Games my Mum has beaten

Videogames are distinct among media in that there is a significant barrier of entry in order to interface with them, perhaps only exceeded by needing to learn another language. This barrier of entry is more readily challenged by the youth whom have both the time and curiosity in other to persevere past it. This 'skill' of interfacing that is developed then allows more and more of the videogame library to become accessible as one grows more confident and familiar with their systems.

My Mum did not grow up in an era where videogames were prominent and due to this, this barrier of entry seems insurmountable. The 'kiddie' games that serve to build up experience are too juvenile to entice her. But not all is lost, not all video-games need finely honed motor skills to enjoy, or to trudge through overwhelming menus or to navigate vast and expansive world with limited direction. Here are a list of games that my Mum has been able to play and enjoy, overcoming this hurdle one way or the other.

Tetris

Ok so like everyone can and has played Tetris at some point in their lives.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
This is the major breakthrough. After helping with the setup (on Switch) and pointing out all the buttons my Mum was able to beat all of these on her own independently. At some points she called me up when she stuck but eventually found that too much of a hassle compared to just looking up a walk-through online which she figured out how to do on her own.

Would recommend again to people wanting to play games who have no prior experience.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
Just more of the same game previously. No help needed from me.
AI: The Somnium Files
AI: The Somnium Files
Surprised at this one! My Mum was able to play this independently after a little work of me showing how it all works in early sections. Its a bit of a step up from the Phoenix Wright games in that there are sections where you have to control a character and navigate 3D space and what you need to do isn't always that clear but my Mum persevered some how.
Disco Elysium
Disco Elysium
This game was found to actually a bit too overwhelming to play with limited game experience. On console the controls and navigating the world isn't intuitive. Even how you interact with people and doors is not clear and there is a lot that can be missed out on if you don't have that curiosity in order to explore a world because navigating it is too frustrating.

It ended up being a cooperative effort with me controlling the game for her and Mum would make the choices as they appeared on screen.

Well worth the effort though. What an incredible piece of art this game is. Being able to share this experience was one of the main reasons why I have been encouraging my Mum to interface with games in the first place.
Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun!
Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun!
Sometimes the need to interface is the hurdle and sometimes the interfacing itself is the appeal. My mum wanted to casually learn how to drum but was disillusioned from the hurdle in accessing online classes that seemed only available on facebook (which she did not have nor want to use). We ended up getting this instead and it seems to scratch that itch although the initial setup of the drum controller is a slight hurdle.
