This game is mean spirited towards you in a way that I think really works. It's very aware of making you feel frustrated by running back and forth through an island with no jump cuts or fast travel methods to make things easier. The puzzles were definitely something I stuck to using a guide for, because my brain hates math.

If you came out of playing The Silver Case wanting even more intentionally complex plots, this is the game for you.

[Would love to see a port of the PS2 version to come around someday just to see the differences in style.]

Well, I'll tell you about punk rock: 'punk rock' is a word used by dilettantes and, uh, and, uh heartless manipulators about music, that takes up the energies and the bodies and the hearts and the souls and the time and the minds of young men who give what they have to it and give everything they have to it. And it's a- it's a term that's based on contempt, it's a term that's based on fashion, style, elitism, satanism, and everything that's rotten about rock'n'roll.

I don't know Johnny Rotten but I'm sure, I'm sure he puts as much blood and sweat into what he does as Sigmund Freud did.

You see, what sounds to you like a big load of trashy old noise is in fact the brilliant music of a genius: myself.

And that music is so powerful that it's quite beyond my control and, uh, when I'm in the grips of it I don't feel pleasure and I don't feel pain, either physically or emotionally.

Do you understand what I'm talking about?

Have you ever felt like that?

When you just, when you just couldn't feel anything and you didn't want to either.

You know? Like that? Do you understand what I'm saying, sir?

This game has the most entertaining KTP writing next to TSA I swear, it is sloppy to play at times and the puzzle design isn't that great but god the writing, fucked up how the DS port DESTROYS the soundtrack

This game made me want to kill myself

Comer cojones y desayunar vello púbico.

EDIT: "Está hecho así a propósito para demostrar el tedio de los videojuegos" ¿y si me cago encima a propósito eso lo puedo justificar?

4.5 stars for the child abuse scene

Gosto bastante dos gráficos e da direção de arte dessa versão do DS pra ser sincero.

Giving this 4.5 instead of 5 just because of this port's state. The localization was good, and I don't really mind the graphics (there's a certain charm to them), but the controls are ATROCIOUS. Not even a 3DS circle pad can fix the dpad controls here. Only the touch controls are good-ish, but far from ideal.

Besides this, this here is one of the greatest experiences in gaming I've had in the past few years. Even with the exhaustive amount of walking. FSR surprised the hell out of me, and hit ALL the right spots.

If you're an adventure game fan, you'll definitely love this. It's a rather linear game, with arguably very simplistic puzzles, but oozes charm and may surprise you with the amount of depth the story presents in the last chapters.

DISCLAIMER: play this AFTER playing The Silver Case. Seriously. This is quite literally a sequel, and the most important parts of the story will only make sense if you're well acquainted with the events of the prior game.

Ah, and don't mind the "Lost and Found" puzzles. At least in your first playthrough. They were not included in the original release, and despite giving you more challenge than the "vanilla" puzzles, they're the very definition of "extra content", and can even harm the flow of the main game.

I'd write some shit like "This game sucks." Then give the game a 5 star but honestly, the walking and other shit doesn't bother me that much. So I'm just going to be genuine. I fucking adore the comedy and general writing in the game. Like Sumio will get kicked in the balls by some snot nosed brat who breaks the 4th wall, and then he proceeds to call the kid fucking demon spawn. It's a game for hardcore fans of Suda, so since I love it I guess that means I'm one? Cool.

Do not try to play it if you hadn't played silver case first. FSR is not TSC's sequel, but TSC is definitely FSR's prequel.

Some reviews downplay the amount of walking you do, that's especially misleading in the DS port (sucks since it's the only port localized in English) due to its bad controls compiled with odd camera positions that'll have you micro-adjusting your walk every few seconds for a 4-minute walk. Instead of pondering about events and characters, I find my downtime full of annoyances.

Some of my issues with TSC were remedied in FSR, like not having a big lore dump in the last chapter, and it's easier to keep up with the events.

Some details still felt unused or needless after finishing the game, and I can't say that this is a game to be replayed, not in a few years at least. That doesn't mean that there isn't some good writing in it, some chapters are fun, some tickle you with intrigue, while some were straight up bad. Some puzzles were fun, some use spitball logic, and some are just there to make your life worse and the game longer.

Saying that this game is intentionally made bad doesn't make it better for all the people hollering this, buuuut this isn't always bad to be quite honest. I understand that the games makes jokes at your expense, but that's no good when you can't understand the punchline.

You should definitely try this if you're interested in game design, because it teases you intentionally in unfamiliar ways.

End note: I cannot endorse the amount of 10/10 reviews around the game, almost all of them talk good points but then proceed to stretch them thinly in a pretentious tangent as if Suda was the only dev that ever tried to explore the idea of what a video game is.

the sun and rain keep flowers alive

Experimental puzzle/adventure game. Technically you're supposed to play it after playing The Silver Case, but I did that and it only added to the experience a liiiitttle bit. I'm a fan of The Silver Case and to a lesser extent, 25th Ward, and I find FSR the weakest. The ways it formally pushes against playability are memorable, hilarious, tedious, but I don't find the subversions to, overall, be that interesting. Making somewhere really far to walk to only works so far until the point where it just literally becomes making somewhere way too far away.

The narrative doesn't really stick for me... I find it to pull in too many directions and feel almost free-associative, although the imagery of the plane constantly exploding, stuff like the squatting salaryman, are all memorable.

That being said, it still has nice vibes.

A very meta and ironic game, you don't play the game, the game plays with you, but is very niche.

Não é lá o jogo mais divertido de jogar e, com TODA certeza, você vai querer se socar por ter que jogar isso. Porém, o jogo é ótimo e os personagens são também e, junto disso, como uma sequência ao Silver Case, acho que se mantém.

first off i will say this game will not be for everyone the gameplay will be a barrier for most people
i dont want to say much about the gameplay because i people will find it more interesting if they see it for themselves and putting it into words can be kind of weird
i feel the story is really neat though and one of sudas more laid back games compared to his others which is an interesting thing to see and the themes it tackles later on i thought were neat especially looking back after i finished it like i said due to the gameplay its not going be for everyone and for understandable reasons i feel im a very patient player though so i went through it and really liked the game
i will say i do wish the ps2 version was translated it plays fine on the ds but feel there wasnt a huge point to putting it on there i guess not mad that it is though keep in nether version looks graphically great but i prefer how the ps2 version looks and i dont see what you get out of playing the ds version that you couldnt get out of the ps2 version outside of a translation and portability

realistically this game is like a 2/10 but it's a 2/10 with a gold star because the writing is so fucking fantastic

Port cutre de un juego asombroso.

Al menos está en español y se puede jugar.

this game was made SOLELY for mathematicians to have their 1 video game

Easily one of the most wild and memorable experiences I've had with playing a game. The way it starts, the way the first couple requests go, I was thinking to myself "Hey this is really great, the setting is super interesting, these characters are fun, and this gameplay isn't nearly as convoluted or tedious as I thought" (ignoring the half an hour I spent trying to solve one of the insane math questions given through the optional lost and found items). But with each request, the game allows you to get a little closer to your goal, and as you get closer, it really starts to mess with you. Several of the chapters in this game felt like cruel jokes on the player, but the writing and execution is so spot on I still found myself laughing with the game, amazed at the audacity of several different moments. FSR definitely is as insane, occasionally bullshit, and patience testing as people say it is, but it never stops being incredibly compelling, quite a feat to pull off. Just when you think you're sick of it, it pulls you back in.

The way this ties into The Silver Case is also really cool, never really making clear what is and isn't related to the events of that game, but playing with the elements and characters of that game in a way that really kept me on my toes (apologies to the probably large percentage of people who played this port with no knowledge of TSC).

Lastly, obviously being able to play the PS2 version of this game would be great, but something about the way this game looks and sounds in order to be on the DS, as well as the fact that it's on the DS at all, it really adds something to it. Something might have been lost, but I feel like something else really good was gained, not smart enough to say what exactly. "That DS feeling", I guess is the only thing to call it. I mean, you should have seen how hard I popped off for the DS rendition of Tokio's theme.

EDIT: Coming in real quick because I forgot an entire paragraph of this review. Anyway, I mentioned earlier the way the game slowly becomes more and more cruel as the story goes on, and I love the way that's reflected in the NPCs. It starts off with everyone taking note of how kind Sumio is and how willing he is to help people out, and eventually everyone is telling him to his face that they're using him because he's a useful idiot, and tell him to fuck off to the other side of the island. Everyone goes "yeah it's hard, but you'll do it because I told you to, you piece of shit". That sudden hostility and anger that came out of characters every now and then in TSC shows up in full force. This coincides with more and more of the island's true nature being revealed, and it's quaint remote feeling being replaced by an unnerving artificiality. Good shit, in summation.

I don't hate this game, but it actively hates me.
Edit: 2.5 years later, hindsight has been very kind to this game. I'm bumping up the rating several stars because it was funny, even if the joke feels like it's at the player's expense. Arguably, that makes it way funnier, and I want more people to play it.

This game is a trip and I love it dearly (except the math test near the end). One of the best atmospheres of any game I've played. Lospass Island serves as the perfect purgatory for Sumio to loaf about not doing his job. My favorite Suda51 game. Switch remaster pls.

Another slam dunk for the "Kill The Past" series. The gameplay was odd, and the walking isn't exactly exhilarating, but everything comes together in this really great package that serves as the sequel to The Silver Case.

I really enjoyed the themes of this game. What is paradise? Is being too kind a bad thing? Why do we procrastinate tasks even when they are so important? Is kindness even real or is it just a way to avoid our own problems?

Sumio Mondo is probably my favorite character in the series thus far. I really enjoyed his character and the changes he goes through. Everyone around him represents how he feels about himself. I love how everyone goes from praising him and revering his kindness, only to admit that they take advantage of him and find his stupid later on.

Sure, the gameplay could've been a bit more fleshed out. But the overall package here is definitely worth a playthrough for Suda fans. Hard to determine which I like more: This, or Silver case. But I do know that I don't regret playing this fantastic entry in the Silver Case trilogy.

So initially I read this as a purely nihilistic screed against caring in general, which sucks, but when I read it instead as a screed against continuity and canon and lore as concepts it's way better. 2.5 until I figure out which fits better

honestly the only thing I didn't like about this game were some of the stupid puzzles and the camera glitching out half of the time, the walking is tolerable

the story is amazing, though the connections between this game and the silver case are loose (but i'd imagine that because this game released before that in the west) the characters and their interactions are funny and charming as all hell, i find the 4th wall breaks funny as well

this version would have been much better if it had the HQ music of the PS2 version, and a camera that didn't glitch out every 2 seconds
but storywise i think this is suda's best work
i cannot recommend this game enough please go play it

Open Catherine, and please tell me what even happened in The Silver Case!?

I want to come to this game again, played too early and was too dark
