Considering the year this game was released, it was phenomenal to play in 2024. Story was great and combat wasn’t too bad either. Many people say controls are awful, but I adapted quite fast and they ended up being pretty decent. If you like RPGs with a great story but don’t mind outdated graphics this is a game worth checking out.
Amazing RPG that still holds up fairly well today in some aspects. Yes, a lot of the character models are bad. Yes, some of the voice acting is questionable. But this, this is a proper RPG... Tons of good quests, tons of interesting lore, and a rather long and good main quest with varying paths. The tone of the world is perfectly hit and it feels straight from the books. Many quests have a good investigative mystery tone, and everything feels like the whimsical but dark and bloody fairy-tale of the books. Any fan of the later Witcher games, and oldschool RPGs, gotta get this.
A great starting point for the universe with interesting lore and characters all thanks to having the books to work with. The voice acting , main plot and ESPECIALLY the gameplay are all below average. My suggestion is to play the game on the easiest difficulty to have minimal actual gameplay time lol.
Edit/Spoilers: Okay, the story is better if you look into the Alvin-Grandmaster theory. gonna rank this up half a star for that

a great story with great writing and characters, the dialogue is awesome and geralt is hilarious
the choices really feel impactful and I love watching the immediate cause and effects fold once a story arc is finished, through slideshows of images and Geralt overdubbing (same thing that witcher 3 does which i loved)
relative to the games age, i think the world is pretty fleshed out and cozy. the controls are clunky, sure, but the overall gameplay is fine. I honestly enjoy it (besides boss fights which are completely awful, the combat system is so much stronger in fights against multiple weaker enemies)
the ultimate fault of this game is travelling, and unclear quest objectives. sometimes characters you need to talk to are impossible to find, or you find yourself constantly walking back and forth to make minute progress
but in my opinion, the writing in this game more then makes up for its fault and this is an extremely underrated/underappreciated rpg

Is the story good? Yes, it is. Writing as a whole is actually quite good and the game has a great atmosphere that captures the atmosphere of the witcher world perfectly...
That is it. Do not play this. It is extremely repetitive and really, the gameplay adds no real value anyway. The rts gameplay is actually quite cool and unique but after many hours, it just becomes part of the issue. Even more so when MOST OF THE GAMING IS WALKING THROUGH AN EMPTY WORLD BACK AND FORTH BACK AND FORTH AHHHHHH
Yeah don't play unless you increase the movement speed. It's not worth the mental trauma. (do watch a story synopsis though that's good enough)

So after that first 30-minute long cut scene, you're telling me Kojima had no influence on this game at all?
Maybe I'll give it another try sometime this year, but I can confidently say that my initial hour or so with this was the gaming equivalent of trying to use the TV remote with my hands wrapped in packing tape.

This was recommended to me by a friend who's heavily into the games, novels and TV series. I read the first book and enjoyed it, so gave this a go.
I was told this is the weakest game in the series, but I wanted to see the improvements as it progresses. I put about 30 hours into this and got what felt like less than half-way, having followed every diversion along the way and mostly enjoyed the world in which it's set, but I came to rather resent its repetitiveness and clunky action, and put it away. Now it's become annoying that it's keeping me from the (reputedly) much better sequels, and it's time to ditch it for the foreseeable future.

It probably speaks to the inefficient design of this game that I had to use a walkthrough; that, or I'm just impatient and bad at problem solving. Regardless, Witcher 1 serves as an excellent introduction to the universe, as well as the political quandaries that take a central role in the second game. I personally preferred the combo-based combat in this game to 2's Dark Souls-like iteration.
