After loving Resident Evil 2 Remake, I was very excited to jump into this, but I went in knowing the majority of people didn't like it as much. And as someone who never played the original, I liked the game, sure it really is not even close as RE2R, it's fairly linear, the level design doesn't connect as wonderfully as RE2, Nemesis isn't as interesting as Mr. X, but at least it feels good to play and I enjoyed the story that happens in tandem with RE2's story. I also felt let down when I heard the remake cut parts from the original game, would like if a "Royal" version fixed that. Maybe the biggest problem is that this game came after RE2 being one of the greatest remakes ever made, but I don't know, with the original RE3 being more action based I think it kinda makes sense what they did with this remake.
