the tribal stuff is awful and the sense of humour stinks like greasy 90s posturing and rank self-congratulation. bombards you with unbearably unfunny pop culture references, plays sexual assault for laughs, and couches all its insipid beerbong edgelord shit in THATS THE WASTELAND BRO because it has no conviction or insight whatsoever that wasn't set up in advance by cain and boyarsky

avellone + friends' worst work by miles and miles. the only thing I like here is My Chrysalis Highwayman which mark morgan probably plagiarized like (allegedly) half the music. everything bad bethesda did to the series' integrity (and worse) started here. this is ground zero and the common (delusional) notion that FO3 was a bolt from the blue tells me the classic fanbase doesn't know shit. Bro??? it's all right here. it's been here since 1998, inside this gross, smelly software that you (allegedly) played. imagine clutching your pearls about a fridge ghoul when FO2 canonized talking deathclaws and tom cruise — even pete hines unwittingly had you boneheads pegged. who the fuck cares about the world building in the knowyourmeme ass family guy rpg?

"this is worse than the time I got beaten at chess by a freaking radscorpion"

Amen. For as much as I hate Bethesda Fallout at least they bother to pretend they're taking it seriously. FO2 is so terminally unserious that even playing it as a teen made me feel uneasy, as an adult it's like a game made from the floor of that one haunted Randy Pitchford image.

@curse unfortunately i played this when i was 13 so i was the ideal age to love it but going back to it now makes me tug on my collar like rodney dangerfield. thankfully i've matured and my favorite game is now Ninja Gaiden Black.

@guttertrash
strongly advise not reading through it like I did

@gruel
haha, I get that. I didn't try FO2 until years and years after playing FO1 (which I have nothing but good things to say about) and bounced off extremely hard by the time I did. I'm thankful it gave us the ability to play FO1 in the updated engine but that's about as much praise as I can afford

"chris avellone's worst work by miles and miles" oh man that's a bold claim considering how prosperous his pedigree has become

Related note, ever since the (alleged?) harrasment cases were lobbied against him a few years ago, I've been thinking about how prevalent that sorta thing was in his writing. PST doesn't seem to have much of it from what I've gleaned and friends have told me, and KOTOR2 (plus however much of his penning was in Fallen Order) utilizes it as a point via "cyclical abuse confronted by theuraputic endeavors", but then you have Alpha Protocol being a power fantasy ass game with there being a literal achievement for shagging all the women. I never noticed that at the time but reading a review about it had me going "oh yea that WAS fuckin weird huh". I don't really agree much with criticisms regarding New Vegas DLCs' thematic thread - especially Lonesome Road - and it does the thing I mentioned prior too, but I do think there's a point to be made about its thesis being 'gendered' onto a Male Courier than a Female one. Felt starkly abrupt compared to the base game team's efforts in making the you... you.

There's like, a bunch of reasons I haven't gotten to this one yet, and I'd be lying if I said if it wasn't cause how often it was pointed to being under the "bigger = better" mentality when the callousness and micro-esque development of civilized land becoming more self-centered and arrogant was the main thing that kept me going in the first game. Guess I'll know for sure at some point.

Its something that always bothered me with this game, combining the still great atmospheric industrial soundtrack from Mark Morgan with South Park-esque writing.

Also good way to put the "allegedly played" in there, still wonder how many people in the fanbase who think the OGs are great (and hey, atleast the first one is awesome) actually played it to the end.

Mark Morgan plagiarizng half the music is an overstatement but he did get a burned CD of SAW II and was told to do something similar to this as a demo of his work. Some of these tracks ended up in the final game

@snak
yeah I was being hyperbolic but it goes well beyond aphex twin. a few instances in particular are virtually uncredited remixes/cover tracks

I've heard variations of the anecdote before about either SAW II or an untitled mix cd that tim cain gave him, and I generally believe that version of things, but then you look back at old quotes he's given on making the OST and it's hard not to think he's at least a little bit of a bullshitter:

"I was given wide latitude with some guidelines but very few restrictions to create what I envision would fit the Fallout world. At the time I was experimenting with a lot of ambient music and the fun aspect of the Fallout score was to blend a kind of odd ethnic, tribal and industrial sound design into something not only musical, but emotional."

Wow holy shit I mostly knew about the SAW II similarities but somehow missed this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9AldyuIh5A

FINALLY. ONE MORE TIME FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK

the worst avellone cawntent is still the new vegas DLC though. some of that stuff is infuriatingly "teenage libertarian" except he was like 35 lol

@sign
one of these days I'll need to replay the nv dlc (usually don't even bother) so I can develop an opinion on them past "old world blues is the borderlands one"
