Good looking visuals combined with extremely dull gameplay.

The Kung Fu was the first title original to the console. It seems it was intended to be a launch game with the Vol. 1 on the box art but it came after Bikkuriman World and Shanghai. I'm guessing when this game was made, the devs were probably like "What can we do to make people show how bad the Famicom is?" try taking one of the more popular early famicom games called Spartan X and try to one up it. Though because of this it falls flat in areas.

I should point out the obvious that yes the sprites are huge and for such an early game it must have wowed some people. I was surprised how many people seem to really appreciate this game graphically. I won't lie it's the most interesting game so far. I'm not sure if the characters are references to stuff. One detail I really like is when you get low health, your character will have blood and damage on his body and face.

The game itself though is not very good. It's a game where you keep walking forward stopping enemies and obstacles. It may seem like a fun idea for the time but because of how big your sprite is, it makes it easy to take a lot of hits. The game also loves to throw a lot of projectiles that you have very little time to react to. This game will rely on a lot of trial and error and while you can get a lot of health as there doesn't seem to be a cap, you'll be struggling a lot. You also don't seem to have continues unless you do a cheat.

The bosses are all just terrible. Now granted I could just be bad at the game but I swear these fights are just so hard, IDK what the heck I'm suppose to do to hit them half the time and I still don't know how I was able to do a move where it did a lot of damage and made the game slow down a lot. Also that US cover is a freaking lie. I swear I kept trying to do jump kicks on bosses and it rarely ever works. Easily the part that brings down the game the most to me. What's worse is due to low memory on the hu-card, the game reuses the player sprite like 3 different times for bosses.

Yeah can't say I was a big fan of this one. It's got some appeal in the presentation even if the music isn't anything great. I just can't really get into the game at all. It's too annoying at times and the bosses were making the experience not fun for me. There were two more loops of the game but I didn't feel like doing them.

A technical showpiece and not much else. Big sprites, yay! Has about as much substance as a shit nugget, though. Least it sweeps the floor with Sword of Sodan.

This is clearly a game that was made to show off the technical capabilities of the TurboGrafx/PC-Engine in regards to how big the sprites could be. Unfortunately they also forgot to make the game playable in any form thanks to having a horrendously slow movement speed and controls that feel unresponsive and dumpy.

Oh and despite the 'BIG SPRITES', the game still manages to look like a total garbled blurry mess. Avoid completely.
