This is, hands down, to this day, the best game in the entire series. While the story is laughably cheesy and the progression of the game could get easily repetitive, this game single-handedly has the best gameplay in the entire series. Cars control beautifully, racing is fun, and the cop chases are unmatched by ANY game to this day. A lot of this is nostalgia talking, sure, but even when I replay this game in the modern day, even after speedrunning it so many times - I play this game with a smile on my face. This game is amazing and definitely worth a play.
My first "Need For Speed" i played when it first came out on the Ps2. Climbing up the blacklist while doing some decent races and challenges is very satisfying. The choice of songs also granted this an extra half a star as I proceeded to wack it up higher than the main volume. Only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because I felt like the main races just weren't very challenging in contrast to how difficult some of the bounty missions are to complete. Still probably the most top tier need for speed game to this day change my mind.
I didn't play this when it was all the hype, but even after all these years it holds up really well.
The driving feels great and the progression is well done. A big plus for me was that you didn't have to complete all the events per rival to advance the story.
Seems like they pretty much addressed all the issues that Underground 1 & 2 had.
I ended up playing this like Midnight Club 2 where I just used the cars I'd won through pink slips. Lots of fun and I can see why it gets so much praise.

Need for Speed Retrospective #9
This game needs to be in the same conversation as Okami and The Wind Waker when it comes to timeless styles. I found myself just roaming around and admiring the view many times, which is quite the compliment for a game old enough to have a drivers license of its own.
Though not as explorable as in Underground 2, the open world is still dense and fun to traverse with plenty to do in each chapter. The game's structure is an interesting choice, its obvious weakness being its repetitiveness. After the first thirty minutes, the remaining 14 chapters become very predictable and can sometimes feel like a slog. Adding to that, the later police chases are very unforgiving and frustrating, as small mistakes will lose you a lot of progress.
Still, a fantastic driving game. You guys were right all along: This is the golden era of NfS.

This game takes everything great about the previous NFS and raises up a notch by adding fun and challenge cops. The story is cheesy but interesting enough for a racing game and the concept of giving a great car at the start of the game and than taking it away is genious. Even if the controls and hit boxes are a little dated it is a must play racing game.
