honestly i swear this controls much worse than the nes version. Played both back to back and i was flying thru the nes version but could barely even get past the first stage in this. i'm sure it's fun for score attack and such if you can master it but i just wasn't clicking with it as well as I did with the nes release. See my review on that version for thoughts on the gameplay.
P.S. the sound design was really annoying in this version, just wanted the birds to shut up... though I do appreciate it trying to be atmospheric.

It was on my backlog as the oldest game I haven’t played yet, and I continue to be filtered by games too primitive to account for concepts like “actually fall damage sucks ass.” Or too hungry for your theoretical quarters.
It’s a shame because I do like the concept on display here. The hero of the original game is now the villain… and you’re playing as Donkey Kong’s son and trying to save him! You get to be on both sides of the endless conflict between man and ape…! I know the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games play around with this more but I do kind of wish Mario’s weird gadgeteer side got to be more of a thing. I think the man should sic wind-up crocodiles on some Goombas.

I think it's as good as the original and enjoyed the variation on the gameplay here. Junior definitely feels lethargic, but it adds to the sense of danger because most of the enemies are more nimble than you are. It's over quickly, but just like the first game, every level has a unique theme to it and all of them are enjoyable.
For those who don’t follow the Donkey Kong lore, this is Donkey Kong 2.
This game is somewhat worse and better than the first one, I really like the new gameplay but at the same time I hate it because it’s really slow and frustrating. I honestly even have trouble going past the first stage because the jump feels so clunky, climbing is slow and boring and it just bores me!
This game would be a lot more fun if junior were much faster.
Overall a neat quality Arcade game for 1982, but playing it now just isn’t particularly fun.

Donkey Kong Jr is once again a competent enjoyable Arcade game, following Mario trapping Donkey Kong, which leads to his son to go rescue him. DKJR is all honesty more of the same 4 stages and a slight boss fight at the end, Jr is slightly more nimble than Mario and there’s a bigger emphasis on climbing and elevation, thanks to more vines and pushing objects down but other than that, that’s it? It’s not a particularly bad game but it feels like after the success they didn’t know what to do with the series and instead just made more Donkey Kong stuff without doing anything more unique.

The anti Donkey Kong the game where it’s about climbing instead of jumping. It’s really interesting to see that the hero in last game is the villain in this one. Anyways this game is not as good as the original in my opinion since the climbing can be slighty janky also don’t like how you have to keep track of going up and down by holding on one or two vines. I do like that the levels have more color then the original with some nice greens. Anyways ranking levels vines>chains>hideout>jumpboard
That feeling when your absent dad who went to the store to pick up bananas 4 years ago was actually just kidnapped by a tubby Italian Plumber/Carpenter/Doctor/Construction Worker/Demolition Worker/Brewery Worker/Referee/Golfer/Tennis Player/Basketball Player/Baseball Player/Football Player/Marine Biologist/Archaeologist/Chef/Soldier/Pilot/Ball for a Pinball Table, who just so happens to be an Animal Trainer on the side.
It's just one of those days (he didn't even get the bananas 😢)
