Pretty run of the mill Mario game

Really solid entry. I need to replay it myself to see if I really like it, but I remember having a good time here. Multiplayer is amazing, and the new power ups are great. I'm just not a huge Mario fan.

I played this one many times now and it is one of the best games on the Wii U and one of the best co-op platformer multiplayer games. It is kind of easy most of time, but it know how to get difficult, especially in the later and secret worlds.
I never completed the secret worlds, but I really need to do it soon. But it is always funnier with a friend, and nowadays it is something difficult to gather.

i like this more than odyssey. pure fun.

excited for people begging for this to be on switch to realise how mid this game is when it actually gets ported

The movement is far too restrictive for my liking, the multiplayer feels poorly thought out, and the game can feel extraordinarily bland at times. However, it does have a wealth of content and solid gameplay; just nothing more than what you'd expect of a 3D Mario title.

I've had a complicated history with 3D World, it was the last console 3D Mario I owned, I started it and never 100% beat it in the summer of '19 because I could not get past Champion's Road for the life of me. Come Summer of '20 I sit down and decide I'm gonna grind through it and I beat it, unceremoniously. I think it is important to contextualize what it is that made 3D World not live up to the hype.

Super Mario 3D World follows a similar level design idea to that of Super Mario 3D Land. The game is set in a 3D isometric world that makes it look like a 3D Mario and play like a 2D one. It makes the levels a good baseline for anyone who wants to jump into the series. That being said, World differs from Land by being a bit more open. Each of Land's levels are a bit tighter and Mario has restricted movement to make the levels flow much more naturally. Super Mario 3D World has sporadic level design, with the game often shifting what you are doing constantly. Some of them introduce their levels well. They introduce an idea, expand upon that idea and then challenge a player's understanding of that idea. Levels that come to mind are Double Cherry Pass or Switch Scramble Circus. Then you take a look at levels like Champion's Road which has the player introduced to new elements presented in new ideas constantly. Or if you want to use the excuse that Champion's road is the ultimate Act 3 or a Mario level then consider the Boo houses in the game or the ninja house levels. How many levels in 3D World can you remember that even have that three-act pattern? When people say 3D World has good game design, they are cherry-picking to the extreme.

Although I will admit there was a lot of good in this game. The green stars are very well implemented and as long as I sat back looking for them, I usually found them on my first try. In some instances, they were even placed in really nice spots that make the player feel accomplished for searching around, such as in an invisible maze where there's a glowing spot for the player to ground pound and when they do, a hidden path appears to the star. On that note, completion is a rough thorn on the rose of the 3D World. I love completing 3D Mario's. Seeing that max star count in Super Mario 64 is what I live for. So when I look at 3D World in comparison I groan. Super Mario Odyssey has a lot to do but that whole lot is paced so well, with so many tips as to where you need to go and it all flows into the next so well that I never feel booted from the action. 3D World is very different because of the 2D Mario style. If you miss a green star, you have to go back and play through the whole level to find it. Three hundred and eighty stars, along with a collection of stamps and hitting the top of every flagpole with a character makes this game a pain in the ass to get through. I think this could have easily been toned down without removing the collectibles entirely. Get rid of the stamp houses and the mushroom and flower worlds. Each little thing the game forces me to do for completion makes me feel like the game is padding out its runtime. There is no need for a captain Toad level in every world that acts as a complete pace breaker, even though I do like the Captain Toad levels. There's no need for a stamp house or twenty different secret bosses blocking my path. Half of the stars that you get in 3D World are not even from finding things in levels, most of them are just end-of-level completion which does not give the player any gratification when they complete other levels and get nothing. I like this game, I really do but they need to tone things down with the collectibles

Finally, we come to the minor issues and praises for this game. Firstly, this moveset does nothing for me. The multiple characters really felt like a way to make the movement "interesting" because there are hints where I really like a character but it fades and I always switch back to Luigi because he's objectively the best and even he feels bland at times. The power-ups are what helps in this regard because this is the most power-up heavy Mario game and it works. While the cat bell does take center stage, I found myself often wanting a Tanooki Leaf or a fire flower just because of how well-balanced everything is in terms of enhancing the player's abilities. I do wish they had brought back the pocket system here because I do find myself looking for an item constantly only to realize I have none.

All in all, Super Mario 3D World is an incredible game that feels like a true translation of the 2D Mario formula into a digestible 2.5D format without being entirely uninteresting the way that Super Mario 3D Land was. Although I do just wish that the game wasn't effectively made with 4 casual players in mind because single-player experiences are more my pace.

improving 3D World in two easy step:
-remove every character other then Mario
-give Mario Rosalina's spin jump

even if i replay this and don't like it as much as i used to, those memories i had playing this will never leave me and i think that matters more than anything

Completed front to back with my sibling. Definitely has issues, but definitely fun.

Mario heaven. The stages in this are TONS of fun! The fact they were able to give each level a new gimmick, even up until the end of the game, is incredibly impressive. Multiplayer with up to four people is a blast and the secret world is a great. How can you NOT have fun???

Was not expecting this to be as fun and addicting as it was, especially after SM3DL. Levels were short but sweet, and I enjoyed nearly all of them save for 1 or 2. Movement is somewhat limited compared to prior 3D Mario games, but was smooth nonetheless. The aesthetics were amazing, even playing with just the Gamepad screen. A bit on the easy side, but it ramped up somewhat as it went on and I was genuinely stumped on one Stamp hiding spot. Had a blast from near start to finish; loved it.

This is a really fun game. I personally enjoyed this game more than Odyssey. Multiplayer and more difficult levels makes this game more entertaining.

My favorite Wii U game, and some of the most excitement I've had for a game's release. This game has everything I wanted in it, smooth controls, beautiful graphics, and loads of bonus content, including an extra character and 3 new worlds. One of the best multiplayer experiences I've ever had, me and my friend going for Champion's Road over and over until we finally got it. A personal favorite.

Nintendo has been calling all of these platformers "athletic games" since Donkey Kong, but never does it feel more true than here in 3D World. Terrible name aside, 3D World is about as perfectly realized as its almost-name-twin Mario World, or even SMB3. all of its movement feels incredible. All of its level design is breezy, sticky, slippery fun. While I'm not the hugest fan of compromise between the 2D Marios of yore and the big 3D Marios of 64, 3D World is as perfect a compromise as one can possibly reach.

I played it from start to finish five times in a row.

3d land but worse and with cats

Playing this in coop with my sis was really fucking lit. Probably would've sucked solo though.

MARIO IS A FURRY GRJAOHEGSEHGGJHISRLHGISL

Game 18 of Mario Marathon

I ended my Mario Marathon with a game I had yet to play. I didn't own a Wii U when it was relevant so I just assumed it was Mario 3D Land with a cat suit. Neat, but nothing I felt the need to rush to get. Almost seven years later and I was surprised to find what an absolute joy this was to play.

While it starts of very easy like 3D Land it is just brimming with a ton of more personality. Every stage feels like it's own little world with it's own little ideas. The music is absolutely some of the very best the series has to offer, and the Wii U gamepad doesn't get into the way too much outside of a few "blow on the screen" sections that feel tacked on.

In addition, you get a whole slew of remixed levels when you beat the game that add some challenges to mix that culminate in a final stage that rivals even Grandmaster Galaxy. There is not perfect run though so you can go in with a raccoon tail, but the run that ultimately won on had me losing the tail almost right away.

This game is a real joy and deserves to be remembered as some of the best Mario and best platformers around. Some might fight it's difficulty curve a little slow but I was grinning the whole way through. How this is the one one big Wii U title not ported to the Switch is beyond me. I hope they change that soon.

We finished it in 1 day, but boy, was that a challenge... Had mad fun also!

The only Mario game outside of Party and Kart that I remotely enjoy

this game is so UGLY and boring...... it is so incredibly boring!
