they really did design one of the best combat systems ever in an action game then put in some of the worst designed levels ive ever seen.

i said stardew valley killed the entire genre of farming games by being so much better than every other farming game ever so theres no real reason to play the rest of them, however this game has funny slimes in it

it's a pretty fun game but that's kind of all you can say positively about it.

character kits are extremely stripped down, placing each and every character into a box of "this character does the same exact thing no matter who picks them" rather than a kit you can develop your own playstyle with. the amount of interesting ways to use your meter has been ripped from the game and as a result, getting any meter has to take a longer amount of time to balance the game out better.

a lot of the charm from older gear titles is ripped from this game too, stuff like the instant kills, the character interactions, etc. is almost completely gone from strive, and the entire game seems like it's aiming for some sort of weird pseudo-serious tone when guilty gear, and as an extension fighting games as a whole, have been and always will be kind of silly games with a lot of stupid shit in them.

singleplayer has never been any fighting games strong-suit but strive offers literally nothing interesting in this department. you have arcade mode and an endless mode, and that's kind of just it.

it's fine if they wanted to allocate those resources elsewhere, but it doesn't seem to have been in the roster considering this game launched with 2 less characters than Xrd did, nor was it spent on the mechanics considering there are less of them than in previous games, nor was it spent on the characters since their movesets have all been stripped down, definitely wasn't on the balance, maybe it was just on the visuals, in which case we're basically saying we made every other aspect of the game suffer just so that the game could look prettier.

i understand strive was supposed to be a new direction, but this new direction just made me wish there was a lot more here. also the airdash in this game was the worst idea ever and it knocks this game down 0.5 stars on its own fuck you

potentiality great game spoiled by the fact its an RPG from the 90s and thus is really hard to get into because absolutely nothing about it tries to be approachable or streamlined.

i obviously didn't finish this game, but after being so harshly confused by everything in this game and having to rollback to older saves after fucking myself to the point of no return multiple times i dont think i can handle any more of this game.

incredible movement, shooting, mechanics, the things doom/quake type games usually get right.

terrible level design (especially in act 2), the thing doom/quake type games usually get wrong.

good game is good. the visuals are great, the sound design is incredible, and although the writing is nothing amazing it's compelling enough to get you through the 20 minute playtime of this game.
