My friend Elias carried me through this whole game

Super difficult but rewarding game, I don't know if I ever would've finished it back when I was like 6 without the internet to help me

This review contains spoilers

Better than bad, it's good.

Sorry, but SNES OST >>>>>>>>>>> GBA OST

Donkey Kong Country 3 has always been... the oddball of the trilogy, and somehow, this version intensifies that.

I'll start by talking about the most obvious thing, the fact that they changed the original soundtrack, because it couldn't be ported to the GBA (even though the GB could...). Anyway, because of this, David Wise himself composed a replacement for the game's songs, a new soundtrack by the original composer of DKC1 and DKC2, the concept sounds fantastic, doesn't it...? but the truth is that almost none of the songs (even though I like them a lot) fit the game... to mention some examples, there's a level where a giant saw is chasing you and you have to climb a big tree to avoid it, the original DKC3 had a mystery song, which transformed to tension in that specific level... here is this song... Another example, there's a level where you have to get to the goal as soon as possible because you are chased by an enemy, the song in question makes you feel in danger... while the replacement is a beautiful song that I love, more because the song changes depending on whether you are on land or submerged in water, but it leaves me confused on how I should feel, although since it also replaces another song, it also makes me see it as an excellent replacement. There are some other examples of songs that don't fit at all, like the final boss, which went from having an exclusive theme to having the common boss theme, I didn't like that at all.

All in all there are some occasions where I prefer the new song. To make it shorter, here is a list where I summarize when I prefer the GBA soundtrack:
- Waterfall Level
- Wooden houses level
- Pipeline level
- Forest and lake level (mentioned above)
- Water level

As a final comment about the music, I like it a lot, it's superior to the original, it really shows that the GBA can have compositions that sound this good, I just don't think it fits the game, I would have preferred that all these songs would have been put in a hypothetical DKC4 or something like that. In a way also these songs are the precedent for many of the songs in Tropical Frezze.

Speaking of the graphics, this time Rare finally found the perfect spot between making the colors not look too pale, but at the same time making them reasonable for the GBA screen. Coupled with the fact that this is the best looking game of the trilogy, makes this GBA version possibly the best looking game on the GBA... well, only in the levels, as the overworld map was redone for a very low quality one in comparison, which just looks bad next to how the levels look, and all the backgrounds of the bear houses or kongs also look just as bad. This was a problem in previous ports, but for some reason here it's more noticeable.

Moving on to other things I don't like, is how the mobility of the Kongs feels in this game, it doesn't feel the same as DKC1 and DKC2 for GBA since it's slower, but it doesn't feel like the original SNES version either, it feels bad to play in my opinion.

And finally, in general, it feels like a port that doesn't have the same care that the previous ones had. There's no screen to tell you the completion status of the levels, there's no new collectibles for the levels, the new mini-games are of lower quality... there's no addition that tries to be an improvement to the original game. The only new thing is a new world with several new levels, and I won't deny it, I enjoyed it a lot, but it's the only addition and I don't think it's worth playing this version just to see those new levels.

Conclusion
At the end of the day, I don't see any reason to prefer this version over the original, yeah, Rare had a better understanding of the hardware they were working on making the music sound amazing and the graphics have the colors they should have and not super pale, but you can tell that what they didn't understand was the original Donkey Kong Country 3. I really enjoyed it, but I doubt I will ever play this version again in the future.

This one is the best of the GBA ports. It looks the best and is the most similar to the original SNES version in both looks/color and gameplay.

The new soundtrack is pretty good but doesn't match some of the level set pieces (the happy forest music should not be playing when you're being chased by a giant saw lmao)

The new bonus world is pretty solid too. I'll never complain about getting more DKC content.

Esse foi um dos poucos games que tinha para GBA na época, mas foi bem divertido de jogar por horas.

I love Donkey Kong Country 3 but this is not my ideal version

While I got the game soon after the first two, I never really got into this one as a kid and only went back to beat it much, much later. It tries new things like a more involved overworld map, but the levels just seem less inspired and the formula wearing a bit thin. Kiddy Kong also kind of sucks and I just wanted Diddy back in my party instead.

This port adds the most of any of the GBA DKC ports, however the content added is pretty mediocre, so I wouldn't recommend it. Most notable would be the extra world added, Pacifica. While 6 or 7 extra levels sound good on paper, they're basically among the worst in the franchise. Bland at best. There's also the new soundtrack which, while it does have a few bangers, has too many horrible tracks and can't hope to match the original. This version is a bit too mangled.

Probably best level design in the series but not the best physics. Vastly Improved music over SNES version

The GBA version adds a whole new world and has a new(and improved) soundtrack by David Wise

Pros: I feel like they put more effort into this GBA port than they did the previous two. For one, the palette finally isn't all washed out, yeah, the sprites are still smudged to fit the smaller resolution, but the colors aren't bad! This game did come out late into the GBA's life, after the DS already released even, so by then we had plenty of backlit systems to play on, and they were finally able to design one of these with that in mind. For two, this game has an entirely new soundtrack that fits the GBA's soundcard, and you know what, a lot of the tunes are pretty damned good, with everything being composed by the legendary composer of DKC1 and 2, David Wise. And thirdly, we got an entirely brand new world in this version of the game, Pacifica. And in this world, we have some neat new stages, like a legit barrel cannon stage (something DKC3 SNES lacked), an underwater redwood tree, a tough as nails coral stage with strong currents pushin you around, a stormy deck stage, a new Brother Bear with Bachelor Bear, and even a new boss (the new boss sucks, but hey, a new boss!). I guess fourthly, we got a bunch of new minigames, as one would expect out of these GBA renditions by now. The Funky's Rentals minigames has you racing in boats, or doing other boat activities, and it's actually decent! The minigame is entirely based on Rare's old "Cobra Triangle" game from NES, so that's probably why it plays so well. But hey, finally a minigame in one of these things that feels good to play.

Cons: as much an improvement over the previous GBA DKC ports, it's still not better than the SNES counterparts. It's still a bit patched together in its presentation, doesn't' feel smooth, doesn't look smooth, heck, despite the great new compositions, the sound editing and direction is still unpolished. And in general, the gameplay of the SNES original simply feels better, but hey, at least the new additions and changes feel worth another go for once, despite just being a portable version.

What it means to me: DKC3 was always the blacksheep of the franchise, but I still loved it. So I was glad that they went the extra mile for this GBA port. And that soundtrack, my god, it's actually an OST that I would listen to separately from playing the game. This game showed that David Wise still had it, and it had me dreaming of him returning to the DK franchise once again one day...

literally the bestest game ever made. so amazing and perfect

[GBA Version] Well, it isn't hard to see why that is the one that nobody ever plays or thinks about. It had a lot of new ideas for making unique levels, but so many of them were annoying (reversing controls, timed lightning strikes) and all of the bosses were the worst of the series. The new animal friends aren't very fun either. It WAS good, just not as good as what came before, or after.

i want to kick baby kong's soft spot in

This was fun liked it just as much as the original! The Wise compositions were great and Pacifica was a neat bonus! Loved the neat QoL features as well with the speed.

Adds more levels, collectables and such... The levels feel less entertaining than in the previous title and a bit less challenging . Still a great game though.

Has a better OST than the original, only reason I'm ranking it.

half a star lower than the original because i have bad memories of doing the extra minigames.

also soundtrack for this one is good. SNES one was also good. fight me, david wise and eveline fischer had their own vibes with their respective soundtracks and both are good.

i can't help but love it, but it really is the worst in the trilogy.
