A bit rough around the edges in terms of gameplay and rather underwhelming graphics, but the story, character writing and design, as well as music are top-notch.

I threw a prinny once and i had to solo with Etna afterwards

One of the most fun games I've ever played in my life!! the gameplay and level mechanics are very addictive, its characters and stories are extremely interesting and cool, a very tasty farm that gives me many hours of fun

Came for the gameplay, stayed for the writing (and the gameplay). It’s a fun game, in more ways than you’d think. I fucked with the post-game too for a little bit, and that was pretty cool too. Sometimes you just really wanna see da big number go up. I would recommend if you’re a fan of SRPGs.

Subsequent games improved on a lot:
The problem with Disgaea 1 is that it felt too much like a foundational framework to build upon. Story maps leave a lot to be desired, either revolving around tedious geo-symbol gimmicks (like scaleX3, silence, invincibility, and no-lifting), or nothing at all. Often stretched out into open areas where enemy placement seems to have been an afterthought. Additionally, chapter-ending bosses tended to be up-scaled enemies or just another encounter with Vyers. There are difficult spikes begging you to grind, but the item world, being as rudimentary as it is, wasn't a satisfying alternative. Here, the enemies are just as strong as they are in the story maps, limiting your ability to clear floors. Worst of all, skill positioning is severely limited, making mages my most used class by far.

The story is mid(boss):
The story started off promising, and I can say I enjoyed the banter between Laharl and Etna most of all. But the sheer naivete of Flonna really got on my nerves. Mid-Boss, with his fake-Dracula accent, wasn't much better and really overstayed his welcome. Around half-way into the story, it starts revolving around the Defenders of Earth, whom I was hoping would only take up a single chapter; I really started to lose all interest from there.

Sleeper agent type game. I'll be thinking to myself "man, I've really not had any motivation to play games lately huh" while simultaneously putting like 20 something hours in this, none the wiser.

I have never been more polarized from a game I definitely enjoyed. This game is niche and niche for a reason. It's very obvious. It's grindy, absurdly complicated to the point of me learning new mechanics in the final fucking boss, and it has some stupid difficulty spikes. At the same time, however, there's so much customizability that no two players will beat the game with the same team, the mechanics makes the gameplay much richer, it's extremely satisfying to finish a tough stage, and while they are quite over-the-top, the characters do actually get some good development.
I overall definitely enjoyed my time with this one.

Disgaea 1 honestly has a great wee story and a fun cast of characters, which in terms of the story, i didnt really recall as being as effective as it was in the context of a series that most people probably assume purely plays it self for a laugh, suffice to say, good game

About 20 hours into my first playthrough of this, I had a very clear moment where I realized "oh yeah I haven't ever liked any game as much as this." It's still one of my favorite games of all time, even if the rest of the series has kinda outpaced it mechanically.
