Please go and play this before the Indie game cycle starts. You know, the one where people go "Oh, this extremely popular highly praised indie game sucks actually" and then dog pile everyone who genuinely likes it for like 2-3 years, before eventually the same people turn heel and say "Oh no wait, it IS good" because now disliking the game is the norm, and there's no way they can like or dislike something without spiting someone else.

Seriously, its insane how this happens every single time. It happened with Minecraft, it happened with FNAF, it happened with Undertale, and I feel like there's a good chance that it'll happen here.

I really do hate to write about online fandom wars or whatever, but regardless of those games' quality, it absolutely ruined a lot of online discussion about them in my eyes. So go play this while it's still fun, it's absolutely worth it.

EDIT: Because I was dumb and forgot to mention it, obviously you're allowed to dislike the game. My main point was please just don't be a dick about it regardless of your opinion. I mainly wrote this whole thing because I'm fucking sick of basically all online discourse in general lol

it's lowkey already happening lol
the idea of this happening to something like pizza tower is tragic but inevitable

I'm not sure this'll happen to pizza tower if only because I feel like it's audience is pretty different from that of Undertale or fnaf. People only hated those games because the (children) who liked them would draw, like, freddy and chika kissing and it started getting annoying. So unless people are being weird about mort the chicken and the noid I think it's relatively safe! I hope.
Feel like applying weird fan art to the fandom isn't exactly accurate since that's something you can easily apply to other games and even medias, it's more that those three games are incredibly incessant on recommending them to people regardless of interest, as well as the usual problem of toxicity.

Still I don't think Pizza Tower's gonna get this. I'm with CURSE here, there's not that strong of an overlap of audiences this has with the other three, even if the apprehension towards contrarianism is justified.

damn y'all are much more respectful than i was expecting, i thought people would be shitting on this review lmao

also i do agree that there isn't much overlap with the target audience of these games, it's just sort of a repeating pattern that i hope doesn't apply to this game too

@BlazingWaters yeah there's that, but I didn't mean exclusively fanart. I was just kind of referring to the way they act in general since a lot of them are young adults/children and behave aggressively embarrassing lol. At least that's why I don't think I'll be replaying undertale, negative connotations too strong...

@Shem your review was very respectful and well written, I'm not sure why someone would wanna fight over it... then again I guess it is backloggd lol :P
@moschidae I guess that's fair, but again I'd just use the "fuck the fans" vibe for everything even in things I like, keeps me sane

@Shem I like to think there's enough levelheadedness within this site's typically aggressive userbase that your worries can be met appropriately, especially since somehow people are being hostile about it on Twitter???? Shit's crazy.

The only thing I'm gonna dislike is when terrible fanlore is attached to characters, and random spoilers get thrown all over the place with zero respect to new players. I'm still thankful I played Undertale before Sans was plastered all over the place.

Undertale just genuinely sucks.

I;ll go super saiyan 4 and stop the personifcation of it. I will make sure no one does this
@lemonov Undertale is the one you single out and not fnaf???

I think sometimes this can actually happen for subtle reasons people don't pick up on. For example FNAF isn't that good but the quantity of releases, mods, and sequels over time can charm people. Minecraft was pretty rudimentary early on, and then redstone dropped and people said 'oh you can code in this game now? nevermind then.' Basically pre-redstone and post-redstone minecraft are legit different, but Minecraft had constant overhaul mods and community integration.

It's much easier to draw and upload a crummy drawing than it is to make a mod, not to defend mean or unstable hater taste too much but as a hater myself I had this sort of happen with Elden Ring. I was really mad at Elden Ring when it first came out because of my specific Faith Build playthrough hitting a wall lategame and a few other things that later patches rebalanced becoming better enough to make up for that rough draft. Communities are also often rough drafts of their later forms and this is something people have to remember.

That said I've seen this sort of defensive opinion around Pizza Tower a lot, actually. I think part of that is people are already gambling their 'GotY' on this which is not a healthy thing to do (like, years dont exist for assessing creative value within)... It's possible its also due to its approximately edgy cartoon manic aesthetic possibly seeming like it'll upset people unfamiliar with it which is obviously unfair to ridicule over. It's a cartoon taken to its extreme, no 'worse' than the Wario games that inspired it.

That all said, I'd caution against using this line too much to defend every game that is popular that you like, because it wears itself out pretty fast and can be overly defensive to constuctive criticism of the text. Which can improve the community surrounding it. Pizza Tower is a visual feast but it's very repetitive for example. Like, there are bad puzzles in Undertale that need to be explained for. Undertale has a lot of awkward overly confrontational humor. These are aspects worth giving serious consideration towards I think. One of the issues Homestuck ran into was that the fandom was too protective of questionable parts of the novel until a runaway effect already happened and the author could Do No Wrong. That author spat on them for it to make a (quite juvenile) point...

So forgive me for bloating your comment chain, but I really hope you and others be considerate in using this line too much. A lot of criticism is of good intention and often in the benefit of finding an even more sick game out there :3

@BlazingWaters oh no don't get me wrong I judge games for myself, I just think I'm waaay out of undertales demographic lol. Don't like those folks much

And also yea I agree with CURSE, I don't like it but you can't deny undertale's importance

Like just to make sure my point hits home here, there's a lot of love of Cruelty Squad but the fandom is in a rudimentary phase that is hard for it to grow out of because there's a lot of focus on catch phrase memeing and not a lot of focus on considering the mechanical relations, (lack of) lighting, and unique Search and Explore function the level design enhances. It's not nessecarily the Cruelty Squad fans faults its still rudimentary, the game has a lot of friction by design but a lack of overt defensiveness against people being 'filtered' or having a poor initial experience with it goes a long way. This is true for any game you want to bond with people over, I think.

Well that's enough from me. Sorry for the intrusion c:

Also Shem the best way to avoid a shit comment section is to follow all the people that responded to this (and your previous reviews) respectfully and lock the comments to friends only. A good or bad comment section tends to boil down to which whether the shitheads or the nicefolk respond to your review first. If you dont wanna do that then block the shitheads and delete their messages. Worlds your oyster on here dear, but yeah usually people have good intentions on here.

I think people definitely will get “oversaturated” with Pizza Tower content and there’ll be more vocal dislike for the game. I think the game definitely has that “staying power” (similar to the games mentioned in the OP post do) to do so. It’s a very iconic game on all fronts.

I do hope people aren’t too protective of this game in such as a fashion Erato mentioned though. The nuance to not immediately antagonize every person who says the game isn’t the Holy Grail should hopefully come from a place where people discuss their opinions on it explicitly.
If that happens I'll be happy to go down with the ship.

undertale is actually good unlike the other two
but yes fair point
hoping this comes to consoles eventually because this game looks epic

I feel like Pizza Tower could get away with not getting that kinda treatment because the whole package is damn good, but the gameplay primarily is incredible. I keep getting the itch to return to this game simply because I enjoy playing it. I can't say that about a lot of other viral games (yes, even Undertale).

I'm also not gonna hold the game up like the holy grail or something, my big critique is that the bosses can devolve into complete chaos, and were generally unfun for a casual player like me. I can't even begin to imagine how much it must hurt to beat any of them without taking damage.

@CNM May as well get it on PC, it's a 300 MB game with extremely low requirements
yeah no thanks hoobla, i dont buy games digitally
