in the past

The stones of foundation of the series's themes as a whole. Getting into the inspirations of this game makes it all the more obvious that this was a very engaged story. Unfortunately, it is mechanically a very dated game, as well as visually, and this drags down the potential it has. A remake would no doubt make it a timeless work of art.

I played Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga games. And i played all Persona games(Except Eternal Punishment). I like this series and i was curios for first game. I was expecting a boring game. Or rather, I was expecting a slow-paced and very outdated game. But surprisingly the game is still fun. Because the battles are very fast, unless you are in the open world, the battle screen does not enter at the moment of encounter with the loading screen. You fight directly and it ends very quickly. There are many factors that make the game practical, and I know that the Playstation 1 version also contributes to this, so I am giving my score based on this version (I also played it a little on SNES).

What I enjoyed:
•The game was really impressive for something that was made 30 years ago. The PSX version was also superb with its updated graphics and music, as well as the Quality of Life additions.
•The game did a great job developing its atmosphere. From the fallout at the start of the game, to Girl’s Mind, to Flooded Tokyo, each major area was able to envoke a feel in me.
•Seeing where Shin Megami Tensei began was truly an interesting experience. All the demons, all the references, all the themes, all the melodies that would return in future games.
•It really felt like your decisions and actions had weight, far more than they do in Persona games. The Law and Chaos factions both had clear goals in mind, and you really had to do some thinking when faced with a dilemma. I went neutral, but my only non-neutral decision was aiding Yama in Ikebukuro, something I really had to decide whether I wanted to do it or not.
•In general, the game was very lore rich and thought provoking.

What could’ve been better:
•The gameplay was a little rudimentary. Out of the first-person MegaTen games, it probably had the weakest dungeons. Some of them were too long, some of them had mechanics that hampered enjoyment and some were just bland. I also didn’t like the easiness of combat or the lack of skill inheritance.
•Asura and Michael were quite underwhelming final bosses, I feel. It was nice to see them have a prominent role, but I don’t know if they work as the final embodiments of Chaos and Law that the game offers.

YOU BETTER ENJOY THOSE IDENTICAL PSX CORRIDORS YOU LITTLE B-

Probably the best version of SMT1, navigation is made slightly more tolerable due to actual 3d render of the GODDAMN CORRIDORS (instead of the pretend 3d of the snes), moving sideways and a quick map buttons were also added which are godsends for this game.

Besides that it's SMT1 with some better sprites, backgrounds and some bugfixes & correcter oversights I believe. It's outdated no way around that, but it has charm to attract curious SMT fans like myself.

I finished this game in 37 hours (Law Path). The game is good, but i gotta admit that the last dungeon is horrible. I can see redeemable qualities in this game.

Very good if played with a guide and some directions, especially for building the party. I will keep with it one day, but from what I played it was nice.

Went into this expecting it to be hella jank and not very good due to being THE FIRST ONE. However it's actually a pretty good game with a banging soundtrack and incredible post-apocalyptic atmosphere.

I'm glad I played this game, where the series all started. Looking back though it wasn't all that special. The atmosphere was cool as always along with the soundtrack being good. The game had some fun characters. The dungeons were mostly lackluster mazes that didn't do a whole for me however, and that is pretty much all the gameplay of this game as the battles are really easy. Bosses can be just be hit with bufu or zio spells and can't do a thing. Random encounters were mostly a pushover after the first area, and even the final bosses. Granted I had the best equipment, but i still should not be able to comfortably use auto in the games final battles and easily come out on top. To top it off all the endings were pretty boring too. I'm glad this game paved way for all the games we got, but it isn't that special looking back.

Old Game, hellish but beautiful

Para ser el primero es bastante bueno.

I enjoyed this game quite a bit, it's a lot more of a simple straightforward dungeon crawl. The only real issue I have with the game is the fact that demon negotiation is wildly inconsistent and often can feel like a massive waste of time. Also I wish there was a way to back out of auto combat after you choose it. Once you select it it will keep you locked in to it until the battle ends one way or the other.

Game aged surprisingly well, even better than the first Persona game I would argue, even if the last dungeon made me want to kill myself a little bit.

Wow I did not realize there was an English translation version of this. The semi-polygonal dungeon view marks such an improvement for navigation. The definitive version of one of the most important games ever made.

stunlock 90% of the game with zio skills with good vibes AND a map you can bring up with the press of a button (mappa still exists though)

I loved my time with this game.

It's grindy, it's repetitive, it's confusing, it's really simple, and STUPIDLY easy.

But god, that atmosphere, that story.

It's an oddly comfy game.

This holds up surprisingly well, and fits right in with the stories and themes of the other Shin Megami Tensei's. While it may be a bit dated when it comes to combat and art design, the sound track and story are still great even now. If you want to give the game a try, I suggest using the newly released PSX patch (the version I played), due to it's enhanced music and better overworld.

SMT 1's remaster for the PSX is alright. The atmosphere for the first 1/4 or so of the game is great. The soundtrack is catchy and has some of the series' best tracks. This game was the proper debut for SMT's alignment system. The story is decent, but the characters are uninteresting. Combat is okay but highly exploitable. Graphically it's okay. It's on the shorter side like Soul Hackers, about 25 hours long. Overall not a bad start to the series, but I would only suggest this game if you are interested in seeing how the SMT series began.
