entry code.
Also the remixes here are amazing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqyH4phP5ZA
Most of what I wrote in my Electro Sperm review holds up here, to a somewhat lesser degree due to the reduced combat depth https://www.backloggd.com/u/C_F/review/217100/
Reminded me of Newgrounds flash games with its artstyle. It's basically Snow Bros with a Halloween theme instead of Christmas, so it's better. The final boss theme goes way harder than it has any right to.
This game is satanic lmao. Went through it with a friend, one of the most charming games out there and one of the OG cult classics for a reason but it's not something one should expect to just breeze through.
Really cute. I'm the customer who demanded Jurassic Park snacks. Wish it was longer.
There really isn't another game like Psycho Dream. The repetitive music and at times featureless sprites really make me feel like I'm slipping into insanity. Also the homage level to Edo no Kiba was a neat touch.
WISE FWUM UR GWAVES
This game just sorta stumbled into being a yearly tradition for me to play. I heavily value having experiences I can just turn my brain off and relax to for smol durations of time I suppose. I enjoy showing people the twist ending and such too. Extremely basic but doesn't outlive its welcome.
Just a quick lil romp that's fun with friends. For a run n gun, the laser weapon and 3 way shots are surprisingly powerful. I appreciated keeping my weapons upon death, Metal Slug could never.
I want to like this game and while I see why somebody else would I simply can't get into it. The lack of things i love from SH such as UFO endings, radios, gun variety, etc just mean it's not a /CF/core experience.
The level design itself is pretty bad, but I still would rec one playthrough for hardcore House of the Dead fans tbh? It's definitely very interesting seeing an early attempt from Sega.
Some of if not the greatest atmosphere and storytelling in an adventure game but sadly it is a very buggy and nearly unplayable mess that's mostly forgotten for a reason. I hate to do this but I would rec watching the game via a YT playthrough.

Also made it somewhat far in .flow and Waxworks. Both were ok I'd probably rank them above Psycho Dream and Vampire Night Shift.
