deserves a 5/5 based on sound design and vibes alone. EVERYTHING about this game is so unapologetically over the top it's unforgettable. when you press start the title screen opens up to a low roar to reveal the main menu. there is dynamic music not only for gameplay but also each layer of the ui. when you jump high enough the music fades out and mock b-movie quotes play. one level is a giant pinball machine, another is a city with snow engulfing its skyscrapers. shortcuts are marked with giant windows that shatter when you cross then and then a divine mix of whatever corny trance song is playing kicks in. the main gameplay hook is literally built around a run dmc sample. just an absolute masterclass in maximalism.
Best snowboarding game ever. awesome tracks, cool and unique characters, some basic but great for its time RPG leveling stuff like how fast the character is, or how well a board will control etc. I always felt like this game should get a remake or a sequel because this game was outstanding for it’s time, and was even more fun if you had friends to play it with.
People love to rave about SSX Tricky. "Oh man it's so good," they say. Well guess what? It's fine. It has some really good tracks, like Tokyo or Hawaii. It has some awful tracks, whose names I've buried in the recesses of my mind. The showoff mode was less interesting to me than something like the Tony Hawk games. Having to unlock tricks through the trickbook didn't interest me in the slightest. Maybe it's because I have the notion that SSX games are racing games, so I naturally looked forward to the races more. The actual racing in Tricky is mediocre. There's no punch like in SSX 3, the only SSX I'd played before this one, and it makes knocking down opponents very odd. It felt like every time I collided with an opposing racer, whether by my fault or theirs, it was a dice roll as to who got knocked down or pushed in what direction. The controls are fine, nothing stand-out in my opinion. Learning the little intricacies of the landscapes and physics was pretty fun. Tricky is an ok game.
