Decent ghost detective game but I was frequently confused because I'm stupid.

I really wanted to like this game but god damn it was so boring the only part that I could truly say it was good was the ending with the big plot twist
there is lil to no gameplay and ik thats not the point of the game but the story wasn't all that imo
i m feelin a pretty dull 3/10(or maybe im just hatin on lil ethan idk I wouldn't recommend this one)

A detail-oriented mystery that takes a while to settle into. The mechanics and general process are vague at the start, making for a sometimes frustrating experience in the open-world setting, but once you get the hang of the game's direction, the overall journey becomes significantly smoother and the underlying story revealed stays engaging, layered with metaphor and suspense. Fun time!

What a neat little walking sim. It really keeps you engaged with the story. Very mysterious.

This game is pretty. It is stylized. The music is nice.It has great vibes. But also can be triggering.

This is mostly a walking sim. It has light puzzle elements and a few collectable. It is easy to get all the trophies. There is no platinum though.

The biggest issue here are the order puzzles. Finding all the clues needed to start the puzzle is the issue. Sometimes they are just stupidly well hidden. The order can be a bit obtuse as well. The last thing is that, as is tradition with walking sims, you are slow.

The story is neat. It's not a long game. May last a little too long but still short. Just know that it def can be triggering. It's not a happy game.

It's a great 1 time experience. I would only recommend playing it again if you want to clean up the optional collectables. You will find most on your first playthrough so it won't take more than a few minutes to clean up the rest of the trophies.

A compelling mystery game with some cool puzzles, and a VR mode that makes for some tense moments. It didn't work perfectly in VR, but it was still pretty neat.

Una historia interesante y la mecánica de reconstruir recuerdos es muy buena, la ambientacion también aporta mucho.

An interesting story in a pretty world, but not much else. Even as a fan of games of this sort of genre this one felt like it was missing something. While I enjoyed the mystery of it, I never really cared for any of the characters. Just not enough time/scenes to flesh out the relationships between them, especially for anything from before the incident of the game. Even with the twist at the end of what the whole game is really, it does not feel super well set up.
Can recommend if you like others of the genre such as Everybody's Gone to the Rapture or What Remains of Edith Finch. Its not as compelling as those games, but its still fine enough. Pretty short too, only took me just over 2 hours to complete

The first year or two I had a PS4 brought forth a smorgasbord of intriguing walking simulators and Ethan Carter was a part of that pile. I really liked it and I just want more games like this.

Just because your game is pretty, doesn't mean it's actually good.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a game I had sitting in my backlog for a while, but I really didn't have any expectation for it since I'd barely heard of it, and this game was a lot more interesting than I initially assumed it would be. I'm glad I decided to check it out.

First things first, this game is very beautiful looking. That's pretty obvious, so I won't ramble on about it, but yeah, this game is stunning, and I frequently paused to take in the scenery. The music is also solid and the atmosphere is really well-executed. I felt that the gameplay was pretty fun and unique for this type of game. I liked a lot of the puzzles and mechanics, but I felt the investigations were way too easy and I never really had to question anything, usually the verdict was super obvious at a first glance. I also ran into two major glitches; the first one was where I couldn't interact with a certain object and I had to reload my save and play for like five additional minutes to get back to where I was, and the second glitch was where I couldn't visualize the final murder site no matter what I did, so I had to reload the game. These are admittedly huge bugs that should absolutely be fixed, I don't know what caused them, but they definitely ruined the immersion a lot. But still, the gameplay was fun and a bit relaxing honestly. Though this absolutely is NOT a horror game like it's advertised as.

I also must say that I'm not huge on the "openness" of this game, since I feel it hinders the progression quite a lot. While I understand the idea by making a lot of the game optional since it makes the world feel more explorable, I also feel like it's way too hard to find some of the optional sections, since some are in very precise locations, and the game's true ending is only obtainable by completing all the optional areas, which completely ruins the ending since a lot of it is left unexplained, unless you get the true ending. I personally just ended up using a walkthrough to find all the optional areas, since I didn't want to miss any major content, and I'm glad I decided to do that.

As for the story itself, it's good but nothing amazing. I don't really have much to say about it, aside from the fact that it's your normal paranormal murder story... Until the ending, where it's revealed that everything that occurred was just part of a story written by the titular Ethan Carter. Honestly, I like the ending quite a bit, and while it's not nearly as conclusive as it could've been if they decided to continue down the paranormal mystery route, I think what we got is more interesting and still very conclusive. I think the twist that Ethan wrote the story as a form of escapism from his toxic family is very interesting. It's a lot more interesting than the story simply being about some evil monster making nice people do evil things. I think it's very cool that the "the Sleeper", whom you thought was the antagonist, was likely meant to represent Ethan all along. The amount of foreshadowing as well is very cool, which I always appreciate in games like this. It's a pretty cool ending, and the game has a good story in general.

Overall, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a beautiful looking game with a strong atmosphere and an interesting story. However, while the gameplay, mechanics, and puzzles are fun, I do think the game falls flat in some areas; such as the openness ruining the progression, easy investigations, and very annoying glitches that prevent progress. I recommend checking it out, though you've probably already played it, otherwise you've just been spoiled on everything.

6.5/10

hides an OK mystery story behind ridiculously frustrating and obtuse puzzles. the actual story itself has one of the most underwhelming and opposite-effect-than-intended endings ive ever encountered. graphics and environments are great, voice acting is fine and the music is nice. but the story you uncover leads to nothing and actually uncovering it is a specific brand of pause every minute for a walkthrough nightmare i just hate in games like this. comes off as pretentious and navel-gazy at times too. making the game 'not handholdy' as it says at the beginning only actively hinders the possibly strong progression of things in this case.

Esta curioso Hermoso graficamente, Historia simple y muy relajante pero a la vez tenso

tried it twice. didnt work out other than really being pretty. that's good

Absolutely stunning photorealistic graphics and immersive atmosphere. A walking sim peppered with clever puzzles and an intriguing mystery.

Atmospheric exploration game that really captivated me at the time. You shouldn't expect too much in terms of game mechanics, but the story is well told and very mysterious. I really liked the natural setting and the graphics were really impressive at the time.

so damn pretty

when they feed you the line in the beginning that this game won't hold your hands they weren't lying

i uh, do not jive well with games as open as this, but i liked it a lot anyway, and just kept a guide handy for any time i got stuck, it works for me

For personal reference more than anything else. But have still done the spoiler warning just in case.

Finished for the first time after originally playing about 20 mins(?) of it a couple of years ago and struggling to get into it.

Story is kind of weird and feels like a strange mishmash of a bunch of different things that don't really go together. The cult plot is ok but rendered pointless by the twist which is itself quite good even if its been done better before. The twist does also explain why the various stories are there but in all honesty I think a couple were a little too odd and if they'd been removed the game might have felt more consistent.

The game also feels like its trying a little too hard to say something but due to the writing not being great it leads to some lines that just don't sound good and some short stories that are pretty weird but are entertaining. This may also be explained away with the twist but I still feel like these sections were supposed to be profound.

The gameplay is mostly fine for what is basically just a walking simulator, thankfully you move at a good pace especially when some backtracking may be necessary if you miss something. The few puzzles in the game were kind of annoying but also a bit too obtuse for me so I just used a guide. The main part of the gameplay (outside of the walking) is finding various clues around a small area and then having to put up to 6 visions(?) in chronological order which was pretty easy if not really satisfying as the game then tells you exactly what happened (it just feels like a detective game where you don't really do much detective work).

The world is really nice and pleasant to explore due to a lack of NPCs (outside of one section) and the music that plays throughout the game. I also liked how its all one small world which is not cut off by loading screens or anything making it truly feel free to explore.

The freedom came at a slight cost however, when I got to one of the final areas having not solved any deaths and only doing a couple of the side bits because I didn't realise what it was that I was supposed to be doing when exploring each area. This is warned about in the beginning where the game tells you it won't hold your hand but I think this is a pretty bad choice as the game can get kinda confusing at times if you don't know what to do. At the very least perhaps a tutorial of some kind wouldn't have hurt.

The only glitch I had was when doing the last death, I had a glitch where it wouldn't come up with the button prompt to put the visions in order meaning that I had to quit the game and then come back in which put me right back in the same room and the glitch was no longer present.

Overall the game was alright, I don't think I'll ever come back to it but it was interesting and has made me want to play more of these types of games.

I didnt quite get the hang of the game and got bored after an hour of playing.

I had either played this before, or watched a streamer play it a long time ago, but it was long enough for me to not remember the majority of the game. However, it still made the entire experience some sort of surreal deja vu trip. Loved the gameplay and the puzzles, but I was not a huge fan of the ending.

I disliked this game a lot. It feels very empty, and then there's a weird chase sequence (?) toward the end and at that point i was like i do not care enough. so i shut the game down and watched the rest of a playthrough. and maybe that was a mistake, because the end is... pretty bad. I don't mind sad endings, but all this for something deeply cliche and not at all interesting? Okay. Not that i was invested in the story at all or could tell you gun to my head what happened in it except for the ending. Also, i discovered that i have a deep fear of astronaut suits, which is good to know. I mean, I'm not gonna run screaming, but I'm gonna be unsettled, and i might have to fight back tears. they're freaky, okay? The way you cant see the face... and the proportions on the one in this game were weird... Well, that's my problem, not the game's. The game was just so boring and vapid that me being deeply afraid of the little astronaut was the most interesting thing that happened. Also, i want to say, i love walking simulators. This game just did not do it for me. It's also not really the type of game that should "not hold your hand". i was really mad at that and the phrasing when i played it. I've forgotten most of my critiques of that specifically though. sorry! Hold my hand please, it's cold!

Weird to see this game so low. I played it together with my brother, so maybe the company made it better than it should have but it was a neat short story. There's one particular moment that late in the game, that maybe everyone won't get, but was really cool too

I just don't care what happened to Ethan Carter. Game mechanics are cool and graphics are beautiful though

Cool, short, and pretty with a solid story.

Um walking simulator com uma historinha pra contar, a historia é bem legal, com momentos bem impactantes, mas o final acaba deixando um gosto amargo.

"An interactive experience that doesn't hold your hand", porque llamarlo "walking simulator que acabas pasándote por compromiso con gamefaqs abierto en el móvil al lado para hacerlo menos insufrible" sonaba demasiado honesto.

I remember it had a nice plotwist. I can't remember it though. So it was good but not VERY good.

Plusy: nieprawdopodobna grafika, genialny dźwięk, dość ciekawa historia
Minusy: gra jest krótka, kilka pomniejszych niedoróbek graficznych
