the game is just as confusing as the anime >:(

It's fun but gets tedious and confusing

I am not a big fan of VN, but this one kept me interested the whole way through. Most likely the game would have been way more enjoyable if I understood japanese, but I literally looked forward to read hours of dialogue every night as I was playing this. In some ways, I'd say the game is even more interesting than the anime, it really pulls you into lain's world and psyche and feels much more personal. Though I believe the anime is overall the better experience.

The way it is structured is both interesting and annoying. You navigate a clunky UI to open files that contain different recordings of the events, they won't always be in proper order, but you will eventually piece things together. Some other reviewer felt the voyeuristic treatment of lain was "suspicious", but I feel it is intended- you are basically a stranger searching through her files in the wired. This game is dark.

Overall I have my theories about how this connects to the anime. Some say the connection is simply thematic and they are alternate realities. Personally I believe this is a prequel of the anime telling the story of the other 'wired' lain, that would later 'inspire', or in a way of speech, reincarnate in the artificial lain in the anime.

I was surprised at how much of a departure from the series this is, and it’s a far more fascinating companion piece for it. It’s even more sparsely plotted than the show—its narrative distilled into a two-hander character study—and it is darker than a moonless night. Placing the creative focus on the game’s aural elements leads to some really uniquely powerful moments. Essential for anyone who dug the show

I dont know what else I could say about this game besides the fact that I adore the light it shines on mental illness and the help you can recieve for dealing with said illnesses through the protagonist of Lain herself. By the end while it did worsen my mental health I cant help but appreciate what the game set out to do

I find this game (if you can even call it that) so unusual and dense that I don't really know how to talk about properly. It really shook my heart and made me feel a certain way even if I didn't entirely understand what was going on. I'm still sort of reeling from the experience. Lain PSX presents a lot of existential questions and scenarios that I found deeply moving and disturbing at times. With how intimate the diaries and files are in this game, Lain and Touko come across to me as some of the most believable and human characters I've seen in a game. It really showcases how profoundly loneliness and isolation can affect a person's mind, especially a child growing up. The game makes a lot of use of psychiatric terminology to go about this. It clearly feels very well researched. Never gonna forget this game.

If you love the anime, I urge you to play this game. If you love the game, I urge you to watch the anime. Many of their themes and ideas are tightly intertwined and certain concepts that are mentioned or can be inferenced in one medium are expanded or elaborated upon in the other. The two are definitely most rich when experienced hand in hand.

No matter where you go, everyone’s connected.

LET'S ALL LOVE LAIN

A beautifully haunting mess of format, absolutely devastating and personal, but not particularly logical nor linear. An amalgamation of seemingly menial logs, turned into fundamental terror all encapsulated by a odd, alien foray into a mass of taboo and haunted data.

I'd recommend playing this game here: https://laingame.net/ with both the simplified and TSX versions being fantastic though the Simplified being definitely the most cohesive as you can tackle it at your own pace and rewind/skip at your own leisure without the hassle of its obtuse node system.

Gameplay elements included (for TSX), it's a purposefully clunky mess of slow menu choices as you slowly go from log to log, unlocking others, and watching a screen of data move over and over (with chances of things appearing if idle). Overall, not fantastic but serves its purpose. Ultimately outdated.

What makes this media piece so memorable as a "game" is its experience, even in the two modern ways you can play; it's still squeamish and utterly overloading. Not many other games have near the amount of encapsulated phobias and latent trauma that this game handles so well. It's subtle, arguably slow, personal, and painful.

I'm not comfortable putting a rating on this, as I still feel as though theres more to explore within this game than I've gotten to, I really liked it. But I also wholeheartedly believe it'll take me a long while before I revisit this... it really messed me up the night i saw that final cutscene

who the hell designed this ui

edit: gonna give a second chance later on

Database narrative as moe personification. Impressive atmosphere and structural sensibilities, but the game's voyeuristic treatment of Lain is deeply suspect, especially given that this has one of the cruelest endings I've seen in basically anything. Doesn't help that whoever designed the UI is a psychopath.

Underrated game. Its weird but its so interesting at the same time. Be wary of cws tho. The game is quite dark in a way that will definitely mess with your psychological state... Its totally worth it tho :'D

crawling through this labyrnthian mess of files permanently fucked up my brain at the age of 15

the most emotionally draining artistic experience of my life

This game is an important piece is the massive r/MegaTen Discord Server lore.

I didn't get it, but it turned me into a trans girl

watched the fmvs on youtube and woke up as a girl the next day

me when im dating lain: Not gonna be active on Discord tonight. I'm meeting a girl (a real one) in half an hour (wouldn't expect a lot of you to understand anyway) so please don't DM me asking me where I am (im with the girl, ok) you'll most likely get aired because ill be with the girl (again I don't expect you to understand) shes actually really interested in me and its not a situation i can pass up for some meaningless Discord degenerates (because ill be meeting a girl, not that you really are going to understand) this is my life now. Meeting women and not wasting my precious time online, I have to move on from such simple things and branch out (you wouldnt understand)

A fractured story told through audio logs, diary entries, and the occasional short video clip. It tackles similar themes to the anime of identity, memory, and mental illness, but in a much more directly psychological fashion, with less of the tangents into the outright weird and conspiratorial. It's a more personal story, diving into the minds of its two main characters as they, and their relationship, evolve over time.

I consider this an essential experience not just for Lain fans, but fans of psychological media in general.
