never understood the love this one got outside of jingly keys appeal. yeah it's pretty and sounds nice, but i can't say playing it is very fun half the time. good zones are too short and bad ones never feels like they're going to end

@exsoldier this ties into my central complaint with sonic 3: its pacing is really fucky. you're usually either doing some standard/slowish platforming, or you're being shot through a scripted speed sequence at mach 1 only to be halted again shortly after
hydrocity zone is no exception. getting on the top route isn't hard to do or any real matter of skill. then once you're there it's literally just a back and forth between getting the grabby-hands to throw you into water slides, and waiting for slower moving platforms to get out of your way before doing it again. aquatic ruins in sonic 2 has a much better high/low road system
i vastly prefer sonic 2 in general because its speed feels more earned and based on momentum. its levels are also designed in ways where the enemy/obstacle placement doesn't constantly fuck you over just because you don't have the whole game memorized

also water levels are aesthetically nice but i can't say i enjoy them in platformers most of the time. i do like aquatic ruin in sonic 2 though (mainly because its high route is way better than hydrocity's)
