I liked the character and world design but that was about it. What was exciting and fresh at the time of release isn't so anymore and all that leaves you with is an abysmal camera with frustrating vehicle (and sometimes in other ways) controls.
Probably the Naughty Dog game that has aged the worst out of the ones I've played.

I never liked this back in the day, and I can't explain why (I was more of a Ratchet and Clank guy), but I pushed through to the end out of curiosity for the sequels - and then I just fell in love with Jak 2 and 3, loving every change made to the world and the style of gameplay.
Revisiting Jak and Daxter in later years, my appreciation has gone way up - it's still my least favourite of the three, but for what it is (an open world platformer), it's highly enjoyable and presents a good challenge. Yes, aspects are dated, but not to a significant point IMO. It's a satisfying play, and the camera issues aren't much different to many other 3D platformers. It's something the genre is notorious for.
Plus, even if you don't LOVE it, playing this for context and then experiencing the transition to the wonderfully dark and challenging Jak 2 is something special.

This is THE childhood game for me. It's got its flaws, but it won't lose any stars for them because nostalgia fuels my love for this game. For those who haven't played it: give it a try. It's a fun 3D platformer/collect-a-thon with a unique yet simple plot to drive the gameplay. The open world design is great for its time. It's a fun time, and if you have 4-5 spare hours you can beat it in one sitting.
Feels like the natural progression for Naughty Dog after the Crash series. I remember playing this for the first time and constantly thinking "this feels like an open world Crash game," and I always feel that way when I play it, which is absolutely a good thing. Possibly hot take but man I miss these old ND platformers and don't care about their new types of games, I want these fun silly games from them again.
Really good 3D platformer that really understands the strengths of the genre and what could be done with it now that it was no longer restrained by the PSX/N64 limitations. Love the seamless transitions between levels, and the way levels are structured that you constantly see something new to do while never feeling lost, even in the biggest levels.
My biggest complaint with this game is that I had a hard time gauging the distance between me and enemies, so when I tried to spin attack at them I very frequently did not do it close enough and ended up getting hit. Health in this game is given out very scarcely, and while death isn't as consequential as games like Mario 64 due to the checkpointing, there were several instances of me respawning farther than I should have from where I died, as sometimes checkpoints didn't work where they should have. Combine this with the problem I had with hitting enemies and I had a lot of pretty frustrating moments. Still, this is definitely one of the best in it's genre, and I'm glad I finally got to play it.
