It's remarkable how well this holds up given it's the first in an entire sub-series and they've barely changed it in the 30 years since this game. It's a solid little roguelike with a charming protag, catchy music and an approachable and easily understood progression and mechanics that would only get more refined in the myriad sequels.

Holds up surprisingly well for the very first entry in an entirely new series (and genre?) of games. The gameplay is smooth, I love the constant upgrading of your shop as you bring back more money, and the difficulty is very well balanced.

My only real gripe with it is that you have to backtrack out of the dungeon when you find the treasure. It's really not that fun to retread your steps when you've already become so powerful that most enemies on the floors you passed don't really have much of a chance to kill you.

cute, concise, and enjoyable roguelike. not too difficult, doesn't take too long to beat, and its systems are simple but sweet.

It is some goddam-ass bullshit that there aren't any scrolls of town portal

Not really fun. Didn't like the gameplay loop since it takes a lot of time to make a dent of progress. The items in the dungeon are so random that you'll go 20 floors with no weapon or shield. Only positive I have is the enemy sprites are great.

i'd played this a bit at some point, but only now have i actually beaten it. it's fascinating to me that such an early roguelike, having spun off from the dragon quest series, was actually a bit more akin to rogue itself than many other games called roguelikes: i'm told that its main objective of retrieving an item from the depths of the dungeon and then working your way back up—without the aid of an outside scroll to warp you back to the dungeon entrance—is a direct parallel.

i had an absolute blast finally digging into the first mystery dungeon title over the last week, and in all honesty i'm a bit jealous of japan's timeline alternate to north america's, where this was a big hit and a beloved game, and one which spawned a whole string of successors made by chunsoft. an absolutely rock-solid first take on the concept, even though further iterations would refine and expand on it. i've played a few—shiren 2 for the n64 is probably my current favorite, though i'm excited to jump into torneko's ps1 sequel next.

Navigating "Taloon's" (fan translation for the win) beautiful self down the dungeon to gather treasures is great. It's a full-game expansion of his chapter from Dragon Quest IV. It is thrilling to have a good run and find lots of treasure. The randomness can be joyful or miserable depending on which flavor fate decides for you.

I got to the 26th floor of the Mystery Dungeon, but I either could not find the Happy Box or I was freaked out by too many dragons. Either way, I had a great time but I think I've taken all the Mystery Dungeon punishment I can handle.

Pretty simple all things considered, not very hard compared to other games in the series (let alone PC roguelikes of its era), but it makes it a pretty good game for a beginner to approach. It's surprisingly good, and even better when you've played Dragon Quest IV and know Torneko very well.

This is the first in the long, varied series of Chunsoft’s Mysterious Dungeon (or if you’re a prude, Fushigi no Dungeon) series. All of the games in the series have one thing in common: lots and lots of dungeon crawling. I’ve never actually played Rogue, keep in mind, but it’s hard to imagine this being anything different. You run around in a series of randomly generated dungeons, consisting of lots of rooms connected by small corridors. Randomly generated dungeons at their finest, here! And you fight monsters, and collect all manner of randomly generated treasure, and do it lots and lots of times.

This game involves Taloon (or Torneko, if you played its Playstation sequel, Torneko: The Last Hope (or the nonexistent English-language Dragon Warrior IV for Playstation)) leaving his home of Endor in search of fantastic treasures and whatnot. He eventually reaches the Mysterious Dungeon, and decides to poke around for a bit. And there you have it.

The Rogue to Shiren's Nethack. Light on features and metaprogression, but more approachable for it. All the essentials of the franchise are here.

i respect it for being the first of its kind but at the same time i feel ive been spoiled by other mystery dungeon type games and all theyve done better

If you’ve ever enjoyed one of those roguelikes more directly inspired by Rogue than by newer games in the genre, you will probably enjoy this. It’s like one of those games except it has Dragon Quest characters and writing (so better). Incredibly solid.

小さい頃はまだ遊びきれなかったけど、少し成長してわかるようになったらこんな面白いゲームなかなかないぞって思うやつですね。この市場にダンジョンローグを持ってきたという意義深い一本。
