This is THE indie game. A 2D Metroidvania that has some fun ideas, good gameplay, and some mildly antiquated design philosophies. Save system occasionally meant having to go through some dialogues several times through. Level design was pretty good, leveling up guns to see the different effects was fun, music was good, artstyle was good. Characters, setting, and tone were all really good. Solid game.
In a way it's an "objective upgrade" over the original, featuring new graphics, a new soundtrack, optional difficulty and challenge modes - all of which can be disabled to just play the original at a higher resolution - but I just can't help wondering what the point was other than to pocket some money off of an originally free game. Pixel definitely deserves this money, but does Nicalis? I'm not sure...

played this version since I couldn't get into the freeware version for whatever reason but vibed with this better. it's a shame that Nicalis owns this because Cave Story is actually a really fun and enjoyable game. that being said I think I'll just have to accept that I will never be a skilled enough player to see the good ending

The game is beautiful both this and the original version, music is great and gameplay and story works really well. But sometimes the game asks too much and less skilled players will found walls that they can't climb.
The last boss rush for the normal ending asks for a save and a better healing between the third and four boss to be less tiring when you lose against the final one.
