See That Mountain?

My favorite open worlds, based purely on vibes.

Shadow of the Colossus
Shadow of the Colossus
Big, barren, and dreamy as fuck. There's nothing like the slow-burn tension as you ride Agro through the vast fields as you hone in on your next colossus. No notes.
No More Heroes
No More Heroes
Yeah that's right I'm a sicko Santa Destroy defender.

I genuinely love wandering around this empty, rundown map and visiting what few shops exist and taking in all the vibesbefore taking on the next assassin. Unimpeachable crust.
Deadly Premonition
Deadly Premonition
Does Greenvale count as a hostile open world? Either way I love aimlessly driving around while York goes off the cuff about cult classic movies or whatever.
Elden Ring
Elden Ring
My first time exploring the Lands Between was unlike any other experience I've had with a game. Nearly every nook and cranny leads to something interesting, and the individual regions housed within the sprawling map are all aesthetically unique and engaging. Say what you will about reused bosses/assets, the sense of adventure is more than enough to make up for any shortcomings.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Breath of the Wild as well.

Good traversal makes an open world even better and TotK nails it with the ability to construct sicko dummy vehicles to make your way through Hyrule's hostile lands. It's such a comfy fucking game to explore, even with the foreboding depths.

Although I'd like a return to a more scaled-back, traditional Zelda soon, these two recent entries have absolutely aced everything I love in a good open world. Pure wanderlust.
Dragon's Dogma II
Dragon's Dogma II
Still playing this, but I love that even the act of treading familiar ground can yield new shenanigans and stories. It may not be the most inspired looking fantasy world, but its hostility and penchant for the unexpected makes it one of my favorite worlds to get lost in.
