Who didn't play this on their pentium 3 family computer back in 2001?

played through this twice, first the vanilla version and then the RealRTCW upgrade that's available on Steam and I definitely had way more fun with the latter. no more bullet-sponge enemies, more enemy variety and more weapon variety as well. I'd honestly just recommend that for new players.

the game itself was kinda average. the first third is really good. escaping the castle, going through the village and then the crypts. excellent pacing and atmosphere but it just dips and plateaus in quality after that. the stealth is incredibly awkward, the bosses are ass and the ending is underwhelming. still had more fun than I was expecting though.

Oh, I remember playing that with my childhood friend. Of course, the game was banned in Germany, but somehow he had got his hands on a version :D We were always very careful when we played it so that nobody would come into the room and discover a swastika or something :D It wasn't until many years later that I played it myself. I absolutely loved the game, the story is super over-the-top, the gameplay is challenging but fair and the whole aesthetic of the game is just unique. I'm looking forward to playing it again.

Oynarken çoğu zaman Medal of Honor oynuyormuş hissine kapıldım.

I'll never forget the sheer terror that washed over me as I stepped foot into that tomb and came face to face with the undead...

Old School FPS diyorum başka bir şey demiyorum. İnternette kısa bir araştırma yapıp güncel grafik modları indirirseniz günümüz oyunlarını aratmayacak bir oyun oluyor. İstediğin zaman aç, oyna.

Great game with excellent multiplayer.

The long awaited follow up of Wolfenstein 3D did not disappoint. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was a great game with some amazing visuals at the time. It is fast paced, hard as ever, and a worthy installment.

In Return to castle Wolfenstein, the German SS “Paranormal” Division tries to dig up an ancient curse in Egypt to create an army of zombies to fill the ranks of the nazi’s (classic Wolfenstein). They eventually dig up an “Dark Night”, and with him, the curse they were trying to release and control. This goes wrong of course, and the land is terrorized by zombies, demons and spirits.

The leader of the Paranormal Division is General Deathshead and you learn of his plans and whereabouts later in the game. You fight your way through a nazi research factory and discover some gruesome experiments from Deathshead. You eventually find the man himself, but he escapes via a U-boat. You track him down again, but this time, he throws one of his newest creations at you, the Über Soldat. You fight this abomination, only to see Deathshead flee in a Kobra rocket plane, disappearing for the rest of the game.

You eventually uncover the full plans of the Paranormal SS Division, which consists of resurrecting Heinrich I, a powerful Saxon Warlock King (it keeps getting better and better) from 943 AD. You make your way to the excavation site near Castle Wolfenstein while fighting off hordes of nazi’s, demons and even more Über Soldaten. You blast your way through the site and ruins and eventually fight Heinrich I himself. After killing him, Heinrich Himler disappears in the distance, confirming that you officially screwed up every plan the Germans had for this project and that he needs to face the wrath of the Fuhrer himself. Glorious.

The introduction of Stealth in this game was a little unnecessary in my opinion. Especially since there are some missions that require it to even progress. I did not think that it added much to the game and it sometimes slowed the game to a halt.

The visuals are stunning in Return to Castle Wolfenstein. This game is from 2001/2002, but can be considered next gen for its time. Explosions, animations and gun impact look really good and I can only praise it.

In terms of sound, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is also a fine piece of work. Gunfire sounds excellent and the sounds and rattles that enemies make, really enhance the experience. Nothing to complain here.

Movement and controls are fluent, and like I said, make the game fast paced. In the multiplayer mode, this showed even better, making for a good online experience.

The only thing I found a little annoying about this game, is the sudden difficulty spike with the introduction of those weird UFO human hybrid abominations. These things shoot lightning, almost insta killing you and have a ton of health. Maybe I just need to git gut, but these bastards killed some of the fun I had with the game.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed Return to Castle Wolfenstein and I am amazed how well this game holds up today in terms of graphics and gameplay.

Definitely recommend this beauty.

There's a small sliver of time where shooters did something transcendental. From Aliens Versus Predator 2, to the mainline 007 entries. There's a magic to them that is hard to capture, and this was one of the best.

Well its been a bit since I did a review, lets get back on track, shall we?

Bit of background, I initially played this game when I was about 8, on the original Xbox. One of the first things I noticed is how the game felt like it skipped a whole level, turns out the console versions had an additional prologue level, who knew!

I remember liking this game as a kid, so revisiting it I expected to have a good time going in, it has Wolfenstein in the name! Its gotta be good!

RtCW is fine

The story is not super deep. Bj Blazkowicz returns to kill Nazis, discovering an operation to resurrect Heinrich, an ancient dark knight empowered by black magic, and use him in combination with an army of cyborg super soldiers to win the war. Yes the story is dumb, its played so honestly and you could honestly blink and miss it and it wont affect how the game plays out. Yes, in-game documents exist to deepen the world but in truth, you wont get much from them besides "I just hope X doesn't do something stupid", and rest assured, X did the stupid thing.

Music is fine, the game has some memorable tracks that are stuck in my head for sure. (The track Action! is one I like a lot actually: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zly9d5_8zpI) But truth be told I dont know if the music is like, That amazing? Its just fine.

Visually, the game is aging like dirt. Everything is kinda awkwardly blocky and some of the vista's and valleys give me an eerie vibe, like I am in gm_flatgrass or something. enemy models like the sexy black witch lady towards the end show their age big time. Though, I do think the Super Soldiers are very unique! I like the knight aesthetic they have combined with their robotic bits, drives the whole cross between old magic and new tech home nicely and I kinda wish we saw more of that. Graphics are serviceable and if you aren't a fetish for HD textures, they serve the game just fine.

Gameplay wise, the game is, and I hate to keep using this word, fine. You got a good variety of weapons and while some end up falling off like the hand guns, you end up having a decent arsenal of weapons towards the end. That being said, this arsenal is hardly unique either, with the only weapon of note I remember being the Fg42 which became my workhorse weapon towards the end of the game. Even the tesla canon or the Minigun come across as kinda meh, they are the kind of guns you only pull out on a boss or big encounter and while ammo is plentiful for them in the last few levels, their range and accuracy made it so that I was just better off sniping guys off with the Fg42 anyway. All the guns feel samey, serviceable, but kinda samey. The game lacks a Shotgun, which I am taking half an entire star off for that alone. What the fuck.

Level consist of you killing your way to an exit, sometimes you gotta not trigger an alarm, sometimes you gotta backtrack and hunt a guy, one time you even escort a tank (for 2 seconds). Levels are surprisingly varied, though some do end up feeling samey towards the end and while there are secrets to find it doesn't shake much up. Maybe at the time it didn't need to.

For more context, I played on the second highest difficulty because I found early on it was very easy for you to die with little reaction time, turns out the console ports made the game easier. Once I got into the flow of the game it wasn't really hard, just a few parts where you had to deal with enemies that killed you really fast with little way to stop them if you don't react fast enough (The Lopers are probably the worst for this, constantly jumping your rockets and gunfire, actually they were the most fearsome enemies in my opinion and they were gone quick)

RtCW is the Maple Bacon Quarter Pounder from McDonalds for me. I had it once, really liked it, and when it comes out every year or so, consider getting it, maybe I do, maybe I don't, I don't lose sleep over missing out. Now that I just got my burger again, I recall that it is just McDonalds with a fun sauce. Its fine, I'm not offended or angry, but I am not impressed. It hasn't aged that bad, but I don't know if McDonalds Burgers really age anyway, maybe something they put in the meat, maybe the game was so simple that age wasn't gonna bother it much.

Don't lose sleep on skipping this one, Don't spend over 5 dollars for it either. Its just fine.

Update: apparently a shotgun exists in the console port. The fuck?

I would play it more, but uh. It won't run on new pc's.

the greatest strength behind RtCW is that it has the sensibilities on having very immersive levels inspired by modern shooters while also having such a simple pick up and play gameplay, dropping right at the action with very little filler, which resonates a lot to the original, its dead simple and to the point

just don't quick save on Forest Compound, it does weird stuff to the AI

The first part of the game was really fun, a classic corridor like FPS game. The second part of the game made me quit playing however, since the areas became too huge and disorienting.

One of the first games I ever played. The horror elements genuinely scared the shit out of me as a kid.

One of the better wolfenstein games i played, if not the best. Pretty good gameplay wise for its age.

As a kid, I could never finish it, but I was enamoured with style, visuals and sounds.

A classic FPS that has (mostly) aged well.

I'll be the first to admit that nostalgia likely played a factor in my score for this but I think despite parts of this game not aging magnificently that it is still possibly worth checking out over two decades later. I'm not going to discuss the multiplayer because while it was great during the game's height, it is mostly dead nowadays.

The game is broken up into 7 chapters each composed of a handful of missions. The console version has an additional prologue chapter that is actually pretty good, but missing from the PC version (excluding mods). The game starts strong with the first 2 chapters taking place in the titular Castle Wolfenstein and its nearby village. The atmosphere and level design of these opening levels is so well done that it all the more disappointing when you reach the 3rd chapter.

Chapter 3 is the weakest point in RTCW not just due to its uninteresting mission locales (in comparison to the rest of the game) but also due to holding the single worst level in the game. Forest Compound takes you away from the typical confined corridors of the other missions and places you in an open outdoor location where stealth is imperative. An alarm going off is game over. Save scumming and frequent reloading should be expected to get over this tedious stage. Stealth is encouraged in multiple sections of RTCW, but it works best (as does gameplay loop in general) when you are in confined locations.

Chapters 4 and 5 pick up in overall quality especially with the Secret Weapons Facility and X-labs. It is here (and the previous chapter) that RTCW takes a break from the occult to focus on Deathshead, the overarching villain of most of the franchise.

Finally, Chapters 5 and 6 reach the same highs over the first 2 chapters in my opinion. All levels here are distinct, memorable, and well designed. Paderborn Village is an example of a well-designed stealth mission in contrast to previously mentioned level in Chapter 3. The concept here is the same, but it takes place in the streets, alleyways, and interiors of a village at night making for a much more forgiving and enjoyable experience.

Enemy types are fairly varied though there are some especially annoying ones that show up in the lab levels specifically. There's a pretty good selection of weapons here as well, though the game showers you in MP40 ammo so I'm not sure why you would ever need to use any of the hand guns. Later enemies being especially tanky leading to using anything less than the FG 42 feeling bad.

Sound design is excellent for the time outside of some moments where the music felt a bit overbearing, most noticeably during stealth sections where I outright disabled it so I could better hear enemies.

If you are playing this on PC, you'd probably be best just playing RealRTCW as it fixes many of the issues with the game on modern hardware as well as adding in the console exclusive content. Out of curiosity I did manage to get the base version of the game working on PC following tweaks outlined on the PCGamingWiki, but I did have an issue with the game crashing on death that I could not resolve. I'm assuming this isn't an issue in RealRTCW.

If you are looking for a classic shooter that nails its atmosphere you could certainly do worse. Just be prepared to deal with the annoyances that might come with the age of the title.

One of several FPS games that came out around this time that is this awkward mix of tactical shooter and the earlier more arcadey ones. See also Soldier of Fortune II or Project I.G.I. I don't particularly care for any of them. It's not really satisfying as a shooter, filled with bullshit difficulty and design.

The opening missions at the castle are fun, but the further you get the more it becomes about peeking through the rifle scope taking potshots at long range and it's just no fun. This has a fervent cult following who love it, nostalgic or not, but to me i think it is pretty weak compared to other FPS games of the time, not to mention other games in the Wolfenstein series.

The game's just really average and short, I have nothing to say on it.

My second videogame. I have played it more than 15 times till now...

I didn't know nazis had sexy women in very tight leather suits as special ops units. I'll ask my teacher about it

First act is really good, it goes downhill from there tho. Worst offender is that you don't get to kill uncle Adolf

Phenomenal, amazing game. All the guns feel great.

My favorite FPS of all time. Played it for the first time as a kid and it gets better with every replay
