Interesting little attempt to create a complete seamless open world Mario game that falls in the same trappings as Odyssey of having absolutely basic ass platforming and practically zero actually interesting challenges and problems to solve. The world structure is impressive tho and soundtrack absolutely claps so it's better than Odyssey on behalf of that alone.

When it comes to 3D Mario you kinda have a few things you’re gonna be imo
You’re playing for the movement tech, of which you utilize to make your own challenges
You play for comfy SOUL vibes
You play for the moment to moment level design as it evolves throughout.

Imo I think like, 3D World was really good at the middle option already (it was good at the last option too) and I think an open world that focuses on that part is better for it because the bonus worlds already get the best mileage out of the mechanics you can make for level design. I don’t think Bowser’s Fury was ever really clinching on some exciting new mechanic to begin with other than Kaiju warfare I guess, so I think it functioning on just vibes really helps 3D World a lot and makes it a more complete package

Yeah it's really good as a comfy vibe game and it does make SM3DW a better package, but for me it rat out of the charm a bit once I realized that essentially it's just several short 3D world levels placed in an open world that you play through a few time with little variations of the gimmick each. Good thing it ended shortly after that.

If they manage a full game out of BF with complex movement and larger islands that match the breadth and creativity of SM64 levels? Now that game could bang hard.
