An enjoyable but disappointing mixed bag of a sequel. Combat has some nice improvements with more focus on positioning and team attacks while just generally feeling smoother. Hawaii is nice enough for a new area but it lacks the chill atmosphere of Onomichi or Okinawa and the enemies around every corner combined with strange level scaling across the map make exploring kind of a pain. The dungeons are incredibly dull and I would much rather go through the same dungeon from 7 over and over than go through a bunch of identical square rooms connected by narrow hallways. The pacing is also very bizarre with the first half of the game going very slowly. On top of constantly being assaulted with tutorials it takes forever to unlock the job system and the lack of money means you're going to frequently come across systems and shops that all require a ton of cash that you can never hope to have until much later in the game. Substories are weirdly front-loaded so if you do them as they pop up then you'll really be missing a lot of that charming Yakuza levity in the latter half to make up for the main story's shortcomings. The substories are pretty fun though and I like how they took advantage of the Hawaiian setting with stuff like hijinks at the beach and being befriended by weebs. Dondoko island is also an extremely boring minigame and the fact that they force you to interact with it at all is really annoying.

The story is much less compelling than 7's and also suffers from strange pacing issues. The Kiryu section, while I really like what they did and believe it's what Gaiden should've been, really slows down the story and significantly distracts from the plot in Hawaii. Ebina and Bryce suffer from trying to share the villain role and both come out feeling under-cooked. Akane and Lani do disappointingly little despite being the objective of every group in the game. Eiji's heel-turn from helpful guy we knew for like 2 scenes to cartoon villain mastermind is way too abrupt and comical to take seriously. Yamai being one of the only weird and charismatic new characters and not becoming a party member is a huge missed opportunity. Tomizawa and Chitose are fine inclusions but Tomi does kind of overlap with Namba a bit too much. Everyone at least benefits from the new party bingo board system which allows for a lot of cute little mini conversations that make every party member even more endearing than they are already. I also really hate what they did with Saeko. I don't think she's obligated to like Ichiban or anything and his proposal was terrible but her choice to ghost him for a year just makes her purely unlikable. This was especially unnecessary since they really didn't have much romantic buildup in 7. The theme of redemption is also heavily used in every other JRPG so it wasn't too interesting. I wish someone would give me a dollar every time a JRPG villain was going to die and the hero saved them so they could serve their time instead.

...Well I have a tendency to focus on complaints but it was still a fun time overall.

The only game to ever truly portray the American dream. Not killing nazis or fighting for independence, but riding in a cadillac and saving dinosaurs with the bros. It's a pretty solid but standard beat 'em up with bosses that are surprisingly not obnoxious and the guns are fun to stomp fights with.

Fetch Quest. Return to the Waking Sands. Fetch Quest. Return to the Waking Sands. Fetch Quest. Return to the Waking Sands. Fetch Quest. Return to the Waking Sands. That is 80% of ARR. The story is totally unremarkable and the cutscenes are painfully dull especially with only a small handful having voice acting. The gameplay (as a monk at least) was mind-numbing and I just had to press my 3 attack skills in order over and over again and occasionally move out of orange squares. The game looks good and runs well and the dungeons were pretty decent thanks to the multiplayer component and slight increase in complexity for the fights. I genuinely think it would vastly improve the game if they straight up removed everything that isn't a dungeon. It is pretty awful design though to require queuing for story trials that no other player has any reason to replay. I guess next I'll see if it truly does get better 100 hours in.

In terms of amount of content WO3 just can't be beat, especially with all the DLC added in. I will say that it suffers from rampant map recycling and the issue I noticed with WO4 where you're punished for frequently switching characters because everyone joins at level 1 and you don't get enough growth points to make full use of the game's massive roster. That aside, I love how everyone has their unique movesets and the mindless grind is certainly a fun one. All the guest characters like the DOA girls, Ryu, and Sophitia are great additions too and it was always fun to see which characters I would recruit next.

Not a fan. I don't have a problem with 3D castlevania in general since I liked Lament of Innocence well enough, but unlike LoI this one feels nothing like castlevania. The large amateurish-looking tutorial messages and button prompts make it look like an xbox live arcade game and while I like the storybook presentation, the plot material is way too generic. The music is also way too grandiose and the environments, while good-looking for its time, are not very interesting. As for the good parts, the combat is pretty decent for a god of war clone and the hand-drawn animations for the movelist are super slick. Gabriel seems cool enough too though he is standard medieval hero man.

Decent little indie game that has a nice message to tell but insists on making you play through very dull puzzles to get to it. Also has some solid pixel art and music.

Dropped quite a ways into Ichijo's route. Just found it pretty dull, unfortunately. I liked Kageaki but couldn't really bring myself to care about anyone else since the game conditioned me to expect they were just going to be raped and/or murdered in an hour or two anyways and the resulting shock value tapered off very very quickly. The dialogue could be entertaining but walked a very thin line between funny and needlessly long-winded, and while the fights have solid presentation I thought the exposition was unexciting and the constant air-jousting was repetitive. On the bright side I liked the character and mech designs and there were some fun moments like Kageaki endearingly sharing his enthusiasm for racing. I'm sure it gets better in the final route to some extent like a lot of other VNs but since I'm barely getting any value out of it as-is, I'd rather cut my losses and bail out.

Almost as fun as DMC 2! At least the cutscenes are funny.

A charming and heartfelt VN that, despite appearing unremarkable on the surface, hits all the right notes. It's the full package with likable characters, nice art, and a SOULFUL soundtrack that really engrosses you in the atmosphere of young love. There's a surprising amount of routes and while they do vary in quality, the girls are all cute and quite a few of them managed to get me at least a little emotional. The main character's aversion to women can feel inconsistent at times but it opens a lot of opportunities for good scenes with the supportive characters like Yuuji and Tamaki and it lends to a real feeling of growth in the MC and his relationships. My only real complaints would be Ruri's screeching harpy voice, the MC being far too dense in certain instances, and the placement of sex scenes being occasionally jarring. I also accidentally shot myself in the foot by doing Manaka's route first because it is by far the best and I had to spend the rest of the VN comparing every girl to my wife/class president/goddess Manaka Komaki.

A great love letter to Wipeout. In fact it's so similar to Wipeout I'm almost baffled Sony hasn't taken legal action but I guess they'd have to care about wipeout to do that. Great sense of speed and aesthetics, a decent amount of tracks substantially boosted by the steam workshop which has plenty of high quality modded tracks, and some fun challenges make it a great time. I also liked how simple it was to play my own custom music in the game and it ran really well too. My only real issue with the game is the difficulty spike in the time trial challenges which felt absurd compared to the other challenges. While I was still cruising through the races and zone challenges with a nice difficulty curve, the time trials quickly required everything I had just to barely get bronze after the first two or so. Also a minor complaint but having to move to the back button to get out of every menu instead of just being able to click B was annoying.

Cool game. They put a lot of work into the atmosphere, cutscenes and enemy designs and it paid off pretty well. The gameplay is an interesting blend of survival horror and JRPG and despite it being simple, the shooting is weirdly satisfying. The story isn't amazing but it was fun, and it was cool going back to the police station between chapters instead of just being all isolated like in a resident evil or silent hill. It can occasionally be difficult to tell what can be interacted with in the environment, especially with how specifically you need to face some objects to search them and that can be pretty annoying. Dodging enemy attacks can also be frustrating given how tight some of the battle areas are along with the awkward movement.

Far from a perfect game but refreshingly ambitious enough that I feel I can finally be optimistic for upcoming pokemon games for the first time in years. The gameplay aside from the solid base pokemon team-building and battling is alright. It feels very satisfying to catch a new pokemon for the first time since the exploration aspect actually makes it feel like you're discovering pokemon in the wild rather than randomly getting jumped by whichever 5 pokemon are designated for each route. What isn't satisfying is catching/beating the same pokemon 20 times to fill out its pokedex entry so having to engage in that to reach the next rank was pretty annoying. The strong and agile style moves and the accompanying speed-based turn numbers were a small but nice addition to the standard combat. The boss battles were pleasantly hectic but they could've used a few gimmicks to make them feel more distinct from each other. I also would've liked more trainer battles since beating pokemon in the wild isn't really as enjoyable. The story wasn't anything to write home about, particularly the awkwardly hamfisted detail about the pearl and diamond clan leaders being obsessed with space and time respectively, but I enjoyed the characters not being all buddy-buddy all the time and the surprisingly blunt way they'd talk about how they'd get killed by pokemon if they weren't careful. Also Irida's cute. Visually the game could obviously use an upgrade since pokemon can often look out of place in the world with their stiff animations, but I was happy with how well it performed at least given gamefreak's track record. I really hope they build on this game's foundation in a more modern pokemon setting with plenty of towns and trainers because I think they've finally started taking the series in a good direction.

Fun game with a great sense of speed. Plenty of great tracks but the emerald cup in particular has some annoying ones. The high speed, unforgiving tracks and slippery physics can lead to some frustrating game overs but overall the grand prixs are a good time. The story mode is a pain though. I prefer X. Also captain falcon kneels to the MIGHTY GAZELLE.

Has one of the better antagonists and endings in a Yakuza game but is otherwise a side game in every sense. Going back to playing as Kiryu after Yagami is a sharp downgrade and the story is really padded out by bland sidequests that don't even meet the average for the series. Yakuza 6 might have not been a great game overall but it was a great ending for Kiryu so I'm kinda bummed they felt the need to make this game at all. That being said, it is nice to get a few more personal moments with Kiryu after a whole series of his character taking a backseat to political struggles and schemes. Wasn't necessarily bad, but definitely underwhelming.

Wish this played as well as Wave Race. I like yuri so the cute interactions between the pairs are great even though I already saw the kandagawa team story in the anime. There's a surprising amount of care put into the presentation with some smooth menus, nice character models and soulful stages. Unfortunately, it doesn't feel good to play. It feels very slow and cornering feels clunky. The AI is absurdly easy for most stages to the point where I spend most of my gameplay not seeing other racers because I'm so far ahead which nullifies the combat aspect.
