nobody. nothing. nowhere; broken souls drifting like ronin in a blood-red neon hell of capitalist dystopia. the only meaning to be found is in the adrenaline rush of pulling a trigger against nameless bodies, or the swing of a blade against human flesh; if you can even call the bucket of bolts wired together with skin, human.

wake up puppy, we have a city to burn.

not exactly groundbreaking or all that thematical engrossing; one can't help but feel the cyberpunk genre is used here as a sort of pastiche for cool design and setting, however, that design and setting is undeniably cool and well crafted. the hub world of rengkok south is filled with interesting detail down to every little neon LED that lights up the back alleys; plenty of neo-punk styled characters to interact with as well that make for a bit of fun. the strongest aspect of this game is its ability of immersion and atmosphere. side note: the soundtrack goes so hard, like holy shit, sidewalks and skeletons are awesome! plus some great head-bangers by zamilska

in my opinion, the gameplay feels mean and overly brutal, which is totally the point and 100% a compliment. not as satisfying as others in the top-down action shooter genre but definably more hard-hitting; some enemies take more hits than one which exemplifies the visceral intensity of the action and adds difficulty. also, a really neat skill-tree that allows the player to build upon and easily switch between different playstyles on the go. the last hour or two of this is probably the best part as it constantly adds new elements to the fights, switches environments, and combines many different bosses/enemy types to result in a blistering finale of gladiatorial-like combat. i will admit that it can get a little tedious in the middle, especially in the boss department; there's like three different boss fights that you repeat multiple times; the mother machines, a bunch of like high-ranking guards, and a tank-like enemy.

if you can swallow a bit of tedium and some awkward mechanical controls, you'll be rewarded with an immersive and enjoyably bloody affair of cyberpunk ethics. take this review with a grain of salt because im a cyberpunk junky and will overlook A LOT in order to plug my soul into the net, altar my body with pervasive tech, and bask under the spellbinding lights of a futuristic city.

Stellar art direction and soundtrack but very little beyond that.

Rushed and barebones story with no voice acting, general clunkiness, cheap enemies that are both frustrating and easy to defeat, unnecessary amount of weapons and skills and a very shallow hub world between missions.

This game should've been way simpler and focused on snappy gameplay instead of trying to be something so bloated and unpolished as a consequence. Kind of a shame honestly.

Rating: 8.6/10 - Great

I certainly like this games more than most but the music and story are pretty neat and I really enjoyed them combat.

Some of the weapons aren't great and the extra modes didn't grab me but that's mostly about it in terms of complaints.

Falls short of the perfection of something like the Hotline Miami games, but for what it's worth Ruiner puts in a good effort. This is by no means a bad game, just a potentially great one let down in a few key areas. It typically plays great, and the core loop is very fun and polished, outside of a slight overreliance on giving all the enemies a teleporting dash in the later areas to artificially increase difficulty. I get doing that for a few special enemies but I'm not sure it makes much sense for like heavy minigun guys to be dashing all over the place as well. Also, the visuals are a bit too bland for my liking. I get what they are going for here, with the stark red lighting in the seedy crime dens and industrial underground factories in which you carry out your violent missions, but it becomes stale by around the halfway point. The look and design of the world are clearly inspired by Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira, so it's a shame that the overreliance on a constant red and black color palate diminishes Ruiner's ability to live up to the beauty of that film's visuals. I'm sure this sort of thing works for some, if not most people but it did occasionally become an annoyance in my playthrough. As for the story, it's generally tolerable but never truly interesting or well-presented. that's fine, it doesn't ever overstay its welcome and can be easily ignored outside of maybe the very underwhelming ending. The one aspect of Ruiner that I did feel was truly perfect was the music, the score fits the gameplay and tone just right and every track sounds great. This isn't quite great and I would never recommend it over something like Hotline Miami or even Furi, but for what it is, it's very fun to play.

Looks cool, sounds cool, plays like shit. I spent most of the time wishing I was playing Nex Machina instead.

It has a great track by Susumu Hirasawa which is not his typical style but more ambient, and that and the town it is placed in along with the Katsuhiro Otomo-style art and the nice action makes it worth it.
The Ascent and that new Katsuhiro Otomo-style AI-stole-my-world-game all got inspired by RUINER is safe to say.

This is a great game, and it's only big problem is that it ends way too soon, when there could've been so much more fun stuff to mess around with. I hope the developers learn from this, so that they can make their games feel more complete. The music and the balance between the gun and melee combat is a real highlight of this game for me, and is a big part of what makes it stand out from a gameplay perspective. In conclusion, the game here is really good, and the atmosphere is so unique and charming, which goes really well with the challenging and rewarding gameplay, but it's just way too short. Still, this is worth playing.

i know action games are supposed to be short but ruiner is a little too brief. three levels of packed combat arenas with no real variety in enemy encounters. borders on sensory overload how much shit you can pull off. the music is great and the story is fine, a little cliche in its cyberpunk setting. kind of dissapointed they didn't make a sequel. puppy is my best friend

visually so amazing, but way too short.

Super cool fast-paced action game with gameplay similar to something like Hotline Miami except a little slower and with cool abilities to give you some option with how you approach combat. Cyberpunk style is always a plus for me and the game does it well especially with character and enemy designs.

That final chapter clapped me harder than Kanye (allegedly) clapped Jeffree Star's cheeks.

good short but good excited for the next game from this company

Visually and audibly, a real fucking treat. Wonderful art design combined with an absolutely stellar soundtrack.

Great combat as a whole, though sadly ends like right as it truly starts to find its stride... The final chapter is sick as fuck.

One complaint is the controls take some fine tuning for sure, but I never quite felt like I had something that felt as smooth or snappy as other twin stick shooters.

the gameplay is repetitive and the story pretty generic, and while the world looks cool theres not much interesting stuff to see and do, the ending is better than I expected, but it doesnt bring it up further than just okay

Another serviceable indie action-game that met me at an unfortunate time when I was developing an appreciation for actual arcade-titles and not being as interesting mechanically as ones I'd already played. I'm definitely not opposed to playing it through, but it isn't a priority.

What an aesthetic! Can't say enough good things about the style and presentation. This is proper future dystopia with a killer soundscape to boot.

Unfortunately, it feels pretty bad to play. For a game so eager to focus on its violence - and by all rights this ought to play like Hotline Miami - the combat just feels disjointed and wonky. There's no oomph, the timing and hitboxes are off, the animations are wimpy. The level design is missing; the environments are beautiful, but the terrain is too simple, too forgettable.

As much as I love this game, I have to admit I never actually beat it. RUINER's world and aesthetic I feel like are it's main driving points, as it has that gritty cyberpunk aesthetic mixed in with Asian architecture (which I think is a badass combo) it's OST and Hotline Miami like gameplay make it pretty fun.

soundtrack very good, fits the game well.

Killer aesthetics and visuals and a banger soundtrack. The gameplay was a little clunky and takes time to get used to. The plot isn't very memorable but the game overall is a fun play if you have a few hours to kill.
