This game is good, it has tons of that old game charm. It has interesting mechanics, story, characters and places to explore.

It has, however, aged quite poorly. The gameplay is not the most engaging, it is kinda clunky and such. So I was very glad this game is going to receive a remake, because it actually deserves and needs one.

This is, in my opinion, the best game to make you feel like a witcher. There are chapters, and each chapter has at least one big, tough monster to hunt. To defeat them, you actually have to go out of your way to research about it - which potions to use, which poisons to apply, which signs to cast. It can be the difference between dying or succeeding the hunt.

Hearing the witcher franchise happened with the witcher 3 like everybody else, but after trying out couple of hours I realized this game builds what came from before, there is a lot of people that said witcher 3 is a good beginner point and I certainly don't agree with them. Because when Geralt says that character is important to him you don't understand what he meant, because all you can go for is a 3 minute flashback. But after reading the books, I really really get it Geralt and I am glad I did because if I didn't, I would leave this game and not finish it at all.
(Also my thoughts about books are conflicted with how it goes off the rails especially after the 4th book with introducing trillions of characters and can't connect them together naturally and brokes the pacing badly, but at least I can recommend first and second books to everyone because they are not novels, they are short stories that is quick and have excellent pacing also it's slowly develops Geralt to the man we know it today)

Why? Because majority of the main story kinda sucks. You will ask "what the hell do you mean??? Everybody says it's excellent??" Actually yeah it's excellent but only some parts. What I mean is, there is a two story that is going on. One is hunting down a magician that stole the witcher secrets and other is, bonding with your loved ones and teaching a powerful kid to how to live a life. Problem is, magician part of the story is really cliche cartoon like events, what I mean is, you follow the clues to find where the villain is, you run to his door, he escapes and then you repeat this multiple times to comical level, also he is a really boring cliche power loving villain. Just for this reason alone, I thought leaving the game several times.

So as a book reader you can assume that I liked the second part of the story and yes I liked it, especially seeing the previous folk after events of the books and seeing their struggle really touched my heart, also teaching the kid part was really touching as well with how it references ciri without naming it. But one thing really let it down for me is... Really disappointing final act of this game... Kid plot gets rushed, stories of your loved ones doesn't have a proper conclusion, game throws plot back to back with no time to breath and then it ends. Ending really confused me and I had to watch a video to learn really what the heck just happen and I really didn't liked that.

So what I mean is, main story have a potential, but it's all wasted with badly paced events, boring villains, and rushed final act.

World
Maybe people gonna disagree with me, but when it comes to atmosphere witcher 1 is the best, with it's haunting sound effects, people that crying everywhere, constant garbage everywhere etc. You really feel how disgusting this world is. Unfortunately I feel like they don't do that as well in the sequels to make the graphics better and more colorful.
There is one thing bad about the world is... There is so many copy paste npc models that it gets confusing who is who after a while. I am not a fond of that.
There is a slight problem with the world unfortunately and that is walking. There is multiple maps in this game and for some reason only way to go between them is walking to the end of the map. Buy a boat ticket, watch a cutscene and then you can continue and it gets monotonous to walk all the way to the end in every map is an UNDERSTATEMENT. It's pissed me so much that I had to download a faster movement mod, it breaks some of the enemy movement but it's worth it for me.
So I like world but game's systems didn't aged good for it I think.

Side content
This is where the game truly shine in my opinion, I wasn't expecting but side stories is that awesome is that game, why? Because they tie to the main story seamlessly. You solve a person's problem and bum he is there to help in the main story or you want to get more information about the people you met in the main story and bum here is his/her entire life story, not just that there is so many references and connections to the book characters that It resulted with me getting immense pleasure from it. Only side content isn't important I could say is, the hunting missions. Unfortunately they are basic go kill 10 of this 5 of that kind of missions, but other than that I found the side content excellent

Combat
This is the part that many people divided upon, but for me, this is the best game that "gets" the books. People really dislike the combat because it uses hotbar skill system rather than action system like the sequels does. But I think hotbar system helps in it favor in this case, why do you ask?
Because in books, witchers are always "gets prepared" for their next mission and what is hotbar combat is about? Having larger damage numbers and larger defense numbers than the enemy. How do you get that? Finding information about the enemy you will hunt and preparing the correct potions/equipment/magic buffs/oils/stances/swords for the enemy and it really puts you to the mind of the witcher for me and I really liked it.
But there is one vital problem to the combat and that is... You can only do buffs and potions on a campfire and that is bullsh*t right there. Why? Because main story missions loves to suprise you with new enemy variations, so only way to know to prepare is, go into a mission, see the enemy, then load previous save... Or if you are like me, downloading the "mediate anywhere" mod solves everything actually. But in the vanilla it sucks there is no going around it.
Also people really hate, you have to click your attacks like a rythym game but for me it's not such a bad thing, i wasn't that hard to get used to

Lastly inventory. This isn't that much of a loot heavy game, but unfortunately you can't store more than 2 swords to your inventory and only way to store them is go into a bar and store into a chest. I find this really frustrating because sometimes I am not sure if I should get that sword or not and I don't want to return to the bar everytime. You can solve this with storing mod but it's a pain in the vanilla game unfortunately.

Bugs
For me it wasn't that much of a clear experience, t-pose problems, crashes, wrong enemy spawns etc. but one bug really made me nervous... Why? Early in the game, you have a ring to give to a someone so he will let you in. The problem is, next day I open the game it wasn't there. Did I sell it I thought and looked every merchant and it wasn't there, I looked every...where... My previous save was too old so I didn't want to return it either, I almost left the game but I found out that there was an alternate way to get the ring from someone and finally finished the quest. Unfortunately this quest really sticked to my head with the trouble it gave so unfortunately this game isn't bugless even with the enhanced edition somehow.

So if there is a lot of jank in it, then why 4/5? Believe it or not, but for me, world was that much of immersive and side content was that much of impressive to me that it overcomes the jank part for me. If I look at it objectively it's 3/5 but as a personal review, I give this 4/5 with it's world, interesting characters, fun references to the books and enjoyable side content

So after that first 30-minute long cut scene, you're telling me Kojima had no influence on this game at all?

Maybe I'll give it another try sometime this year, but I can confidently say that my initial hour or so with this was the gaming equivalent of trying to use the TV remote with my hands wrapped in packing tape.

i'd give 4 stars if the gameplay didn't suck ass

Extremely unpopular opinion... I am not a big fan of the Witcher series much at all, but despite it's clunkiness and dated aspects in the characters and some of the tone, this is probably my favorite of the three games in the series.

I won't go in to a rant about it too much, but essentially I just like the story and simplicity of the conflict in this one the most. It stands on it's own incredibly well and the story of both Geralt's identity and ultimate confrontation with the Wild Hunt and the more personal and isolated unrest happening in the city stuck with me the most of any game in the series.

I probably have more minor nitpicks with this game than the others, but the story itself is the only one in the series I really actively enjoy a lot.

I liked the prologue but the game didn't aged well, it's really really slow

Innovative; player decisions very much matter in the development of certain story events. Almost cool enough to distract me from the fact that the gameplay is a hot steaming pile of horse manure.

I don't want to drown this review with rivers of text, so I'll be brief.

I believe CDPR's "The Witcher" is a masterpiece for two reasons: the storytelling and the RPG system.

The story of this game is one of the best in the gaming industry for a number of "whys", but I don't want to mess with it.

On the other hand, we have the RPG system, which is far superior to both of Witcher's sequels. I like to play RPG games, where the progress and leveling make sense. I also like the combat system (although, I understand why it is hated), the enemies are fun to fight, unlike Witcher 3, where both above-mentioned aspects are totally broken, and the combat is boring and uninspiring because you can't fight over leveled enemies, otherwise you'll die. What a horseload of bullshit!

I kinda got hopelessly addicted to this game, putting in way more time than was required to beat it. The characters and world building were so immersive and interesting, the writing was always engaging and had a slight humour to it which was enjoyable. It's almost hard to believe that this is their first game with the scale of it, but the signs become pretty quickly evident, the super limited variety of NPC models, small scale environments and reused interiors. Despite this it still manages to make those environments feel dense, the reuse of NPC models quickly fades away from the from your attention because the dialogue and story immerse you so much. The combat system is pretty poor, you can adapt to it but it's basically clicking to a timer for the most part. It doesn't feel like you have much control but most encounters are small enough that it never really becomes a hindrance. I'm really interested to see how the remake goes with how different this game is from its sequels.

Just played this game so I know the story and I can transfer the safe to Witcher 2, so I really don't have any expectations for this game either. However, it has to be said that this game has aged very very badly and must have been pretty weird even for its time when compared to games released in 2007 like GoW 2 or BioShock.

Some aspects of the game are quite good. I think the animations of the attacks are well done and I like the images and the music of the game. The dialogue is really bad and also very cliché. Partly unfunny when they try to be funny, but again funny simply because the presentation is so bad. I also don't know why, Geralt looks like a fish in my opinion, his facial proportions are really weird.

The battle system is also really boring. It's basically a rhythm game. Every time you left click, Geralt does his attack animations and you get a mark on your cursor every time when you can click again so you can continue your attack. I mean it's unique, that's true, but I really don't know what's fun about it.

Could write a lot about other things, like the infinite running in the game, but what bothers me about this game is that you're kind of in a dilemma if you've played Witcher 3 before. Some people say "if you want to start playing Witcher and experience the franchise as a whole, start at part 1", but you really have to say that you can't get people in line with this game nowadays. I've also played Witcher 2 a bit, but Witcher 2 is not a game that you can recommend to people to get them hooked on the franchise. You just have to recommend Witcher 3, but that makes the two parts before it and especially this part unplayable. I really hope that CD Red will eventually release a remake of the first two parts, or at least part 1. Otherwise, this game is not recommendable at all, unless you want to fade out all other aspects of the game and concentrate purely on the story.

If you enjoy RPG games with a good fantasy story, detailed lore and interesting characters, you'll have a blast with this game. Unfortunately the game lacks in fighting department, but this type of point-and-click fights were very common during the 2000s, so you should be aware of what you get into.

The graphics were beautiful, especially in the environment, the character models and textures were lacking. There were a few interesting choices with animation, like the boob physics for females, especially Triss at the start. The painting styled artworks at certain story points were beautiful, but the sex cards, that you get from banging all the ladies you can find, were a little weird, although very pretty looking.

Soundtrack was absolutely fantastic, and I really enjoyed traversing the lands of Temeria while listening to the music playing in the background. Especially appreciated the detail that when the time of day changed to night also the soundtrack changed. Continuing with the sound department, Voice acting was... lacking. The reactions of characters were mostly very monotone and felt like everyone was absolutely bored out of their minds when anything remotely exciting happened lol.

I adored the dice poker though, such a fun minigame.

The Witcher hasn't aged well. The storyline and the atmosphere are very well done. It has the darkest atmosphere in the whole trilogy, just as it should be. I love the old-school vibes and mechanics. But that's it.

The combat is clunky and too easy even on the hardest difficulty. If you play it right, you can become immortal. Even the boss fights feel like fighting a normal enemy. It took me around 1-2 min to beat the final boss. The dialogues are bad - did a child write them? At least the voice acting is good.

I encountered some annoying bugs. For example, sometimes I couldn't talk to anyone nor loot or draw my weapon. The only way to fix it was by saving and restarting the whole game. I had to redo the whole last 20 min of the game because of this (and because I didn't feel the need to save). Sometimes instead of a cinematic, I would get a black screen and again have to restart the whole game. In some of the more populated areas, my FPS would drop from 110 to 40. I understand it's an old game but it's still annoying.

In terms of equipment - don't expect much. There are only 3 armours, the last one you get is in the final chapter. Not much choice in weapons either. You end up with a lot of coins... and nothing to do with them.

Despite everything, I will still recommend it simply because it's The Witcher. For people who are just entering the world of The Witcher - don't hesitate! Read the books by Andrzej Sapkowski and continue with the games. It was cheap on sale (2€ only). With an open mindset, it's easy to get used to the old mechanics and clunky combat. The Witcher made me appreciate even more what a masterpiece The Witcher 3 is!

Amazing RPG that still holds up fairly well today in some aspects. Yes, a lot of the character models are bad. Yes, some of the voice acting is questionable. But this, this is a proper RPG... Tons of good quests, tons of interesting lore, and a rather long and good main quest with varying paths. The tone of the world is perfectly hit and it feels straight from the books. Many quests have a good investigative mystery tone, and everything feels like the whimsical but dark and bloody fairy-tale of the books. Any fan of the later Witcher games, and oldschool RPGs, gotta get this.

Old Game Review:

After reading the books I decided to play this. As a fan of the books it was cool to see all the references and I thought the story was pretty good. Unfortunately, the gameplay was a little rough, so I'm excited for the remake.

I had to quit 11 hours in. Quite the slog to get through and really primitive to play, even in 2015. But I can't get over collecting trading cards of characters in the game by having sex with them LMAO.

I'll definitely give the remaster a shot though!

Solid story, your actions have impact on it and on the other games of the trilogy. repetitive combat

70/100

One of my favourite RPGs.
The only thing that bothers me personally is the reuse of character models and how bad the animations are sometimes, oh and the second act involves a lot of going forth and back with little direction, that's on purpose but it's confusing at first.

I've also heard that the English version is pretty bad, can't comment but with how much Polish specific references are in the game, I can see that happening.

A good first entry to a beautiful franchise, it's story, dialogue, and atmosphere are top notch, the game has a comedic undertone that makes it not so depressing, a lot of choices have consequences and will lead to bloodshed, making you really think about what you pick, sure the combat is a bit boring and too easy, and sure there is a lot of backtracking here, but even with that, the game clocks in at around 40 hours if you do everything, and it doesn't feel dragged out. I highly recommend playing this game as it is a great way to enter the witcher universe; don't skip it! Also, the soundtrack is great! 7.5/10

Everyone has to start somewhere, and for CDPR's critically acclaimed RPG franchise it's here.
I'll be quick and blunt, this game sucks. I do not recommend it to anyone who wants good gameplay or a smooth experience.
It has redeeming qualities like the writing and music, the humor of the main cast is there in full view with Gearlt's reactions to the dumbest things being priceless. The story itself is intriguing and kept me very interested in an otherwise dull game full of backtracking
across three or four major set pieces (set in the same city) where they took away teleporting for some reason after giving me it and boring combat. Me replaying this years later has only reconfirmed my original feelings of the game.

Gameplay is extremely clunky, with way too much backtracking, repetitive combat, lack of character model variety, but somehow still has some charm in its delivery due to the effort the devs put to make this game happen.
The writing is, in my opinion, fitting to the setting when looking at the books and has a lot of strong points for staying true to it in spirit.

Can't really recommend playing it, though.
