This was such a fun and unique metroidvania. Very stylish and original.
I think this kind of game would also work with other mythologies.

Platinum. A very fun time with a great art style and interesting boss battles. Lots of crashing near the end did make this one a bit of a pain to complete.

Apotheon is truly a stunning game.

I, like many people, was drawn by the art style of the game, but I quickly fell in love with many of the other aspects of the game. The level design is absolutely phenomenal. Each god's domain feels completely different - I entered each level with anticipation at what type of challenges awaited me. The levels all felt very immersive as well, the maps are dotted with passages referencing classics such as The Illiad and it's very clear that the developers spent a lot of time doing research on Greek mythology to ensure that the game was very accurate to the source material.

I was also impressed with the voice acting, especially Hera's. I play a lot of PC games on mute, but I really enjoyed listening to the different conversations occurring in the overworld and the speeches that the gods would make during their levels. It adds so much to what is already an immersive experience.

The combat system is a hit-or-miss (no pun intended), but I enjoyed it. It feels like a spiritual successor to combat in Adventure of Link, except it feels much more complex as you can utilize many different types of weapons in the game. It was really cool experimenting with different weapons throughout the game until I developed my own playstyle and figured out which weapons worked best for me.

Overall, I highly recommend this game to anyone. It's a relatively short game but definitely a fun experience.

Apotheon is pretty good and juicy, shame I can't get into the genre.

If you're a metroidvania fan you should give it a chance!

God of War but in 2 dimensions on a greek vase. Very good game.

The artstyle carries it honestly, as a game it was really meh. I don't care about continuing it.

Apotheon is novel. Having a game that looks like old greek vase painting is just a super neat thing. You got ample boobs and peepees on display throughout the game and all the dudes have STACKED ASSES. During the action, arms and legs all rotate on their hinges so they conform to the constant side perspective. It's quite effective at pulling off that aesthetic. The actually gameplay is a bit more frustrating and dull after a while. All the combat interactions are frustratingly physics-y. The weapons do set amounts of damage, but getting a hit with a melee weapon involves swinging your right thumbstick in a way that never feels impactful. I'm sure some people have fun messing around with that, but in my experience swinging my swords and throwing firebombs always felt super inexact. And it's not helped by the fact a majority of the enemies seemed to have no issue dodging most weapons I threw and moved around as if possessed by Sonic the Hedgehog. I would give Alientrap credit for at least diversifying their boss battles. I never knew what was going to happen once I found my next boss encounter between scenarios like a battle during a horse race, one where you and the opponent take turns hunting each other, or an obstacle course with trick shots. Cool look, boring story, gameplay that has its moments.

Free PS+ game where I maimed an entire colony then dropped it.

All i remember is that Jerma voices a character.

Played while in Italy. So much of the Greek theme is great. The entire game looks essentially like a traditional greek painting. The weapon variety is also very cool. However, the Metroidvania elements can be slightly poor and need a guide. Also, much of the combat is very janky where anyone can win or die in one hit.

Doesn't live up to its potential. Good sound effects.

Que asco la pelea final, pero estuvo bueno aunque el combate es meh

Fantastic and fun mythological metroidvania. The game is crushingly difficult at times, but otherwise fair and fun.

Stylish metroidvania with a fun setting and enjoyable combat, though it really struggles to stand out amongst the others in the genre.

There's precious little to critique about this 2D action platformer; the action is varied (weapon-wise, at least) and visceral, the art stylized in a fine Grecian style that manages to stay fresh between areas, and the story classical and well-paced. If I had complain about anything, I'd wish that the combat was perhaps a bit more forgiving, but given that I was never in danger of running out of money for repairs and supplies, I guess I can't complain too much.

THE GODS OF OLYMPUS HAVE ABADONED ME.

Beautiful game, I don't think it's mind-blowing in actual gameplay but it shakes things up often enough to be pretty fun the whole way through once you get used to the janky combat. It does a great job at actually feeling like a true myth rather than a modern story, which I think works in its favor.

pretty fucked up that they couldn’t make the greek metroidvania engaging

This Metroidvania title was most memorable for its visual style, which takes ancient artwork and makes a whole game out of it. The gameplay, while ocassionally rough around the edges, is pretty fun and I made it all the way to credits. It captures the mythology interestingly enough.

eu lembro que eu terminei isso e nao lembro de nada que aconteceu enquanto eu tava jogando

I vaguely remember playing this game, it clearly wasn't great. Meh.

It took me a few tries to get into this game for some reason but once I did, I couldn't put it down. I'm usually not a fan of 2D side scrollers but the style of this one is irresistible. The story does seem a little too God of War-ish with the premise of killing evil Greek gods one by one, but it's a premise that works. Highly recommend.

A bit out of my wheelhouse in terms of genre/content but I gave this a go due to the interesting aesthetics.

The most appealing part of the game for me was the map exploration and the side quests. There's a lot of fetch questy type things but I enjoyed visiting areas and unlocking new pathways and the like. At least when I wasn't getting mobbed by enemies every five seconds.

It was the enemies and combat where things became more problematic, which is too bad since there's so much of it. There's a nice weightiness to things but in terms of actual movement it feels like there's no rhyme or reason to what's happening. Doing a stab, overhead swing, or other attack felt completely up in the air and at times calling for precision that wasn't a good time. Trying to outmaneuver bosses by doing a faster jab attack but instead doing a slow arching swing resulting in a miss or taking damage got old early in and never improved. Add in various glitches such as getting (you or enemies) knocked through the wall/ceiling into inaccessible areas and getting trapped, set pieces not working, treasure chests getting trapped in stage geometry, and it was an unfortunately rough experience.

I'd love to see this or something similar to it with more polish. There's a solid framework but as it is, it wasn't there for me.
