A competent sidescroller, but far too easy on the normal difficulty. The music is sort of generic for the most part, and even though it's technically a "metroidvania", it doesn't make much sense to backtrack unless you want to 100% the game.
One aspect in which Iconoclasts really stands out is the beautiful and highly detailed pixel art. It can't be overstated how difficult it's to make something this pretty.
Another aspect that stood out for me was the story, it's a disaster. I don't want to go into details out of fear of spoiling the game to the wonderful people who actually take the time to read reviews, but the short version is that the writer had no idea how to establish a certain tone, but still believes pertinent to shove kindergarten level moral lessons down the audience's throat without a hint of nuance. All the "interesting" characters, as advertised in the store page, are little more than caricatures and can be individually described in a single word each.
I got sick of story segments in a way I hadn't experienced since Borderlands, but I still finished the game thinking it would get better eventually, like it was all building up to something. It wasn't.
