It over-complicates the nearly perfect balance of its previous entry. Too many situational things that can randomly pop up that makes preplanning go out the window, and makes for more reactionary decisions; it's like going from Chess to Go-Fish. Very unfriendly to beginners who have not played the previous game, never my recommended party game.
The base game is somewhat lacking, I'll admit, but considering the low price of all of the DLC on a regular basis and the massive amount of QoL mods that exist for this game, this is probably the definitive Civilization experience. Playing on Immortal and Deity is a challenging but rewarding experience and multiplayer matches feel incredible. The option to play asynchronously or even play some fun side modes (a Civilization battle royale??) delivers a ton of variety.
A really solid strategy game with a lot of improvements from it's previous editions. Districts are a very compelling and interesting addition that are very fun to learn and optimize around. It plays very similarly to Civ 5 but fixes many of the issues I had with it, playing wide is a more viable option and victory types feel more varied and thought out. Some people might find the art style jarring but personally that doesn't bother me. Biggest issues are probably issues with balance and complexity, religious combat being very boring and one dimensional whilst also locking founding religions to a limited number of "players" mean that levels of complexity get stripped away compared to something like a domination victory. Overall a very addictive gameplay experience and makes me excited for a future installment.
[Review of the Nintendo Switch version]
It does its job, letting you play Civ VI on the go, but it really struggles to do that job at times. As expected the graphics and framerate take a big hit, but what take perhaps the biggest hit are the load times, which can be pretty atrocious. CPU players’ turns can take upwards of 3 minutes to complete. The worst part is just how much of a battery hog this game is in handheld mode, with just an hour of continuous playtime eating nearly 30% of my battery. The Switch also runs really hot running this game, with the fans working double time just to keep the Switch’s processor from exploding.
I commend Aspyr for managing to squeeze Civ VI onto the Switch, but all of its flaws make this port one you’re better off either skipping or sticking to playing it docked.
