Though I've always loved the art style, as an older gamer I can appreciate the fact that the game is incredibly simple to beat in comparison to modern games and really doesn't offer much in the way of clever enemies, as the same enemies are just reused for each level with a couple of puzzles thrown in to successfully fight the bosses (which are all the same.) A absolute blast back in it's prime and even though it has severely aged it is still fun to play now.

Established the formula for the series and is decent fun but would be vastly improved upon in later entries

It's Mario, fuck you. My first memory is being taught how to play this game, there is literally no meaningful criticism good or bad that can be made at this point in time about friggin' Super Mario Bros.

yeah it's alright but I don't think this series is gonna go anywhere

A 5-star game in 1985, sure. It saved the whole industry! But it's not like I'd really enjoy playing this all that much in 2020.

Universally accessible and satisfying controls, memorable tunes, and a poppy artstyle - SMB is a classic, though it's not timeless. Repetitious level design, visuals, and audio when not using warps can get tedious and cement Super Mario as a definitively dated, but quite fun experience.

For the first in the franchise, its pretty good. However, some repetitive design holds it back from being a really incredible game.

this is so much easier as an adult??? i played this in one sitting in bed while my nesting partner snoozed next to me. i didn't use level warp pipes because i wanted to experience the whole game. i think this is the first time i've actually beaten this??? still very nostalgic, though, as this is the first video game i really remember playing.

The physics for it are still good til these days.

They could only top this with Super Mario Deluxe 2.

The quintessential platformer. It's always a joy to return to.

Respect is due for what this did for the medium but that's about as far as it goes for me. This isn't all that fun to play and there's all of the Mario games that came after this that you can go with instead.

World 3 has great aesthetics at least.

Decided that since it's been a while since I played the original Super Mario Bros., it was worth giving it another go via the Nintendo Switch's NES emulation.

Where I stood on the original Mario platformer back in the day is where I stand now: the game is great, has lots of retro charm to it, yet the advances made in Mario ever since this first entry have rendered this game seemingly obsolete besides revisiting it for nostalgia's sake. The controls are too floaty for my taste, and the level design is a tad bland; not bad, though, by any means.

Playing via the Switch is also not that recommended in my opinion if you're planning on playing with the joycon controllers. The lack of a true D-pad on the Switch makes the game a real hassle when wrestling with the wonky directional buttons. Play this on the OG console, the litany of other ports, other forms of emulation, or if you're going to give this a go on Switch, use a dedicated controller and not the joycons.

There are a few key points in video game history where a game singlehandedly becomes the public's entire concept of what a video game is. Games that not only become so popular in their own right that they become ubiquitously synonymous with the medium itself, but prove to be so inspirational to other developers that they bring about a convergence.

Within a year of Super Mario Bros, every other developer was trying to make a Super Mario Bros. Mario became video games, and through repeated demonstrations of polish and visionaryism, he would remain video games for the next four console generations.

Mario is good.

one of the biggest classics in all of gaming that has aged surprisingly well compared to most NES games (or even n64 games)

I know it's an absolute classic, but playing it in the modern day is just a bit of a struggle. The controls don't feel tight enough for a platformer, and the way that they try to extend gameplay by making you restart games on gameovers in this era feels like too much of a time waster these days (luckily most modern releases of the game does have save states, but you may feel like that's cheating).

There's still some fun to be had here, and the music is always great.

Regardless of my low-ish score, the game is a 10/10 for history purposes.

Lacks some of the precision and expansiveness of later Mario titles, but from a pure platforming perspective, a continually underrated entry in the series.

Best 2D Mario other than SMW. Simple, streamlined Mario without the gimmicks of later installments.

Played this all the time when I was little, but I don't think this aged all that well. This is the first time I've ever completed this game warpless, it was still an enjoyable experience, but it's not as great I remember it.

This game sucks because it didn't learn anything from the 35 years of future video games that wouldn't have been made without it smh Nintendo

Barebones fun. It's never incredible, but when it's good or great, it goes far.

A classic. Hard to go wrong with this one even if it's not the most fun to play compared to other 2D Mario games.
I own this game like six times but have never fully beaten it.

No matter how many times I play this it is always so much fun to go back to. It's one of those games that practically changed the entire medium, and every gamer ever needs to play it.
