a game that tries to tackle serious issues like child abuse while also simultaneously having several panty shots of someone who is canonically 15 years old

edit: rewatching a friend play this and while most of it is actually just boring, i can’t believe i forgot that there’s like a 10 minute span where they upskirt the 9 year old CSA victim like 3 different times as a joke. actual disaster of a video game

All in all I can’t say I regret playing this, thanks to the characters and the story with its many plot twists (even though they weren’t nearly as clever and surprising as the ones in the original trilogy).

The gameplay, on the other hand… I simply don’t get it. Why did they have to change it so radically and create a third-person shooter instead of a visual novel mystery game? Running around and shooting Monokumas for hours and hours wasn’t challenging and fun for me at all, and Komaru’s slow movement speed made everything even more frustrating. The automatic camera is completely out of control, keeping track of all the enemies around us can be very tricky, and even the boss fights become extremely repetitive very fast.

So, if you love the series, like me, then by all means, give this one a shot, but otherwise I wouldn’t recommend it just for the sake of the gameplay as it’s sometimes downright un-bear-able (sorry, I couldn’t resist…).

optimal udg experience:
1. turn on the soundtrack
2. play literally any other third person shooter
3. watch cutscenes from udg every 20 minutes

this game sucks

I love borderline shovelware!

Unironically the best game in the series.

Probably due to playing on a Vita but this game felt like shit to control lmao

A glorification of childhood abuse and generally super gross. I would never recommend this game to anyone.

a frankenstein monster of a game with a 'stop rape' minigame

This review contains spoilers

There's a minigame to stop getting sexually assaulted.

darkest danganronpa game its good dont skip this please shit gameplay tho, not for casual players, only danganronpa fans

i wouldn't wish this experience on anyone

game was a bit of a drag to play but.. touko/komaru cute

did they use the same resources and engine as yanderedev

If you didn't like Toko in DR1, don't play this.

Juego infravalorado por los propios fans de la saga y aun no se porque

A game I see as criminally underrated. This probably my favorite Danganronpa game to be honest. I love combination of dark yet trashy plot. The combination of RE4 meets anime is also something you don't see very often. And the game made Toko easily one my favorite characters in the series. I just had a blast playing it.

Really great story wrapped around a good shooter that has its really fun moments but could definitely be better

Surprisingly competent for what it is. The story can get DARK (even for a Danganronpa game), and there are a few puzzles that are agonizing, but the final few hours are SO good.

If you're a fan of DR, and have played DR 1 and 2, you owe it to yourself to give this a shot.

better than most people give it credit for

"child abuse is awful and can have lasting psychological effects :( proceeds to graphically sexualise 12-15 year olds"

also one of the supporting characters literally admits to being a pedophile and the main character (who is 15 years old) thinks that his openness on the subject makes him attractive. Um.

feels trivial to mention this after listing those uhh, flaws, but the controls SUUUUUCK and the story is mediocre at best. the only saving grace of this game is that it fills in some of the gaps of sdr1&2, and it made me like toko more than i did before. Um. Anyways. probably don't play this

A monstrosity of a game that not only manages to have mediocre third person shooter gameplay with a game-breaking gimmick when upgraded to grind for ammo and hearts. Not only that, but the controls also sucked. In addition to this, characters, story, and comedy that fall utterly flat on its face. The writing is a fucking mess where in it pull many trigger warnings such as rape, abuse, and sexual assault mentions for children but then proceeds to sexualize one of the children. Not to mention it presents you with a minigame where its main objective is to not get groped, and not fill the "obedience meter"; it thinks it's really funny using a minigame that's close to rape and it shows how awful this game is. In early chapters the story was fine, but then it shows you show much uncomfortable stuff in the form of voice acting and cgs to accompany it so it's definitely the darkest game in the series. Oh yeah, also fuck whoever wrote Haiji and thought his character was acceptable. I don't know why he sticks around with you in the game, but I knew character writing was thrown out the window when the first introduction to him was a statement about him being into lolicon. Way too many fanservice jokes in this game too such as Genocide Jack being able to cut your clothes off in a battle against her; I would spoiler this, but it's better if people were saved from the unknown details contained here. The only characters that mattered here were Komaru and Toko if you want to know from my opinion. The only reason why this is not a total 0 star rating is due to the lore expansion and Toko's character who I was happy to go through with. If you want to play this for the lore of the Danganronpa universe god help you then.

the Human After All of video-games; nowhere near as good as the first two releases, gets largely repetitive mid way through and people are trolling if they say it's their best.

In all seriousness though, I appreciate the game at the very least. Deciding that the next place to take your safe but solid 2D specific stylized courtroom investigation game is into a 3D puzzle third person shooter with very little in common with the previous games? A brave and fun move, just a shame that it doesn't really pay off in the end.

'Cus the game starts off pretty strong! You're locked up on this mysterious island, you escape from a bunch of evil Monokumas, you meet the villains and get the low down on what's gonna happen and the first level is genuinely great! You're excited to be playing a different new danganronpa, it throws a bunch of new attatchments for your gun and there's a cool scene with a bridge. After you beat that first boss though, game starts to go downhill.

Second level is all over the place. Immediately you start going in a circle, with your only reward being a monologue from the villain of the cast who REALLY DIDN'T NEED A MONOLOGUE OH MY GOD, and then you're left to wander a straight linear sewer level! Yay! You do eventually get to a camp full of humans and get to interact with some people but, from this point onwards, the game never really gets back to the highs of the intro+first level. It just starts to get real repetitive and runs out of ideas gameplay wise.

Also there's some things story wise that I think kinda blow or were unnecessary: the origin of what Monokuma is, the actual villain's motivations and the minigame with the idol girl. They're all just kinda like...really? Don't think it's a coincidence that around this time I started to care less about the universe that danganronpa was creating and maybe wished it stayed as the more mysterious world from the first game.

Cool idea; bad execution.

if i could rank this game lower i would.

I'm surprised I completed this game
