Mega Man on the Game Boy usually recycled ideas and enemies from the NES games but this game created a new story with unique characters and upgrades that make it stand out among the other portable Mega Man games. The story is cool and inventive, the new ability is fun and distinct, and overall this is a solid Mega Man game. Its value doesn't just lie in its portability, instead, this game is up there with some of the best entries in the series.

The only Rockman World game with an original cast of Robot Masters, and they're all really fun, neat ideas that aren't shackled by the robots needing to be things. The Mega Arm is neat, and I'll always stan Tango. Lovely game and a great Mega Man title, handheld or not.

By far the best of the Game Boy MM titles, helped by the fact it is the only release that wasn't a port.

It's graphically an impressive-looking title for the GB, though in true MM fashion the game's performance tanks with multiple enemies on the screen. Honestly, I would have no issue with a remake in colour.

very interesting step in a new direction tbh. i really enjoyed the non remixed robot masters/stages and the story was nice too. the levels definitely felt like they repeated themselves however. i felt like rooms were used multiple times per level, sometimes without even new enemy placement.

Review in progress:
Good platformer for the Game Boy, but not anything special out of that context.

Has the most emotional and thought-provoking ending you could put on a Game Boy. It kills me to think that most people don't even know this game exists, it deserves to be recognized as one of the greatest Mega Man games period.

This built off IV so well! Unlike the previous 4 this time the "Robot Master" equivalent bosses were completely original. I loved that the main blaster could be upgraded. And the returning bosses from I-IV were a nice touch as a send off to the GB series.

This game is weird. It's good, the best Game Boy Mega Man. The biggest problems being it's on the Game Boy so its got weird lag and slowdown, and also it feels very sink or swim in some sections of the level design being on a small screen but...shit this game is good. Like NES quality good.

I always found it weird the Game Boy games had mechanics like cutscenes and the shop that the NES games never quite had, but this Mega Man V is the first time a GB Mega Man game feels like its own thing. On top of that it just feels like a fitting finale for the 80s born era of classic Mega Man as a whole before the franchise. The story is simple as always but it still felt like a fight Mega Man never had before. The bosses losing the -Man suffix and their designs make them feel more alien, and the final stage itself was a fun gauntlet for once.

I can't say the same for the entire GB library, and I still kinda wish this game was on the NES but this one is a must play and probably one of the best GB platformers.

I need to play this game again because it's been a while and i like mega man but i like Mars he's so funny.

One of the most well-designed games I've ever played not only as its own game, but as a game that wants to work around the limits of the Game Boy. A lot of its mechanics are built around the screen being smaller and it still feels close enough to the main series for me to not care that it's different.

Playing on the 3DS Virtual Console, collected all items and cleared the game. For future replays, I will play the colorized ROM hack, Mega Man World 5 DX, using mGBA on my modded Wii.

Bad physics are still bad, but I like the levels and weapons

Probably will never play this one again but I had fun

This game is SHOCKINGLY good. Like. Too 5 Mega Man game. BARELY misses my Top 50 ever. This was phenomenal, but really, REALLY easy. Interesting lore.

Slept on this game for far too long. It's surprisingly competent for a Game boy game. The Sunstar fight is better than most mainline games' final bosses. A few issues make me not want to replay this one. The endgame was very stupidly structured and, due to hardware limitations, slowdown lurks around every corner.

This here is, definitely, at least four things:
• One of the best platformers for the original Game Boy;
• One of the best and most graphically detailed Game Boy games;
• The best, most well built Mega Man game for the Game Boy;
• One of the absolute best Mega Man games in the classic formula.

Mega Man IV was fantastic, but this one knocked it out of the park. Unlike the previous Mega Man titles for the Game Boy (known in Japan as the “Rockman World” series), this one is completely original and do not reuse bosses and stage themes from the NES originals. The stages are marvellously designed end encourage exploration, enemy variety is abundant and the gameplay is extremely solid.

This is arguably the most well-balanced game in the series, with the Mega Arm being a much more fair weapon than the Mega Buster, which usually destroys most enemies and disencourages the use of the bosses’ weapons. Well, in this game they’re mostly situational, but some of them are really neat and helpful against a variety of enemies. I also wouldn’t go as far as to say that the bosses are too easy, but instead I’d say they are beautifully executed to provide fair fights regardless of your particular strategy.

On top of all that, the game simply oozes charm and personality, and that by itself makes a huge impact on my final rating. I had this on my 3DS for years, only waiting to be finally played, and I’m glad I went through all of the previous four games before beating this, which is definitely the high point of this series, even if still liked Mega Man IV more. Juuust slightly, though.

I have to say, though, that this game simply deserves to be played in full colour, which makes the original graphic even better. On Christmas 2022, a romhack by the title of “Mega Man World 5 DX” was released, and it’s not only a complete overhaul of the game’s graphics by giving them full colour (and, honestly, turning a black and white game into one of the most colourful Mega Man titles in a faithful way), but it also removes the slowdown that plagued the original version so much. If the new colouring isn’t enough for you, I’m sure this second aspect of it makes it the definitive way to play this game.

For one of the best Mega Man games and one of the best titles in the Game Boy library, do yourself a favour and play it, especially with the new enhanced, definitive version. I highly doubt you’ll be disappointed by the end of it.

As much as I love MMIV, this one comes pretty close to being my fav Game Boy MM game. Capcom and Minakuchi decided to shake things up by not reusing Robot Masters from previous games as well as giving Mega Man new abilities (Mega Arm and Tango), and it all pays off. Shame we never got a GBC version along with the other Game Boy games

If I were to fit this game in with the rest of the classic trilogy, it’d be in the top 3 beside 11 and 9.

And why does a Game Boy game have one of the most raw final boss fights of all time?

This one is really good. Probably the best of the Gameboy Mega Mans. IV and V are really good, but I think V is very slightly better. I love the theming on everything. The celestial theme and the Mega Arm really make this one stick out against all the other Mega Mans in my mind. I think Tango is dumb though. I like all the weapons, though I did think the block picking up one was pretty useless, same with the dash due to the lack of screen real estate. The bosses were super fun. I really like the Mega Punch, I think its fun to use and it makes me use the other weapons more since its not as spammable as the charge shot. The music is great and the stages all look great too. The game just has a nice flow to it. I think it falls off a bit in the final act. I did not like the space shooter section with rush. The boss rush with the Mega Man Killers was a nice novelty, but it all being in one level kind of sucks. I really love the final boss though. The fact that most of the weapons, aside from Tango, the dash, and the block picker upper, were useful made it a lot of fun to navigate through the levels. The levels never felt like they overstayed their welcome, and aside from a few moments where they just drop you in a pit and expect you to dodge spikes, felt extremely fair. They're challenging and just fun. I felt great while playing this one. I'm glad I gave the Gameboy games a shot. This, IV, and the first one to an extent, made it worth it.

Why are the game boy games so fucking good

Okay so this is a weird case, Megaman 1-4 on gameboy are watered down versions of the NES games, but this fifth game is actually completely original, so I wanted to look at it. And colour me surprised, this game is a hidden gem!

They put so much effort in this and it’s ahead of it’s time, considering it included features that wouldn’t show up in the console games for years, such a shop to buy upgrades and a more elaborate story. It’s still simple, but there’s actually dialogue between characters and the setting of travelling the solar system creates a memorable experience. It is all in black and white, but the detail is no less apparent, i really like how this game looks, smaller screen aside.

The game is classic Megaman, you run, shoot and use special weapons which are.. okay, not the best selection but a few stand out with some unique properties, like a gun that can heal you if you catch the ejected bullet.

The levels are fun, and I only noticed a Few cases of overly punishing level design. The bosses are great and overall I think the challenge level is spot on.

While Megaman V may just be more of the same, I think it’s one of the better classic games, and really should been included in the legacy collection. While not mind blowing, this is how you do a gameboy version right - 7.5/10

This one is actually really cool! Along with making a wholly original cast of "robot masters" the overall levels feel like they've really learned from the previous entries. A decently fun time and even better than some of the normal classic series.

Wily has a Death Star in this game.

Sadly, the Death Star stage isn't actually that great. Seemed to be a lot of copy and paste. The bosses in the Death Star were great though.
Other than that, the game itself can get a bit laggy at times which sometimes ate my inputs.
The stages were great. It might even be the best set of stages quality-wise of all the classic Mega Man games.
The space setting was superb in my opinion and the planet-themed bosses were pretty good as well. Their powers were good and sufficiently distinct from each other, although I barely used any of them, except against the bosses.
And finally a yellow devil that isn't nigh on impossible to dodge!
My favorite classic Mega Man that I have played thus far.

out of all the gb games
just play this one and leave the other 4 alone they are not worth it in comparison

-Megaman, why are you helping me?
-Because we are both robots.

I played the Mega Man World V DX fan hack. Minakuchi puts on an absolute clinic in how to make a great Mega Man game. The formula that we know and love remains intact here, but it’s been refined to a science and the level design is often more original than Capcom themselves tend to be. There’s so much personality in Mega Man V’s memorable new enemies, its fun platforming challenges, and its spacey, high-tempo music. Interestingly, there are no Robot Masters, and, for the first time in the mainline series, Dr. Wily isn’t the final boss! Instead, Minakuchi puts forth 8 new “Stardroids,” all of whom are based on planets and have very good designs. A couple of the Stardroid weapons are essentially the same as ones in prior games, but most of them are as good as we’ve ever gotten in any other game. This is one of the best titles on the Game Boy. Outstanding.

Really cool game. Even from the start of the game the super arm felt original and yet familiar. Its upgrades felt worth buying. The boss weapons were ok, but they were outclassed by the super arm. The bosses themselves felt unique and memorable and I loved the fact that I faced a new final boss.
Overall a pretty good game and, most impressive, on the game boy handheld console.

On the one hand, this is a great and well designed Mega Man game. Arguably the best on the Game Boy (I'd say it's a toss up between this and IV). This is the first one that doesn't just feel like "Mega Man but small" and actually feels like it a Mega Man game that happens to be on Game Boy (if that makes sense).

On the other hand (possibly because I've marathoned the other GB Mega Man games while sick at home with COVID), this one just did not vibe with me at all. It's a great game, and I made it through all the bosses and to the final levels, but I just was not feeling it at any point.
